Newest tune. Probably more country than folk.

https://soundcloud.com/robertscottmarshall/this-ol-tree

THIS OL` TREE

THEY SAY SHE TOOK SOME MUSKET BALLS IN 1864
PROVIDING COVER FOR YANKEE TROOPS ..IN THAT NOT SO CIVIL WAR
BUT TIME RUNS OUT FOR EVERYONE… AND ALL THOSE BOYS ARE GONE
BUT THIS OL` TREE….IS STILL GOIN` STRONG

THIS OL` TREE …BEEN STANDIN` NEAR TWO CENTURIES
I WONDER DOES IT HAVE A MEMORY
IT SAW JOHNNY MARCHIN` HOME AGAIN..AND WATCHED ME SKIN MY KNEE
….THIS OL` TREE

A YELLOW RIBBON WRAPPED HER TRUNK IN 1965
BUT MY UNCLE NEVER MADE IT BACK FROM VIET NAM ALIVE
STILL LIFE GOES ON AND CYCLES WITH EACH TURNIN` OF THIS WORLD
AND THIS OL` TREE PROVIDED SHADE WHEN I KISSED MY FIRST GIRL
CHORUS REPEAT

AND WHEN I DIE..I`LL HAVE THEM SPREAD MY ASHES ON THE GROUND
SO MY REMAINS CAN FEED HER ROOTS ..AND FOREVER BE EARTHBOUND
THEN EVEN THOUGH I`LL BE IN HEAVEN WITH MY SPIRIT FREE
A SMALL PART OF MY SOUL WILL LIVE INSIDE OF THIS OL` TREE
CHORUS REPEAT

Very cool, Scott. It makes you try and imagine what the world looked like when that tree first poked it's way out of the earth.

If possible, could you include the lyrics? I'm sure I missed a thing or three. smile

And welcome to JPF.

Ricki

Thanks Neil. Didn`t you used to be on another songwriting web site? songwriter maybe? Your name seems to ring a bell with me.

Inviting tune with some tight lyrics. Nicely produced. A great listen—thanks for sharing.

Scott,

I loved this! Well done, well written. Great melody lead vox and harmonies were superb. I would be curious to here the full left rhythm guitar panned 75% left instead of full left. I like the accent guitar far right as contrasting, but just think with the main guitar rhythm element panning between 70-80 % left might give the song a good balance & overall feel & keeping plenty of room for your lead vox center. I'm not sure, so experiment, but regardless that is just a sug, not a nit.

Enjoyed this'n!

Hi Scott,

Love everything about this, from the detailed lyric to the really old timey country harmonies..

Great. Love this style of lyric.

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.
