“The Charms of Tennessee”

http://www.broadjam.com/artists/songs.php?artistID=45037&mediaID=323250

As I’m drivin’ down Interstate 65 towards Tennessee,
I roll the window down to feel the wind tug at my hair.
I sing all my favorite songs since no one else can hear,
And soon I'll be free again and home in Tennessee.

Words just can’t describe the way I feel inside,
To be coming home at last to where I long to be.

(Chorus)
I’ve been away too long, I’ll be glad to get back home,
Tennessee, Tennessee you are my favorite place.
There’s nowhere else on Earth that I'll ever want to be,
I can’t wait to get back to the charms of Tennessee.

Now I'm wanting first to see my lovely flame named Lora-Lee,
The first thing that we'll do is set the stars ablaze at night.
She'll show me every charm there is to see right from her arms,
And nowhere can compare to that jewel called Tennessee.

(Bridge)
Wherever I may roam, there’s one place I call home,
That’s why they’ll lay me down, in the heart of Tennessee.

(instrumental)

(Chorus)
I’ve been away too long, I’ll be glad to get back home,
Tennessee, Tennessee you are my favorite place.
There’s nowhere else on Earth that I'll ever want to be,
I can’t wait to get back to the charms of Tennessee.
Yeah there’s nowhere else on Earth that I'll ever want to be,
I can’t wait to get back home to the charms of Tennessee.

Nice sentiment about Tennesee. I learned about the state through Elvis Presley when I was young. Still haven't been, though. Maybe someday. I agree with Matin on the singer. Well done!

Hi Dave,

Thanks again for your positive feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

The old question answered "What is more important the lyrics or the artist?"

Both of course.

Hi Ross,

What a nice pleasant nostalgic song. I also think you have an interesting vocal tone. I can see potential especially with some further production. I think you could make this song a nice cross between classic country with a hint of Bluegrass vibe--mandolin would be nice sprinkled in and even handling the solo area perhaps. Add a subtle harmony an an upright bass, maybe just a tambo or spoons for percussion. Sweet!

One sug or opinion, I'd like to see the bridge not utilize the "Tennessee" summarizing line; let the verse and chorus handle that thereby letting your "bridge" digress both musically and lyrical meaning. Rather than summarize there, maybe make a contrasting or dramatic statement which could even leave you hanging slightly--which then will empower the final Tennessee line when you do return to it in the final chorus-- experiment with the bridge area.

Fine song!

steady-eddie.

Hi Eddie,

Thank you for your detailed feedback which is very much appreciated. I will discuss you suggestions with co-writer Jeffrey Ullsperger and I will get back to you in the next 48hours.

Unfortunately, that was not me singing but demo artist Jason Adams who has a great voice.

Thanks again.

Ross.

I've been driving down Interstate-65 to Tennessee for 42 years, and the glamor has long since faded.

Hi Jim,

Variety is the spice of life they say. Let's hope that you don't have to do it another 42 years.

Hi Eddie,

I hope that I understood your suggestions.

Here's my attempt at it. I took the last line of the bridge and replaced the last line of the of the song with it and thought up a new last line for the bridge.

(Bridge)
I have travelled this old world but no where have I found,
A place as beautiful as where I am right now.

(instrumental)

(Chorus)
I’ve been away too long, I’ll be glad to get back home,
Tennessee, Tennessee you are my favorite place.
There’s nowhere else on Earth that I'll ever want to be,
I can’t wait to get back to the charms of Tennessee.
Yeah there’s nowhere else on Earth that I'll ever want to be,
That’s why they’ll lay me down, in the charms of Tennessee.

Hey Ross!

I really like using that exclusive last line on the last chorus..........as that put's an exclamation point on the song's ending giving it a really special ending keeping similar yet more final, also "literally" speaking. Nice idea there! I will take a look at your bridge tomorrow evening if you don't mind. My concern here is that the bridge "isn't digressing musically enough or taking you to a different place." That's what a bridge IMO should do-- take you away, then bring you back--hence, that's why its called a bridge--(not implying that you don't know that). I'm also NOT saying the bridge is bad mind you, I just think this bridge could be much more dramatic and effective with this ballad. With this tweak, the bridge would be both more dramatic and more "breaking or climactic." When this happens, not only does your bridge gain more identity, you also empower the final chorus which in turn evokes more emotion from the listener--JMO. I'll get back with you soon, I want to experiment with a bridge melody tweak and also with literally not repeating the "home" line for lyric digression and maybe a slightly different 2nd line statement as well. I hope you don't mind. (You can use, lose, or perhaps augment on my idea).

steady-eddie.

Okay Ross,

I've been experimenting with your Bridge both musically and lyrically. If you don't like this, that's fine too. Here is what I did and why........

As I said, IMO, your present bridge doesn't digress and has a "summarizing" vibe more like a chorus or song ending. I wanted to demonstrate how to use a minor chord here to distinguish the commencement of a new music direction and more "lifting" bridge ending rather than summarizing--let your last chorus do the summarizing and let the bridge add some drama! I also wanted to achieve the same principle with the bridge lyrics to initiate a break in the story, yet relevant. I chose these lyrics as I thought they demonstrated some slight action/movement for a bridge transition--and they also play off of the verse 1 lyrics to connect with the driving.

This is just one idea for you to use or lose--you may come up with a better idea. Now just because the chords are there, doesn't mean you're hearing the melody that I'm singing--contact me PM, and I'll get you that (if you have interest). I personally like how it sounds and feel that it gives this song a great change-up which is needed with the melody reps. Regards, steady-eddie.

Bridge:

Am//// Chicago's far behind
F//// As I cross Kentucky's line
Am//// Tennessee, I can hear you call'n me! G/ (pause)

short instrumental (verse melody)

Chorus 3 finali

Hi Eddie, Thank you for the suggestions they look very good to me. I appreciate the effort you put into this. Its a shame that we are in time zones. I can see that these changes will give the song a needed boost. I'll see what co-writer Jeffrey thinks and let you know.

Ross.
