My latest tune; all comments and critiques welcome.

GONE

Running around with your head in the clouds
You've lost your way
Hoping to find that secret path to your golden age
Trying to follow the tracks that you found
To lead you back to hallowed ground
But they're gone
They've washed away
Gone …
Lost in yesterday
Gone …

Leave the past behind
Life is moving on
Tomorrow turns into yesterday
Gone, gone, gone

Hedging your bets and making plans
You don't know how and you don't know when
You might get a second try
To find those things you'd left behind
But they're gone
They've passed away
Gone . . .
Like a shadow's fate
Gone . . .

Leave the past behind
Time is moving on
Tomorrow turns into yesterday
Gone, gone, gone

Where do you go from here?
Where do you go from here?
Where do you go from here?

Leave the past behind
Life is moving on
Tomorrow turns into yesterday
Gone, gone, gone
Gone

If it has strings I will find a way to play it!

Good sounding tune, easy to listen to. I would shorten the intro.

Lovely track. The melody is really interesting and full of surprises. That might make it harder for a casual listener to sing along which could potentially impact marketability - if that is of concern to you. Likewise the length over 5 minutes.
I enjoyed the change up in the music to leading into "Leave the past behind".
It's a really strong song and beautifully recorded and put together.

Very interesting track ... the intro is long, but it works well for me. There is some really original guitar playing / riffs that hold the listener's interest and the vocals (including harmonies) are very strong. Excellent production too.

Well done,

Kevin

Hi TC,

I love the way the song explodes with the hard panned vocals in the chorus and the melodic lead guitar that functions well over the vocals cuz it's playing evenly on the chordal notes. The best thing you do here is explore lots of sonic changes and it's quite an adventurous listen. You remind me of Tom Scholz of Boston if he listened to a lot of Gentle Giant, Camel, and Marillion. Prog that cares more about heart than "look how fast I can play."

Very enjoyable!

Mike

Very cool, very listenable. Some of the music reminded me of Yes and that can only be a good thing. Well done.

Thanks, Jim. It is progressive rock after all, 30 second intro is not really long in this genre.

Thanks! True, this song is not for everyone. I mainly wanted to stretch my legs a bit with this one. I don't expect there is much of a market for it these days, even if I shortened it to 3 minutes somehow. It was challenging and fun to do.

Thanks for the listens and comments.

Peace,
TC

Hi TC:

I enjoyed my listen. Depending on your songwriting objective with this one... it has a great deal going for it. Loved the harmonies and the lyric and melody work well together.
You already know the "problem" with "long songs" so I won't cover ground others have already mentioned. Only you can determine where to take this one... but I wish you the best of luck if you plan to "pitch it." Regards, ----Dave

Thanks, Kevin. I'm glad you liked it. I always try to come up with something cool on the guitar parts to offset my struggles with the vocals.

Thanks, Mike. It's fun to play fast but I prefer something the listener can sink their teeth into over raw speed. This was a challenging tune with all the key changes, and rhythmic syncopation.

Thanks, Calvin. I tried to keep it interesting which is pretty important in a 5+ minute tune.

Thanks, Ricki. Thanks for the comparison to Yes but I don't think my vocals hold a candle to Jon Anderson.

Many thanks; I appreciate the listens and comments.

Nicely put together. Causes me to think of a band named Wishbone Ash.

This sounds like 80's Crosby Stills and Nash, or some of the esoteric 70's soft rock groups like Alan Parsons, Ambrosia stuff like that. Your style reads alternative rock, I dont think it is alternative rock, it's retro

I enjoyed listening, I thought the song could have climaxed into bigger choruses, the only hook I hear is that gone part where you hit some different chords.

Nice clean soft rock recording

Thanks, Dave. I don't plan to pitch this song; I just wanted to stretch my legs a bit. I have had elements of this song in my head for quite a while but held off because of the complexity. I finally did it!

Thanks, Martin. Wishbone Ash keeps coming up as a reference on some of my tunes. I never even listened to them all that much (but I do like them).

Thanks, Trent. It certainly is a fusion of styles. You mean my "style" on the soundcloud page? I would call it progressive rock but I never get wrapped around genre labels. It does have retro elements. The "Gone gone gone" is the hook, and, yes, there is only one. I'm glad you enjoyed the listen.

As always, I appreciate everyone taking the time to listen and comment.

TC,

Loved this! It was an adventure for sure. Killer drums and loved the lead guitar drive at the PC or verse endings. Projects like these can have many options for sure. Sugs from me? I might consider giving a more dramatic guitar "answer" after the "gone" in the earlier parts of the song to give those abrupt vocal stops more of a contrasting reaction--no big deal however. I wouldn't mind hearing the very ending synth or organ going out with the "leslie" effect a little longer and dramatic.

What great vocals & harmonies, reminded me yea l little of Yes, but also The Who! Great song TC!

steady-eddie.

Very nicely produced. I enjoyed the listen.

My only thought is to convert "tomorrow turns into yesterday" to "tomorrow becomes yesterday." I think it would sing a bit better.

But, excellent piece of work.

Hey TC,

Well, that was certainly a sonic journey. Really listenable, and great arrangement.

Thanks, Eddie. I will definitely consider your suggestions. You are right, there are a lot of things you can do with a prog rock tune. Good idea on the leslie thing at the end.

But, excellent piece of work.

Thanks, Dave. Someone else suggested "Tomorrow slips into yesterday" which I kinda liked. Using "becomes" gives those middle words 2 beats instead of 3 and would be easier to sing.

Thanks, Nite. It was challenging and fun to do.

TC - this is excellent. Sounds like a song that could have been written by Yes. Fine guitar work and riffs. Very melodic and memorable in an ear worm kind of way.

In terms of constructive criticism, the third line of the chorus could be better. Sounds like the vocals are fighting the music a bit. Maybe try rephrasing the lyrics. Other than that, sounds great!

Definitely "prog", but very accessible prog.
A nice listen...and great advice.

I love words. They say so much.

Almost like an Alan Parson's song, which is a great thing to me! I think you really sold your hook. The chorus with the harmonies is really well done. The instrumental break is great. Wonderful song!
