Here’s something for country fans. A few days ago Mike Blottenberger sent me one of his song lyrics that he wanted to enter in the Pennsylvania Heritage Songwriting Contest and he asked me for the music to go with his lyric.

The contest requirements:
- the song has to be about Pennsylvania
- the genre must be Bluegrass

Bluegrass??? Not really my cup of tea (I never composed or recorded Bluegrass before) but for me this was a huge challenge and ... well ... I gave it a try. Here’s „Kissing Bridges“. Lyrics by Mike Blottenberger and music and instruments (4 acoustic guitars, 2 electric guitars, bass, drums, cymbals, handclaps, keyboards, banjo, slide guitar and ... I forgot the rest) by me. I couldn’t find someone to sing this one for me so I had to do that myself too. I hope you enjoy it anyway.
Oh yeah, feedback is always appreciated.

I love the covered bridges
Here in Lancaster County
And the thumping sound the wood makes
From the cars and time’s bounty

Most of them are painted red
But a few are white-stained too
And folks say it's good luck
To honk as you drive-thru

Momma called them “Kissing Bridges”
Back when I was young
For many couples strolled across them
And would try to sneak in one
No matter if it’s raining
Or the day is blessed with sun
Kissing bridges in Pennsylvania
I’m sure you’ll find one

Some of the covered bridges
Span over a quiet creek
And some the Conestoga
Yet they all are so unique

Long ago there were near a thousand
Built and used in this state
But time has not been very kind
And I worry about their fate

Hi Rob:

I listened and enjoyed your first "Bluegrass" number. Mike did a great job on the lyrics and you took care of the rest quite well. Bluegrass as a genre has "morphed" a bit in recent years and has become a little more sophisticated in some circles. I give it credit for being one of the "birth parents" of what is today called, "Country" music. If you two decide to take this song further "up the music trail"... I would suggest finding even more "Bluegrass sounding instruments" including a flat-top Resonator and a well-played fiddle.

As always, best of luck to you... and thanks for sharing. Nice work. ----Dave

Hi Dave,
I'm glad you liked my first Bluegrass track. You know, living in Germany now for over 40 years I didn't have much exposure to Bluegrass or Country music so far in my life. The very first draft version sounded very much like country but as I added more instruments and vocal layers it kind of got a little more pop-like. So I guess we ended up with some kind of country pop crossover. By June we will know how things went in the contest.

Thanks for your advice and I'll use a fiddle on my next Bluegrass song smile.

All the best

You did an excellent job on the instrumentation and vocals for this track.

It strikes me more as traditional country than bluegrass but that doesn't detract at all from the great job you did.

Solid production, too.

I enjoyed the listen.

If it has strings I will find a way to play it!

I guess kissing bridges is Pennsylvania's version of the covered Bridges of Madison County, IA! smile Nicely done demo and best of luck with it, Rob and Mike.

I'm not that well versed in country or bluegrass but have come to learn that, generally speaking, banjo, acoustic guitar, fiddle, mandolin, and upright bass make up a bluegrass band. Some have other things added but this would be the typical line up, for what it's worth.

Hi Ricki,
thanks for the good luck wishes!

I just looked up “Bluegrass” over at Wikipedia. OMG, there are so many subgenres: traditional, progressive, gospel, neo-traditional. The instruments you listed are the ones mainly used. It looks like I got pretty close. I have to admit that I played all of my instruments on a keyboard. Real instruments would have sounded much better. Like I wrote, bluegrass and country are definitely not my cup of tea.

Thanks for taking the time to listen and for your feedback.

Take care
