Oh my God!!! I'm turning into JIMMY WEBB!!! All the things he is talking about the current state of music is what all of us have been saying for a long time. Best of times, worst of times. I think we had the same fathers. LOL!

"All I wanted was to make enough money to record another album." - What a telling quote. Bet his perspective has changed now.

"Stopped me cold." - Talking about modern recording technology. Definitely a changing of the guard right there.

I think its still the same in that people sill emulate the greats, and there will always be new great people that push things even further.

Barry,

After the five last week, no I have not written anything today. Although am in the middle of one that is taking me a while to write. I am dealing with the impending deaths of my Mother and one of my best friends from Cancer. So I am frankly writing something for both of their funerals. I don't write songs that are sad, so it takes a while to find the right perspective.

I did get an artist to cut six of my songs today, and as usual, get people who send me links to songs that have been recorded, videos being done, even songs in other languages. I have an odd but pretty fulfilling life.

Jody, you are correct, (good to see you by the way) that there are always going to be new writers, new songs, new trends, new things, and even those of us who have been around will probably recycle OLDER stuff that finds new life. Just all part of doing this. But the point is that YOU HAVE TO DO IT.

You can't get consumed by what is on the charts. You can't get overwhelmed by what you CAN'T FIX. You can only do things that YOU CAN DO. And that is going to be the way music always has been and always will be. Find your passions, impliment them by always being on top of your game. Let the chips fall where they may.

Since it is a "MAB sharing information" day, here is another little gem by my buddy Jason Blume. I really like this guy and although he often beats me to the punch (although I beat HIM to the punch from time to time) we are both pretty much on the same page. The truth is the truth. Here is his latest that sort of dovetails with this discussion:

Two Jimmy Webb links from "A Tramp Shining"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYvWRhH0rsM

And MacArthur's Park from the same album

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRwYQgk05DY

The result of two incredibly talented drunks on a month's bender....

And yeah, sure, the songs he wrote that Glenn Campbell recorded were awesome!

But "A Tramp Shining"????

One songwriter. One actor who could usually stay on key when he wasn't trying to hard to be Richard Harris....

There is something to be said for writing without a committee...And I say that with no criticism involved!!!

I'm just sayin'....

Jim Webb was and is one hella-writer.....

Marc,

So sorry about your mom and friend. My prayers are with you.

******************************************************************************

Here's a audio link to the interview MAB posted:

https://soundcloud.com/pattmorrisonasks/jimmy-webb

Great stuff, btw..

**************************************************************************

Always been a big Jimmy Webb fan--the very first albums I bought--at Wallach's music city in Los Angeles in '69 on so--were those great early Glen Campbell albums on Capitol with those awful (in hindsight) MOR strings, but what amazing songs!

*************************************************************************

Midnite:

A Tramp Shining is great, as is "The Yard Went On Forever" --and I also love The Fifth Dimension's album "The Magic Garden" with mostly Webb tunes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zlychznz_6k&list=PLNHo79SpNe29IusRM0HuVmqA98fVBL_XA

I'd love to see a biopic on Webb. He was just a kid when he started rollin'..

*****************************************************************************

Mike

Just Plain Quotes
"A lot of people will tell you that preparation is what will make you successful. But I think that people misunderstand exactly what that means sometimes. The type of preparation you need most is the kind that allows you to instantly seize an opportunity, change your course based on a momentary circumstance, and grab hold of the totally unexpected when it happens, and allow it to take you for the ride of your life! That is the kind of preparation that can lead to the most enjoyable type of success." -Brian Austin Whitney
