These are most of the 2017 Just Plain Folks New Folk Nominees on Spotify. (4 are missing). You need Spotify Software to listen, if you have it already, just click play. If not, they have free and trial versions you can download to try out.

I'm very impressed by the folk nominees here. The authenticity and the professional writing. Might be the strongest category you have here. Winners.

Well, it has only 4 missing, some, like Country, have over 10-15 missing.

Believe me, people have listened, lol. It's a great idea, people are at least comparing their music to them. I thought this music was great, I particularly like questions for mr einstein.

I think it's all great, but then I have heard every song a dozen times in all genres, they are all playing here in a non stop loop about 18 hours a day, so it takes about 4 days to listen just to the nominated songs once. I learned long ago it takes 3 full listens for a song to really stick with you. I have songs I am so-so on the first one or two times, then they click and I love them. Some I love immediately, but tire of much more quickly. That's why pop music comes and goes so fast, it has to appeal on one listen or you're dead, whereas we have so many people listening over and over across 6 rounds of screening (plus the final) that the songs we often choose get better on more listens. I bet at least a few more songs would resonate with you on that genre if you let it play through multiple times while you work on the computer etc. I look forward to having all the songs in the judging round available for folks to hear. I think they'll love most of it. But we trying to pick a wide range of types of songs as we screen so if you don't hate at least one song, we may not have done our job pushing the envelope. hah.

I liked every one I heard, just the Einstein song sounded to me like Paul Simon and drew me in most. I gave them all passing grades just for how well they were done and sound, you could tell these songs weren't about winning anything, they were about being real good songs. I'm sure the pop songs many would annoy me, but that's how it is when I turn ion the radio, so they would be right on par. Did anybody listen to big wide rooms...can't find my way through? You can hear it here if not: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uZwAG8vc_F4 The song is a nice steady tune, and suddenly comes a musical interlude at 2:00 I was tapping my foot and then i couldn't tap it any more, I'm like what the hell happened here. I listened several different times, and I realized it was an odd time signature, I haven't been able to figure out what time sig that is, anybody know? But it supports the idea of not being able to get through...being lost That's art!

Hey Trent,
Glad ya took the time to listen, and get back here to comment! Lotsa good stuff there, eh?!!!
The only criteria JPF has for judging is "Does it move you"....
I have limited time on the internet, by choice, so thanks for pointing me to a few!!!

I think it's a simple 4/4....Although, because of the instrumentation it almost sounds like 8/8 or something...Sorry, I have limited knowledge, but I think it breaks down to a simple 4/4:-) Midnite

Actually, it's 6/4. I didn't catch it at first cause it's slowed down. Refreshing to vhear a real band who can do tempo changes not being locked in to a metronome.
But the count in that section is. 1-2-3-4-, 5-6.....1-2-3-4-, 5-6
Or you could call it simply one measure of 4/4 and one measure of 2/4
Count there would be 1-2-3-4, 1-2 ....1-2-3-4-, 1-2
Not as exotic as I thought but still done for a reason

Hmmm, I'm thinking now it's 12/8
Same count as above, it's just that the music is cut time, giving it the 12/8 feel
Pretty cool

I don't want to say which ones I like as I don't want to influence (for good or bad) what potential voters might think. We still only have one listener here on the boards, I'd think it would be a great exercise to discuss songwriting and production. Glad we found something to agree on TrentB.. I prefer this version of you.
I am going to post this on Facebook to try that out.

Lol, the one constant is that I love music, and love discussing it, not a lot of places to do that any more.
It's surprising to me that more people are not responding here
if you listen to the music you can hear how dedicated and serious these artists are. They deserve some recognition.
It's one thing to be a hobbyist, record some unfinished songs, with a halfway decent sounding recording,. sendit into some placement sites, and then say you have no shot
It's another to be out there performing your songs, really trying to pursue a career in music, and really working hard to get your songs recorded if you don't perform.
These songs reflect the latter. I didn't enter, but if I did, I would not have expected to be listed here. And you do need good recordings

Persistence is mandatory. The pursuit of quality for an initial recording to use as a demo takes some investment in yourself if you are unknown and at the starting line.
That quest has been made easier by the new self recording software available but still requires a knowledgeable person on the recording/engineering end.The choice of mics is also a very important piece for storytelling and spoken word.
Youtube is a great supporter of quick release "demo" videos, but it must be quality to stand out above the "noise" and be recognized as worthy of multiple listens. The challenge then becomes "Who knows it exists and how to find it".
I love this site as JPF brings all the players together, from writers/performers to publishing, marketing, distribution, and production. I have shared JPF with others who are at the starting line and are building up the courage to share what has, until now, been a nearly secret part of themselves.
My hat is off to all who have worked to build JPF into what it has become now and onward into it's future. I will continue spreading the word and offer my experiences to any desiring to learn from them.
