So, I've posted a few free verse poems to start--here's something, umm, a little different. Hope it's worth the read.

The Legend of Smiley

Who first raised his finger
and said Dunn Dodd’s name
no living soul recalls,
but that black voice speaks still.
And what fear drove us from the
tavern into the pouring rain
past the gates of Gibbon’s Hall
crying vengeance for its ill.
And what madness was it
that struck our reason blind
and drove us to the docks
among the fishing boats to find
that devil in its flesh who
lingered too long in this town.
What made us think that
we, the black of heart, could
bring him down?

(“ . . . When Smiley comes a-callin’
he will bring his hammer down
on the head of every wretched soul
that haunts this harbor town.
He will lurk among its shadows,
on its streets of cobblestone,
and seek to rend the flesh of those
who wander there alone.
Sagging skin and purple lips;
fishhooks from his fingertips.
Bodies one by one will fall
when Smiley Dodd a-comes to call. . . .”)

Who first struck Dunn Dodd,
and what one of us chose
to bind his hands with fishing line
and drag him from the dock
across the flooded beach
to the Point, where the wrecks rose
from the sand and rising tide
at water’s edge beside Pitching Rock.
And which sick soul was it
that first slipped knife to bone;
that wrapped his legs in anchor chains;
that filled his mouth with stones;
that there on top of Pitching Rock,
with foul and frenzied glee,
threw him down upon the wrecks
into the sounding sea.

(“. . . When Smiley comes a-callin’
from his murky depths forsook,
he will cast aside his anchor chains
and bear his gaffer’s hook.
He will swing it on the beaches;
he will swing it in the Square;
he will swing it through your bloody heart
if he should find you there.
A seaweed smile and—mercy me!
hermit crabs where eyes should be.
A body’s bound by hell to fall
when Smiley Dodd a-comes to call. . .”)

What wicked force burned
beneath Dunn Dodd’s black skin,
through his dark, lifeless eyes,
to make us shrink from his sight.
And how could we not
disdain the devilish grin
his mild countenance belied,
and who could blame us for our fright.
So who would not have thought
that such evil deeds
were in this town wrought
by one from whom such badness bleeds,
And who could fault us few
who sought that summer’s night to drown
that creature which God surely knew
brought murder to this harbor town.

(“. . . Smithers was the first to go,
flayed beside his bungalow;
Lywellen and his headless kin,
found outside the Grey Goose Inn;
Corey hung from Sloop Dee’s mast;
Carter gutted on the grass;
Marcy’s boneless flesh found free
nailed against the Wishing Tree.—
Who comes next no soul can know;
but surely one is next to go.
Bodies young and old will fall
when Smiley Dodd a-comes to call. . .”)

What legends told carry
not but some small truth,
and what dreadful fate stalks
the aged keeper of this tale, I know not.
Time and rumor have erased all proof,
but my ruin will not wait;
fortune will not fail to cast its lot.
We have harbored these illusions,
but no black heart stands
to shake free the clutch
of this shadow’s grim hands.

So on what summer’s eve
will I too feel his certain touch,
and when will my footsteps lead
through these streets of cobblestone,
to the harbor, past the docks,
to the point by Pitching Rock,
by the tide and sounding sea,
where I know Smiley waits for me.

What a super read Dee, I feel so small after reading this piece by you. just can`t imagine no comments on this.
the ending in this almost leaves a fever with the reader, at least it did with me. really like this. its like reading something brought back from the "old coasts of Scotland or Ireland, maybe England. Lane

WoW! Again.
The late John Cash would love it too.

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

Thanks Lane, Douglas, and Vic for the very kind comments. Sorry for the delayed response, but I've been abroad on vacation the last few weeks. Anyway, "Smiley" is among my few favorites of the not so many poems I've written--so I'm glad you all enjoyed it.

Best regards,

Just Plain Quotes
"Our enemies may not be who we think they are. They are not Major Label monopolies. The world will always have 'majors.' They are not big corporations who own everything. The world will always have 'big' ones. Our enemies are not the loud mouthed critics telling us we will fail. The world will always have those too. Our most dangerous enemy is our own quiet acceptance of the fate we perceive these entities have mapped out for us. The only danger is our own complacency, or inactivity, and our willingness to believe so called experts who tell us we 'can't' and that our grim fate is inevitable." -Brian Austin Whitney
