I Was Hoping You’d Deny It ©2017 Robert George BMI

I’d put up with your disguises
And ignored the eyes behind your mask
Then I found a pack of matches,
From a cheap motel in Natchez
And your carelessness forced me to ask

But I was hoping you’d deny it
And tell me that I’d got it wrong
But you didn’t even try it
Cos bein’ weak had made you strong
You told me then and there,
Who and when and where
And yet the trouble was,
I still had faith in us
So I was hoping you’d deny it

I could see it when you told me
You could hardly stand to bear the shame
Had our love been growing colder,
Was it more than you could shoulder
Maybe I should try and share the blame

Cos I was hoping you’d deny it
And tell me that I’d got it wrong
But you didn’t even try it
Cos bein’ weak had made you strong
You told me then and there,
Who and when and where
And yet the trouble was,
I still had faith in us
So I was hoping you’d deny it

O since the day I said goodbye
Ev’ry night has been a curse
I could’ve let you live a lie
Cos the truth hurts so much worse

Yeah, I was hoping you’d deny it
And tell me that I’d got it wrong
But you didn’t even try it
Cos bein’ weak had made you strong
You told me then and there,
Who and when and where
And yet the trouble was,
I still had faith in us
So I was hoping you’d deny it

Couch,

Your usual great stuff. I'm really curious if you write with a melody in mind. What I mean is, I also read "Is There Somewhere We Can Go," and it's very poetic in style. Do you write poetry as well? You must, and I'm betting it's pretty brilliant. My curiosity aside, this is well done. Enjoyed the read.

Dee, I don't write with a specific melody in mind, but I write with melody in mind as regards meter, structure, rhyme and flow. Meter is almost a lost art now. but if you're going to write lyrics independent from a composer with the idea they'll do it later, it's a must. that's how all the old lyricists would've done it. Lieber and Stoller once wrote a melody and a lyric one night while staying in separate hotel rooms. when they met the next day, the lyric and melody matched perfectly. This would have been impossible had the lyric been a metric mess. Rap is a very low form of lyric writing and gives no attention to it at all. unfortunately, that attitude and laziness has also infected other genres as well.

I write poetry here and there. I'll see if I can bump some. smile
