A few days ago a story surfaced in the Chicago news media about a six year old girl who insisted that she didn't want any party or presents for her birthday but instead wanted to help feed the homeless and less fortunate instead. This piece is inspired by that story. It questions too if she may retain that legacy throughout her lifetime.

LEGACY OF A GENEROUS HEART

c2017 Brian Beecher

A six year old girl would stomp her feet
Told mama she donít want no birthday treat
There are those who are living on a prayer
I want to help feed them this I swear

She would aim all of her energy
Toward helping those much poorer than she
To encourage them to make a new start
What might be the legacy of a generous heart

The wounded healer soothes our fears
Although it might not like what it hears
There is a beautiful kite flying high
Leading the pack for future guiding lights

Prosperity, growth, and stability
Should be there for more of us to see
Snuggled up against her mamaís arms
She wished for the world to share the warmth

She would aim all of her energy
Toward helping those much poorer than she
To encourage them to make a new start
What might be the legacy of a generous heart

We can go a long way as we figure out
What works and release what donít
Tough decisions need to be made
Will this little girl show us the way

She would aim all of her energy
Toward helping those much poorer than she
To encourage them to make a new start
What might be the legacy of a generous heart
