The more apropo question is, is anyone looking for songs.... Lol

Every songwriter out there has access to home recording gear and production. They'd rather just write their own, and produce it themselves

Hello Michelle,

If you have noticed the rancor and animosity that is going on within our country, you see some of the problems that Patriotic songs run into. As a country we are at each other's throats and a patriotic song can actually be a detriment to an artist's career. So they will tend to write their own or avoid them completely. It is easy to come off as a "Jingoistic American", or too "Republican or Democrat." Everyone draws conclusions and take sides. It is very polarizing and actually quite depressing. No matter what side you are on, someone is going to attack you for your stance and you will end up spending more time with angry people than giving out positive energy. People still do it, but it rarely ends up well. We all seem to have different ideas on what PATRIOTISM means and all prefer our own views rather than anyone else's view.

Aside from that, there are a few reasons for where we are.

One of the things that patriotic songs, or issue oriented songs benefited from were being "PEOPLE'S SOAPBOXES." They were the way to protest, or claim belief or agreement with a personal message. We could stand up and be counted.
The INTERNET did away with that. Everyone suddenly had their own soapbox, and didn't need anyone else to sing or tell them about it. And when you have THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of people saying the same thing, one more just didn't matter anymore except to the people writing or performing them.

BURN OUT.
After 9-11, patriotic songs were everywhere. Several hit the radio, every writer and artist had tons of them. For a brief moment, we pulled together. A couple of years on, people burned out because they were everywhere. And of course, again the Internet minimized the "special nature" of them. They became a dime a dozen.

After 15 years of war, and as confrontational as the public discourse has become, people burned out on War or frankly patriotism itself. They didn't want to hear about it any more. And so from time to time, one might come through with a more subdued message, "Lee Brice's "I Drive Your Truck" might be one, mostly they are very few and far between. Like Christmas songs, everyone seems to have one.

They are still done, still written, but you are in waters with a LOT of people doing the same thing. And it is very very hard to find something DIFFERENT to say, which is the hardest thing of any song. But they are around. Like anything, if you look hard enough, you will probably find avenues for them. Aligning with Christian themed groups, or Veteran's groups, will lean more in that way, and of course, there are always former soldiers, sailor and airmen, that are also singers. So it can find a home. But you have to look hard for it.

I have one called "24 NOTES" (The number of notes in the song TAPS) which was recorded by a co-writers band, Boot Hill Bandits, in California, and has been paired up with a veteran's organization, BUGLES ACROSS AMERICA, which provides trumpet players and buglers to play at Veteran funerals. So it can be done, but had I not written it with the nephew of a World War II veteran and he being the producer of the band, that probably would have not happened.

Like everything. You have to find your avenue. I would say people are NOT LOOKING for them, but if you search hard enough and use some imagination, you might find an avenue on your own.

MAB

As soon as we have another 9/11 they'll be back.

Most of these guys are writing WITH 3 songwriters from Music Row.....Most can't write a lick alone....It just looks good on their resumes...

The meaning of patriotism today depends on who you ask. I just posted a song on the MP3 Board which reflects exactly the social and political times we live in.

It is called No More Cash and in this song you will hear what takes up a lot more space in the NEWS MEDIA than old school patriotism these days.
