CD Baby down sizing storage again. I have four different recordings stored there that has two (2) copied in storage, they want to have only one of each, so I can pay the cost of getting the extra shipped back to me or have them destroyed. They now only want one CD mailed to them at a time. The economics is not there. To mail one CD from Canada cost four to five dollars, they take $4.00 for selling it, $2.00 to make it, to sell for $9.99. Great way to make money. I gave up sending any, not worth it

Don't they have a streaming & download option Everett? Very few customers want hard copies these days.

Best, John smile

Everett,

What they are telling you without telling you is that they are no longer interested in being in the CD business unless you are moving mass numbers of units. The economics simply do not work storing CD's that do not turn over regularly (usually anything under 10 times per unit per unit per month year is complete loser in shelf space in some retail spaces). I can't imaging if you aren't selling at least 50-100CD's a year they would want to store more than 1 or 2. If you sell more than that, then it leads me to think they are literally done being CD's Baby and should instead be called "Digital File Baby" I WOULD, however, make them send your inventory back. The old CD Baby played fast and lose with accounting/inventory for many years, I bet many titles are multiple copies short. This process allows them to avoid losses due to selling stuff without paying for it. I can't speak to the efficiency of the current owner, but what they bought was pretty lose with keeping track of stuff from all accounts. There would have been a reckoning at some point for the missing CD's, but this way they can make it cost ineffective for most to have their stuff returned and get most people to abandon their inventory or just let it go none the wiser. I am not saying the current owners have done anything wrong (or even that the previous owner meant to do anything wrong) but those numbers were never going to match up if all the CD's had to be accounted for. Fortunately for them, between people abandoning their accounts and now this new practice, they mostly erased the sins of the past. Just a sad symptom of a dying format.

Still they keep asking for one to be sent for each one they sell, regardless of the economics of it for the artist. I just gave up sending. It could be like you said, covering up their short fall in inventory. The economics of having them returned is not really there either, like throwing good money after bad. Lesson learned.

Sounds Crazy to ME..
They are yesterday's news.
I don't believe any of the sites our there have our interests at heart.
Unless you know SOMEBODY BIG who knows up and comers and the stars it's a waste of time to send songs anywhere....just my opinion.

Having physical product with music on it is a loser unless you are gigging constantly and watching sales so you stay barely ahead or slightly behind demand so you don't get stuck with product with no value. CD on Demand options are not as cost effective, but make more sense as a tech dies. Some services allow you to offer such a thing, or you could literally sell them yourself by making the CD as needed at home and mailing it out at the lowest possibly postage rate and passing that cost to the consumer. Meanwhile, pick a single digital source to sell your music and register it with all the subscription services who might play it or have it available for your fans in the format they prefer. That is about all you can do at this time. Meanwhile, STOP ever pursuing a record deal, and instead, pursue real live FANS of your music who you can directly nurture and interact with. Gather enough of them, and that is your career. Don't think in terms of radio play or record deals, think, YOUR fans supporting YOU directly, with no middle man. Gather 1000, make a working living (i.e. enough to pay the cost of recording music). Gather 5000, make enough to live. Gather 50K or more, and have a business around you as the centerpiece offering up all sorts of content and amusing entertainment, preferably daily with blogs, podcasts, Youtube channels, etc. It is really that simple. You do no need managers or lawyers or any of that crap unless you are making so much money that by not hiring those people you will lose money.

It isn't that hard. If you really have talent.
