I hear he's in the hospital. Don't know what's wrong, but it sounds serious. My best to Steve. One of the most knowledgeable and musical people on these boards.

A Post from Michael Wilson on Facebook on July 23rd

have an old friend that is in dire straits. Steve Biederman, known affectionately as The Beed, he has been hospitalized for about three weeks now. One day he seems to be doing better and the next day he gives back ground.
I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that on a couple days he has been about an inch away from dying.
But he is tough. In fact, he once won a tough man competition in Western Kentucky. We were roommates at the time and the winning helped catch us up on rent. Anybody who is ever been a little behind on their rent will understand this moment.
But there was a twist to his winning the tough man competition. Apparently, there was also a professional fight associated with the tough man competition. And the winner of the professional fight was named Michael Wilson. So Steve Biederman brought back the newspaper and the way the story read it looked like he and I had gone to Western Kentucky and just cleaned house. We laughed really hard.
Please say a prayer for him.

POST FROM JULY 20th

Last report I received was yesterday. Steve is again making some progress. The team is focused on treating the abscesses on the liver. Steve's blood oxygen level has improved. Yesterday they had to do some maintenance on the ventilator. They have reduced his level of sedation. they have placed him in a bed that shifts him around, to minimize risk of bed sores. No solid prediction on when he will be fully conscious or off the ventilator.

IF Somebody else starts I'll add one as there is Tremendous Power in Songs and Prayer.
I've been near death a few times in the past 4 years from my Cancer but I'm still here and feel good today.

Thanks, Ben:

Nice of you to give us a "heads-up" notice about Steve. My prayers are for his recovery. Is it just my imagination or are our numbers shrinking? I know that many eventually "throw in the towel" and move on to other pursuits... but I also realize we are all "vulnerable" to the final call.

Speaking of prayers, I received an E-mail from a former Navy Crew Member. His wife of many years has Alzheimer's. He is now faced with sending her away for total care. I pray for both of them and for a cure or at least, a preventative set of measures we can incorporate into our lifestyles.

Barry: Roy and Helen Cooper wrote a "story song" about how the song "Amazing Grace" came to be. It represents a form of healing to my way of thinking. Right now, he has a full plate of things on his daily agenda and I doubt if he has time to spare on the boards at JPF. Maybe Brian has a copy of the song from past years.

Regards to everyone, ----Dave

Last I heard he's getting better. Don't know the details, only that he's getting better. Steve is the only person that had ever sent me a birthday wish via PM on Facebook instead of just a post. It happens that we are both the same age just a couple of months apart. Had many private conversations with him. He was planning to vacation here in Ft. Myers last December. He was going to drive an RV down here and stay at the beach so we could meet. He had to cancel. Don't know if it was his medical condition or what.

STEVE UPDATE 7/27/17

This is from a text update I get each morning from Steve's wife Sherri.

Steve update:
Have a lot of things to say "thank u Jesus" for!!!
1. Wbc(White Blood Count) is at 9.5 this is the first below normal for 23 days!!! We know his wbc was 11.4 when he went to the dr on 7/5
2. They have changed the ventilator settings and he is forcing the machine to breathe not the machine forcing him to breathe! His oxygen #'s are looking really good
3. They have turned off the sedation and pain medicines and so far he is tolerating it well - it may take a while for the pain medicine to work out of his system depending on how well the liver is working
We r going to have a good day today!!!

Here is the update text from Mrs. Biederman..

Good Sunday morning! It is a beautiful day outside here!
Steve update:
It is going to be another rest day!
He is resting comfortably and his coughing isn't as bad as last night.
Dr said that we will try doing the breathing thing on his own again tomorrow but for shorter periods of time, and hopefully he can handle it better!
His wbc is 9.1 and his temperature is slightly below normal, Which has meant before he would spike a fever later; but hopefully this time will be different..
He is somewhat more responsive today and he can open his eyes slightly; the sedation is still in his system and is taking a while to work out.
Please keep him in ur prayers! His recovery is going to be a very very slow process.

Thank you for the update Paul. I've had several near death episodes and miraculous escapes, but the scariest was organ problems. It sounds like he is progressing and not regressing and that's the best news of all. Really appreciate the update!!

This is the text from 7/31/17 haven't gotten an update text today

For the first time in 3 weeks Steve with assistance sat on the edge of the bed AND with assistance steve was able to stand!
This is our first steps to start on the road to his recovery!
Physical therapy will be doing this everyday!
He is a little more awake today and he is opening his eyes wider..
A little Concerning: is that his wbc is back up to 12.1
he is getting excess air into his digestive system and his stomach is very tight and he is belching and has excessive gas.
His fever last night went up to over 100.. Please keep him in ur prayers as this is such a roller coaster

Steve update from 8/1/17

Hope u have had a great day today!
Sorry for the late update but was waiting for the results from the ct scan today.
Steve has had a really good day today and he is really alert but tires very easily..
He was on the trach collar today which I can hold my finger over the trach and
he can then talk and in true Steve style what does he asks me after being sedated for 3 weeks????
"Why did the chicken cross the road?" Yes good ole Steve is back 😜😜
We were given generic results about the ct - they said there isn't any changes in the abscesses and they do not know why is abdomen is full of air.. His wbc is 13.1..
He did give me a kiss on the check yesterday which is the first one I had in a month which made me cry 😂
and they had put him in a recliner for 2 hours yesterday! He is definitely getting better please know ur prayers r working!!

Steve update: Steve is now at cmc in Charlotte and they are reviewing his images and records to see the history!
They have already changed around some of his medicines.
He is struggling with the change of scenery but I think it is where he is more awake and is more aware of how serious this is..
U have to remember we didn't find out about the abscesses until he was already ventilated.
We should know more of the action plan tomorrow; so today will be a rest day!
Please keep him in ur prayers!

Steve update: he has been moved to a step down icu - one nurse still has 2 patients.
They r looking at his nutrition and how to reintroduce it without getting the bowel blockage (which came into play on Saturday) flared up or his gi track backed up.
His stomach is still very distended for being off of tube feed & iv fluids for 48 hours.
His lungs are looking better, his wbc is back down to 11.5 - wbc count was 14.5 yesterday..
They r keeping an eye on the pancreas abscess as now they r saying it could be a pseudo cysts from a pancreatitis attack but if it is a pseudo cyst it should be getting smaller and this one has about doubled in size in 3 weeks..
I have asked them when should it start getting smaller OR if it is an abscess how big will they let it get before draining it...
So we r fighting 3 fronts.. Lungs, pancreas & liver and now the intestines.. T
hank u for keeping him in ur prayers!

Happy Tuesday!
Sorry about not sending out an update yesterday - our action day ended up being a bunch of hurry up and wait..
Here's where we r right this moment.
He had his mri last night around 1:30 in the morning and his blockage started acting up at around 3 this morning..
He threw up around 4 which is not good with a trach..
He had a lot of bile juices in his stomach..
They r still evaluating the mri results and comparing them to the first mri from frye..
He has had issues with his breathing this morning and he has spiked a fever over 102..
Good news is that his wbc is back down to 9.4 this morning.
Please keep him in ur prayers and I will send another update once they decide on what they to do.

I've just realized that Stevie lives in the same small town in North Carolina as me. It was the mention of Frye Hospital that tipped me off, although it seems that he is now in Charlotte. He was one of those who was kind enough to welcome me aboard when I joined here a few months ago. Very sad to hear about his travails. If there is any way that my being so close can be of help, please let me know.

I haven't looked at the general message board in a few weeks, and didn't know about Steve's condition. Steve, I'm praying for your full recovery and looking forward to you beating this. I had a friend go through a similar situation a couple years back and he's fine now--so will you be!

Thinking of you,

Ed.

Latest Stevie update posted on Facebook on August 12th: GOOD NEWS!

Saturday Steve Biederman update. It's a good one!!!!
Good morning, happy Saturday! We have a lot of things to be thankful and give praises for this morning! We r thankful we have such great friends and family who have been so very supportive during this time. Ur outpouring of love has been incredible .. Thank u to the special person/people who called the Hospitality House, ur generosity is overwhelming and I want to say "thank u"!! Thank u to everyone who has helped with our fur babies! Steve and I were talking last night how much we had to be grateful for, he can move his arms, fingers, legs and toes.. Believe it or not this could have a lot worse. He has had physical therapy this morning and he stood for 5 seconds. We did find out yesterday evening that he does have a bowel obstruction and his intestines had stopped working.. This morning the intestines r making noises, so we r hopeful that they r on the move once again.. Thank u for all of ur prayers! I know they r making a difference!

Michael,

Please tell Steve that I've been thinking and praying for him for full recovery. I travel a great deal with my work and have a lot of time in the car for thinking and enjoying the countryside and think much about my friends, past friends, and acquaintances throughout my life. It's really pretty cool how you really feel real "friendships" through social networks of folks you've never met, Steve being one for me!

Getting better. Looks like he's talking to people on the phone now. Maybe someone can copy and paste the latest update from Facebook. He's been in the hospital over a month now. That must suck. Good news.

The last news we had was positive. I'm continuing to hope for the best for Stevie. It sounds like the road to recovery is going to take some time.

All my best, ----Dave

A POST FROM MICHAEL WILSON ON FACEBOOK, August 26, 2017

Steve Biederman is out of the hospital!!!
I believe the support through prayers and posts have had a positive impact on what was often a dire situation. I know Steve and his family believe that too. Thanks everybody.
Here's the latest update from Steve's wife as of Saturday, August 26th, 2017.
Happy Saturday! There's has been a slight change of plans.. Dr's reviewed Steve's condition and rehab notes and have decided that it was best for him to go to kings mtn after all.. He was transferred late last night and we were finally able to get some sleep at 2 this morning.. He is doing good and resting comfortably.. We will be here for about 3 weeks or so and then should be able to transfer to frye for rehab..
