I have a song that pays tribute to the 1980's.
I think it is a very strong song. It is one of my best. I want to try to get it to people so they know it exists. I am going online and looking up any 80's groups or websites. I think that would be my best bet to get it to listeners who would relate to the song. I am wondering if anyone has anymore suggestions.
Here it is in case anyone wants to offer any feedback.
Thanks! smile

Michelle,

MAB here. I hope you are a lefty with that pink guitar. We need a few more lefties around here. LOL!

You might keep your eyes and ears open for 80's tribute bands. They really love the spirit of those days. Having come from there as well, I know it is cool to get a song that reminds me of that. The down side is that they are paid to play the songs OF the 80's, but members of some of the bands are probably from that era, so they might be interested. There are a lot of cover bands doing that era now. Tribute and cover bands or ones that do one certain album from start to finish are really popular.

Like everything songwriting related, you just have to keep your ears and eyes open and always look for popularity I would suggest you also concentrate on finding ARTISTS to write your songs with. It helps when you have a ready made platform for the songs and the days of getting outside cuts have diminished greatly. Never give up but do be prepared to adapt.

I know a guy who turned down a cut on a novelty song. His friends talked him out of it, saying that if he became known for novelty songs, he would never be able to do anything else.

Well,
I listened to a bit of the song and basically liked it. It may be a bit too long and
was a bit muffled at the start of the song. I haven't pitched anything for a couple
of years not sure who may be looking.

Novelty Songs?
They have been done and sucessfully, I might add.
THE ONE IS ON THE RIGHT, Johnny Cash
A BOY NAMED SUE, Johnny Cash
ALL OF THE MONKEYS AIN'T IN THE ZOO Tommy Collins
AIN'T NO MONEY IN THIS DEAL, George Jones

Uh, Marc, you a lefty I think, i am a lefty, but play right handed.
So uh, what's that got to do with the price of Tea in China?

Hey Ray, yes I am a lefty. Just been that way all my life but I only do three things left handed. I play guitar, write, and eat left handed. Everything else, golf, baseball, football, etc, I do right handed. Yeah, what does that have to do with anything?
Hey, I saw on another thread here you were telling people I was going to call you out for being "so old." Actually I eat breakfast a couple days a week with former members of the Sonny James band. So we are actually the OLD ONES LOL! But I don't really think Johnny or George are going to be up for recording any songs, humorous or otherwise due to their currently being dead and all.

Michelle, Something you might want to consider, is what you are considering a "Novelty" song. The actual definition of that would be something like "The Streak" or "Mississippi Squirrel Revival" by Ray Stevens, "Flying Purple People Eater" by Sheb Wooley, or even more recent, "The Macarena" or "All about the Bass" by Megan Trainor. There are artists like Weird Al Yankovick, and Cletus T. Judd, in country that do parodies, but those are comedy versions of existing hit songs and often are written with the writers of the original songs.

Now, if you are thinking of a "humorous" song, that is another situation. "FRIENDS IN LOW PLACES" by Garth Brooks, "RED SOLO CUP" by Toby Keith, are examples of this. There are artists that do these types of songs, but again, they often write them themselves. And one of my friends and co-writers did get a cut, "DRINK MORE BEER" on comedian, Rodney Carrington, who does a lot of music comedy. And yes. I even had one "TOO MUCH BLOOD IN MY ALCOHOL LEVEL" on Country artist David Ball. So they do happen.

I believe they are good to have. My career in Nashville is due to a comedy song called "THE GRAND OPENING" which is about a guy who is performing getting notes onstage that his pants fly is unzipped. That song opened nearly every door in Nashville, leading to my first cut with SHELBY LYNNE, working with publishers, record deals and a TON OF PERFORMING opportunities over the years. So I hold them dear. It is also a great idea as an ATTENTION getter, in a world where EVERYONE seems to take themselves so seriously. So I think it is great to have and to pursue.

On the "reality" side, you really have to find the right artists. A lot of artists simply DON'T WANT to do novelty or light songs, because that is not their image. Comedians, often will do music segments, but not really full songs. They are not played on the radio like the old days of Stevens and Wooley, as comedy went to things like Sirrius radio or pod casting.

My biggest advice to you, would be to find someone doing what you are asking about. A "Google search" can help you in that respect. As I mentioned 80's tribute bands or comedians can point you in the direction.

Good luck,
MAB

Humm,
I didn't think I had any Novelty songs but do have at least one called THE SONGWRITER'S LAMENT. And maybe another GRAB YOUR COAT. I say write what you can and never count the cost. You never know when someone is looking for that exact song!

Ray, it's really funny you have a song called "The Songwriter's Lament." I have another friend who wrote that same title about me, several years ago. Just has a lot of four letter words in it. But was pretty funny. Never thought about it till you brought it up. Interesting.

A lot of times novelty songs can do well in YouTube. By well, I mean number of hits.

Especially novelty songs that are current.

Funny, stupid songs tend to get the most hits.
