So . . . I think I've figured out how to lay down separate vocal and guitar tracks that might help me pull some more respectable MP3s together. Been playing with the lyrics on this one and they somewhat came together the last day or two. So, before I start spending mindless hours trying to record, thought I'd float it out for suggestions. Just a song about staying humble; think of a kind of bluesy E, A, B7 chord progression as you read. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Long and Hard Way to Fall

(V) Youíve got your diamond rings,
your mansions and your fame.
Youíve nailed your trophies to the wall.
But get too caught up in your success
your gonna wake one day with nothing left
and thatís a long and a hard way to fall.

(V) You like the party life,
the late nights on the stripó
wild sex and drugs and alcohol.
But if youíre gonna speed through life that high,
you better grow some wings and learn to fly
because thatís a long and a hard way to fall.

(C) You want your satisfaction,
swear that youíll never stop.
You think your money grows on trees.
You may have quite the view now
high from your mountaintop.
But when the bottom drops
youíll see it from your knees.

(V) Well the ladies they all love your style,
the crazy things you do,
but you think theyíre at your beck and call.
Keep treating them like you go and do,
theyíre gonna knock you down a peg or two,
and thatís a long and a hard way to fall.

(C) You want your satisfaction,
swear that youíll never stop.
You think your money grows on trees.
You may have quite the view now
high from your mountaintop.
But when the bottom drops
youíll see it from your knees.

(V) Well, the Devil has you in his grasp,
and he knows a thing or two
about making the proudest of us crawl.
So you better give the Lord his due
or heíll kick you out of heaven too,
and thatís a long and a hard way to fall.

Yeah, thatís a long and a hard way to fall.
Yeah, thatís a long and a hard way to fall.

I like the imagery here, and I love how this is clearly coming from specific place. You say it's "just a song about staying humble," but I don't believe there's not a good story here, if you'd care to share it. wink

Personally, if it's a song I'm singing along to in the car, I could do without the "give the Lord his due" bit. It feels sanctimonious, but that's just my personal taste, not a reflection on the lyric itself. The good/evil heaven/hell dichotomy is tried and true for Blues, so it definitely fits.

Nice work!

Thanks much for the kind comments. The last verse is maybe a lesson on how lyrics grow organically. I came up with the "kick you out of heaven too" line and really liked it. So the whole stanza is built around that--essentially, I started with that and worked backward, trying to figure out what I can put around that to make the lyric make sense. Just a natural progression of the lyric, and not a personal statement.

Appreciate the thought that this is coming from a specific space--and I'd love to say I write from real life experience. But no story behind this, other than just liking to write stories. Sorry if that disappoints.

Really appreciate the comments and feedback. Thanks much.

Best regards,
