Raleigh, ya'll
He had his faults, but this ain't the place to discuss 'em!!!!

I think the best "twist" at the end of any song was his last next to last line of "Memphis Tennessee" when you found out that "Marie" was his daughter:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrbPlr4Wskc

But there was a time for several decades when his best known song was "My Ding-A-Ling" and the heavens wept....

Godspeed...

Satchel was right. Something is gaining on me.

An innovator who influenced rock music like few others have done. He had some awesome stage moves as well, always fun to watch.

I would imagine nearly everyone who has ever learned anything on an electric guitar, at some point learned the Chuck Berry rhythm.

You have to wonder what direction rock might have headed without Chuck. The Beatles might have gone even more pop, the stones might have stayed a blues bar band. Even the bands of today, who don't even know chucks music are influenced by him, because it's the blue print.

Where do we get the pentatonic scale from In rock music without Chuck showing us how? What would rock guitar sound like? Chuck was also a great lyricist, he told great stories in short frames.

love this video where he schools Keith. He was known to be a real ball buster https://vimeo.com/18623223

Chuck schoolin' Keith, awesome!

They did a gig, maybe that video is the rehearsal, back in the eighties. During the actual performance of a song, Chuck told Keith he wanted to up and change keys right in the middle of the song (which Chuck was known to do) and Keith shook his head and said no!

Chuck got a huge laugh out of it. Not too many people said no to Chuck!

That clip was from HAIL HAIL ROCK AND ROLL, from 1987. Keith put together an All Star band to do a big tribute show to Chuck. Chuck kind of argued all the way through the movie. Chuck was a bit of a handful later in life, but was an amazing icon. Those kind of people can get away with it.

I have loads of Stones and Keith documentaries so I remembered that story from one of them. I don't have Hail Hail though. Yeah Chuck has a way of cracking me up!

Funny I learned from that documentary that he didn't have a band. He just showed up with his guitar and the venue had to provide the band and equipment for him. They had to already know his set list, keys, etc. and be ready to play.

I had three friends of mine from different sections of the country, that played shows in his "bands." They all had the same story that I always found interesting. First of all, he didn't take a band, the promoter had to put one together, usually from the best musicians in the area. They would never see Chuck till he got on the stage. No conversation, pictures or anything. He had no set list and the leader would have to say "watch his foot." Then he would kick off the song and the band was expected to follow along. Even doing things in different keys, and if they missed, he would give them dirty looks (and probably fine them) for missing points.

The shows he was playing about the last 20 years were big outdoor festivals with huge crowds. He would always show up late (while the crowd was going crazy), count the money FIRST, and make sure it was all there. Easily understandable with his history of being ripped off, ( a tightwad, as Keith says here. Didn't want to pay for ANYTHING.) Then he had one more "trick" he would use. In his contract rider, he had a stipulation that there was a certain amplifier he was to be provided by the promoter. The promoters would call all over and never could find this specific amp. So they would provide four or five really great amps for him. He would see those and refuse to go on without HIS amp. (While the crowd, already going crazy, would be chanting his name.)

After a few minutes of this, standing near going on, and arguing with the promoter, stage manager, etc. He would say that he "just happened to have one of those amps in the trunk of his car and would RENT it to the promoter for an extra $5000." They had no choice but to go along. Tuns out there were only TWO of them, specially built for Chuck and he owned BOTH OF THEM!
Gotta admire the man's sand. LOL!

As much as he went through in his life, songs being ripped off, not getting credit where credit was due, white artists succeeding where black one's didn't, you have to give him a little leeway. Icons just get more lattitude. And Lord have mercy, did he DESERVE anything he got.
Hail, Hail Chuck Berry. Glad you were here, Sire. Thank you for everything you did, and rest in peace.

Well,
I didn't know or see a lot of Chuck Berry but I believe his life would be a good subject for a Movie, if there isn't one already.
Last Oscar's certain people were griping there were not enough blacks getting Oscars. So hello Hollywood!

I can relate to Chuck's life in that the school of hard knocks can provide a great education.

Trentb, that is almost EXACTLY the same story that these different guys I have known have said. Chuck was CHUCK and he just did what he wanted, when he wanted and how he wanted. I guess when you are a legend, membership has it's priviliges.

Yeah Ray, would make a great movie. He has been portrayed a few times on film, most notably in CADDILAC RECORDS and i GREAT BALLS OF FIRE, where Jerry Lee Lewis set a piano on fire for Chuck to have to follow. Was quite a character. Would make for a great movie. Wonder if Bruno Mars is doing anything.
