Before The Boy Bands (Neil Cotton)

Before the boy bands had begun their lives
Some old trail busters had charmed our minds
Started dirt-poor scratchin’ life on a farm
Left for good totting grandpa’s guitar
Sang anywhere for anything free
Perseverance help them succeed

Before the boy bands before pop had arrived
The Highwaymen defined countrified
They sang of ramblin’ and love gone wrong
They really lived most lines in their songs
In Blue Birds buses with blackened windows
Drink and smoke eased the grind of the road

Johnny, Willie, Waylon, and Kris
First names work when you’re this famous
These legends lived how we could not
Inventing rebellion country-rock
Before The Boy Bands changed all that!!!

Before the boy bands had picked their names
The outlaws were in country’s Hall Of Fame
They performed their own and other hits
Concert crowds sang all their lyrics
Desperados Waiting For A Train
Ev’rybody Gets Crazy Ev’ry Now and Then

Johnny, Willie, Waylon, and Kris
First names work when you’re this famous
These legends lived how we could not
Inventing rebellion country-rock
Before The Boy Bands changed all that!!!

Before The Boy Bands (Neil Cotton)

Before the boy bands had their way paved
The outlaws shuffled down country lanes
Dirt-poor kids scratchin’ life on the farm
Left for good totting bed-roll and guitar
Sang in Honky-Tonks for left-overs and beer
Success followed cause they persevered

Before the boy bands before pop arrived
The Highwaymen defined countrified
They sang of ramblin’ and love that went wrong
Actually lived most plots in their songs
In Blue Birds buses with blackened windows
Booze and drugs eased the grind of the road

Johnny, Willie, Waylon, and Kris
First names work when you’re this famous
These legends lived how we dared not
Inventing rebellion country-rock
Before Boy Bands changed that!!!

Before the boy bands had started their climb
These trail dust outlaws had captured our minds
They performed both great old and new hits
Audiences sang most all their lyrics
Desperados Waiting For A Train
Ev’ryone Gets Crazy Ev’ry Now and Then

Johnny, Willie, Waylon, and Kris
First names work when you’re this famous
These legends lived how we dared not
Inventing rebellion country-rock
Before Boy Bands changed that!!!

Before The Boy Bands (Neil Cotton)

Before the boy bands dollars in their minds
A bunch of outlaws stormed into our lives
Rode Blue Birds with blacked out windows
Doing drugs blurred their years on the road
They sang a bit shady ‘bout right and wrong
Actually lived most stories in their songs

Before the boy bands money at their back
The outlaws struggled no arguing that
Being dirt-poor kids getting by on the farm
Some left for good with back-pack and guitar
Sang in Honky-Tonks for hamburgs and beer
The best were spurred on by ladies’ cheers

~B
First names work when you're famous
Willie, Waylon, Johnny and Kris
Their rawness and rebellion excited us
These outlaws made the music we love

Before the boy bands 20 years back
I think the Highwaymen were the best act.
They brought together their all time hits
Their fans knew and sang ev’ry lyric
Everyone Gets Crazy Now and Then
Desperadoes Waiting For A Train

First names work when you're famous
Willie, Waylon, Johnny and Kris
Their rawness and rebellion excited us
These outlaws made the music we love

Before The Boy Bands changed things up.

Neil:

I don't spend much time on the lyric threads but your title caught my eye on the "What's Going On" Column on the left side of my laptop screen. Naturally, curious soul that I am, I had to investigate. I think you are heading in the right direction with this "song-theme" and lyric. It tells an important story about "the biz" during my teenage era and I hope you can churn away at this thing until it is perfect.

I took the time to print your lyric because I am impressed with the idea behind it. No promises, my friend... I have so much going on in my waning years... but with your permission, I'll do my best to take a crack at the lyric and run my ideas by you (in private) as I make progress. Do not hesitate to tell me to "go fly a kite" and keep my grubby grips off of your words... LOL!

If you get better offers... I will not be offended. It has the "bones" of becoming a great song.

All my best,

----Dave

Hi Neil:

Expect an E-mail from AOL soon. I'll mention my name in the "Header" so you will know it isn't spam. I'm trying to finish up a new song right now (recording phase) and it is eating my lunch! Thanks for being such a good sport... and always remember, this is your song, I'm just along for the ride unless you want to make it a co-write. (I'm with ASCAP)

Regards,

----Dave

A co-write soon as the first chord is struck on your version.

Hi Neil:

I sent you an E-mail late yesterday with an attachment in JPEG format 'cause I didn't know which word processor you use. Remember, my writing style and ideas are only for you to use as you see fit... or not. Let me know if you have problems with the JPEG file and I'll hand type the suggested lyric in another E-mail. (I don't use Microsoft Word.)

Regards,

----Dave
