Hey All,

I was on fiverr.com this evening, putting in an order for 3d modelling, and was having a browse through the session muso's available....

https://www.fiverr.com/categories/music-audio/session-musicians

Holy Crap Batman ! There's some great players there. I especially like the dude who is 2 lines down, 3 from the left. "I will record epic guitar solo for your song"

Sure, there is also the not so good, but you can certainly put together a symphony orchestra if you wish..... with epic guitar solos.... and rap....and brass ....and the list goes on.

Is it exploitation or simply free enterprise ? I wonder if they make any money ?

Thoughts ?

cheers, niteshift

PS - at those prices, there is now no excuse for a crappy sounding demo

We used to do stuff with SessionMusicians a website that let you hire A list players for any project. Some of my all time studio player heroes were there. It was a great idea and effort that was simply a few years ahead of its time. I bet if it could have made it until now, it would be thriving. A lot of stuff has come and gone. Dozens of organizations and sites are sorely needed today with the passionate people behind it still running it, but these massive corporate all powerful social media sites crushed them out like bugs and sucked all the oxygen out of the room so they couldn't survive. We only exist out of my personal stubbornness, but it's getting nearly impossible to do at this point. We're remnants of a fun and creative cycle of new technology meets people with a passion to do something good having the stage to themselves for a brief moment before the money moved in and killed us off one at a time. It's sort of like in nearly every city where the worst neighborhood gets so lowered in value/potential that rents and costs go down to nothing and so artists and creative people move in, cause a thriving scene, then people with money and power desire that scene so much, they move in, raise the costs of everything so much that those same artists and creative types can no longer afford it and have to leave and almost overnight the "cool" place in town becomes a gentrified wasteland with no soul, heart or imagination and worst of all, zero PASSION for what used to happen there. So the artists scatter, a new generation of similar like minded folks find another part of town which is run down and abandoned and the process starts over. Unfortunately in this case, the Internet is now controlled by such massive corporate interests and politicized so completely as a weapon of propaganda and hyper commercial interest that there is no "neighborhood" to move to. There are no longer sponsors left to support sites because all the small to medium companies are gone in our segment (and others) and so we have no one to do business with on a human scale to make it affordable. And companies like Google set such limited standards for what your website can look like or include or you're black balled (trust me, this is a vicious, oppressive and overwhelming problem for the little guys)

Ah well, sorry to hijack your post.. it hit a nerve I guess... I will repost this separately.

Brian

Yes, I used a violinist for a couple of tracks and a backing vocalist or two. It is excellent work. Most of the gigs have gone up from $5 these days, but many of the providers are from countries where $5 translates into a lot of money. And of course, many of them do it because they enjoy playing. My experience with Fiverr.com overall is that it takes two or three attempts to find someone who gives you what you are looking for - music or otherwise. But at $5, it is usually still a good deal. I have had logos designed, lyric videos made, tracks recorded and mastered, and overall, my experience has been good. I also tried having some promotion done but none of it seemed to have any effect (you can't polish a turd, I guess). Rarely did someone fail to deliver what was promised and if they didn't respond, my money was refunded.

I try to critique as if you mean business.....

Hey Brian,

Hehehehe..... yes, that's a whole other discussion... I'll look for the thread.

Hey Colin, yes like anyone you hire, there will be good and bad. There are certainly talented folks out there, you just have to find them. I'll report my findings on the photo or video forum and folks can judge for themselves.

cheers, niteshift

I've used fiverr twice: once for a narrator (speaking with a British accent) and once for a small translation from Arabic to English. Was wholly satisfied both times. The narrator even did a second take gratis to make a minor adjustment to the track.

It's a good site. Just need to take time to choose carefully.
