This post is regarding: godiyrecords.com

Hello Music Friends,
I am a music manager, producer, and work with various publishing houses and libraries. Today, I spoke with Go DIY Records and here are the facts that were told to me…

They contacted me after finding my artist on Reverbnation and said they were interested in using some of my artists' songs for some of their "Clients." In order to do this, my artist would need to pay an initial "set up fee" of $100, and then a monthly charge of $8 to keep my artists' songs in their library. The publishing houses we have worked with charge nothing and offer the opportunity to artists to present their songs in catalogs to Music Supervisors, ad agencies, and other clients that in turn, make it a lucrative exchange for all parties involved.

You wouldn't pay an agent to send you out to an audition, same way you shouldn't and wouldn't pay a "publisher" or music library, or "sync agency" to push your music. They make their share when your song gets used. Period

Hi Reason! That's a very reasonable statement. There's a million and one ways to rip a songwriter off. Approach every opportunity with suspicion.

How does TAXI fit into this equation? They charge a fee and I was under the impression they are considered legit.

Humm,
I think it is illegal for a Publisher to charge a songwriter to sign his songs. If you suscribe to a Tip Sheet they charge a fee for the service. Taxi is also a service. They take nothing if a song is placed. They do charge for their service.

Hello reason2day,
Welcome aboard. You can listen to some of my songs and my Publisher's songs at
http://www.geocities.ws/fiverosesmusicgroup/ under Ray's Music.
Other's also have links to their music on their posts.

It sounds like DIY is going to people who have songs on-line and telling them how great their stuff is in order to get them to sign on and pay a $100 fee plus a maintenance fee. I would bet that they do that even if the songs don't have a snowball's chance in hell of being used.

Taxi does not do that AFAIK and if your song is no good, they tell you honestly.

I thought they were legit and signed on when they waved the fee for me. I'd checked out the site and they had legitimate music and high-profile clients. I got a lot of emails from them at first, about licensing gigs but the volume has slowed to a near stop. I cancelled my payment and I'm just waiting for them to notice. In the meantime, I joined Taxi through a mail offer.

To clarify, they waved the upfront fee, I was still paying the eight dollars a month.

Hey guys this is Eric, the cofounder of GODIY, and I'd love to formally respond to this discussion. We started this company with the distinct intention of providing opportunity in synch licensing to independent artists w/ great music. Synch is not easy, and the deals available don't always make sense to an indie artist hoping to maintain ownership of their songs. We've spent many years cultivating relationships with ad agencies and production companies and we do our best to adequately represent the artists in our catalog. We have cultivated a culture and model that is proven to work well for the artists we represent - feel free to check out our work for yourself here: https://www.spam.com/see-our-work/ I'm always more then happy to directly answer any questions regarding our agreements. If you are an artist considering our agency, you are welcome to email me directly at SPAM.

Eric,

I've been doing this for 31 years. In my following opinion, what you are asking in terms of a "set up fee" is 100% a rip off. Furthermore, you violated our site rules by spamming us without permission. (Please go back and read them).

If your cultivated culture is so proven, there would be ZERO need to charge the OUTRAGEOUS $100 dollar sign up fee. Please folks, DO NOT fall for this crap. Only desperate people who think they can buy success would EVER waste their money on this. I don't care if they roll out straw man examples of people they have found placements for etc.. Insiders are always happy to support their buds in new ventures to help promote them. And it would frankly be impossible to do proper due diligence on anyone they claimed were success stories no matter what they claimed. Just do yourself a favor, find a legit library who is interested in your stuff and will take their % of actual placements which means they are paying you, not the other way around.

Just say NO!

Brian
