On some pages where I go there are advertisements at B&H Photo for Super 8 MM Film as well as 16 MM Film. Anyone still using film cameras? I guess the past is not dead just yet!

Do you? have you searched for related items?? Advertisers have the ability to serve up ads they THINK you want to see. A few years back I was checking out the new Kia Cadenza---nice care but went back to Acura--and for a long time afterwards everywhere I went, I saw Kia ads. It's now a given that I see ads for stuff related to my searches

No, I didn't look for those items. Guess they are just advertising them. However anytime I look something up it then shows up on Web Sites I do check.

Simple really Ray/You're old and they know older people used that technology whereas young people don't know what it is and don't care. You might be likely to have old film laying around or 8mm video tapes which have be4en around since the 90's if you had the money... we used one for many years doing JPF events. If that is the best match for your profile they have on you (and each of us, it's quite scary how much they know including when you're likely to die) then you get that ad. It may not work on you, but I assure you they believe that people LIKE you have and will be interested.

Well Now! I used to have a 8MM Film Editor. you could put a reel of film on it and go thru it and cut out the parts that were bad and glue the good parts together. A buddy wanted to borrow it to do some editing so I loaned it to him. Well I never got it back. He died. his wife died and I still have a few reels I may want to edit. But I see there is a film editor at B&H Photo for over $200.00 dollars. I paid 25 dollars for the one I had. BUT that was back in the stone age! But nite, don't give up those cylnders just yet! Or black and white 8 mm, super 8 mm or 16 mm film! I'm just surprised that Kodak still makes it. And you can still get TriX B&W 35 mm film. I have 3 good 35mm cameras that I could sell, for 10 cents on the dollar and some extra lenses, but I think I will just keep them. Pretty soon we are going to get lectricity and I don't want to miss out!

Well I still have one of the last Canon (well it was labelled as one--they "outsourced the build" ) SLR cameras, the T60. Nice little camera even though it was nowhere near top of the line. But then all electronic cameras came along, so I bought a Canon Powershot SX110 IS. Decent but by no means high end once again. Both sit among other long term no see items in my office For the last several years my camera has been a smartphone and an iPad--replaced by my current Galaxy Tab. Very convenient and electronic editing is great. There are services that will transfer your old formats into digital formats if you are interested..that may be your best option

Careful when you finally get 'lectricity in your home, Ray. Purdy soon you'll have a microwave oven and you'll get enough 'lectricity in your corn bread alone to kill you.

Hey Stevie, Just sprayed beer on my monitor ! Ahh geez....LOL... Hey Ray and John, my daughter did a commercial ( film ) shoot only 2 yrs ago, and they said this will be the "last" commercial ever filmed on 35mm movie film......ever. It was on a yacht, and as the extra,I was down in the hold with my hands in a black bag transferring the film into cans, by touch, to be put on a speed boat and processed on the mainland, ready for viewing that night. I thought I was a part of history. Wrong ! Although there is all the digital technology in the world, high end cinematographers simply choose to use film, and still do so. Something about the "light". So Ray, you're just in with the "cool" set mate. Don't go wearing out those wax cylinders. cheers, niteshift

Nite,
One elderly mountain woman got her first microwave oven and asked her husband, "Eulis, How do you microwave a 'possum?" Exasperated with her ignorance he replied, "Eunice, you don't microwave a possum!!! Possum's got to simmer."

Hey Niteshift---read some time ago that true photographers and pros still use film...so I get the film use as well.

Hey Stevie, Goddammit mate, you've done it again, and my monitor is covered in froth..... if someone walked in they'd wonder what the heck is going on. We don't do possums down my way, but I do great roo stew. Hey John, yes, from what I've been informed, anything that requires high end visuals is still shot on 35mm film, and at the top end on 60 mm. Apparently, cinematographers demand it. Go figure ? Top end folks have the call, in my opinion. cheers, niteshift

Hi Ray and fellow "responders:"
Film versus digital! Remember the prices of high-end 35mm cameras and gear? Almost every garage sale and used gear outlet will have a couple of those technological marvels for pennies on the dollar. My brother in law was a big format camera freak and he thought digital was going to be a passing fad. Wrong!
...and yes, I get it... some photographers never lose the desire to be creative in the dark-room as they develop their shots.
Ray, your original thread covered the subject of internet "tracking" and it is true. Visit guitar center on-line and look at something of interest and they will track you with "teaser ads" no matter where you go for the next several days. To me, this is a serious invasion of privacy... but I guess that "went out the window" a few years ago. LOL!

Dave---electronics actually allows a great deal of "algorithmic" ceativity. Lots of apps around that will modify your image. My current favourite is Prisma...check it out.

Hi John:
I agree with you... the benefits of "digital photography" far outweigh film. It was my brother in law who "championed" film until suddenly, a blinding flash of light converted him. LOL! All that business of having to go into the darkroom or send a roll of film away to be developed... and getting back tons of crappy shots cannot compare with instant viewing/feedback while one is in the field.
With the "magic of programming" we now have apps and programs available to us for making our prints nearly as iconic as Ansel Adams. (Well, maybe in our mind's-eye!)
Have a great weekend. ----Dave

Well, A few years ago Kodak quit making Kodachrome Film. In case anyone remembers there were only 5 Labs that could Process the Film as the film started out as black and white film and the color was added in the Lab. Who knows, they may start making it again. As for Mechanical 35 MM Cameras, I think Nikon may still offer one and with a scanner that takes film, positive or negative you can scan it into your computer and print out the pictures. Buying a good 35 MM Camera for a song at a yard sale could be a good bet as the film is still being made and there are still places that can process it if you like.
Humm whazzat? Algorithmic creativity is what I need. I am still looking for some photo software that allows me to select individual photos to send to a disc as well as to edit. Haven't been able to find one that will do it.

Hey Dave,
Yep, gotta agree that digital for ease of use, in a commercial world is much preferred. And for the layman also. It tries to make up for a lack of talent in composition, framing, and the lack of use of light upon the subject.
I'm stunned and also impressed what the young folks are doing, simply with an iPad, yet put side by side with film, the results are glaringly and markedly insufficient. Kinda like with music, in that anyone CAN record a song on their iPad without any musical knowledge.
No judgement here, but I'm for the old school, where "the take" is paramount and requires skill and objectivity. If you can just do it 100x over, what's the point ?
cheers, niteshift

Hiya Niteshift
Don't forget that the pros probably take hundreds of shots, then select what they want to move forward with.
And I expect it is actually the current limitations in Ecameras that keep the old school photographers in film. This may disappear as Ecameras advance...and as the pros disappear into the sunset. having said that, just like vinyl, it is unlikley to disappear completely but settle in as a niche market
Technology has taken over a lot of creativity. Bandcamp is a good example in music. But I expect you'd never hear\see a true professional using it for a recording.
Cheers

Well Holy Vinyl! I see vinyl records are becoming popular again and are increasing in sales. Some of those old vinyl records are now worth a fortune! I probably have a gold, "lead", mine in my cabinet of LP's. I do have one Hank Williams LP they were offering over 100 dollars for several years ago.

Hey Ray:
Vinyl! Every day, I see conflicting reports about the success and/or failure of vinyl records making a comeback. I don't buy them unless they are Used LP's with Jackets in a Goodwill Store or Garage Sale of my favorites from "back in the day."
When we were young, like most couples, we moved often... usually upward depending on the job or promotion... LOL! Each time, my stuff would get jettisoned by my wife while I was off at work and I would only discover them gone after the move was made. Women are so "crafty" in outsmarting us guys this way. Now, her closet would make Imelda Marcos jealous and mine is even smaller than the one I had in our last home. Drat!
I'm still in mourning about the loss of "The Alan Parsons Project." Oh well, that's life, isn't it!
Gotta get on the road again. Back soon.

Well, Yer correct Brian! I am old. Now I'm seeing old AM, FM Table Radios like they made in the 50's after the second world war at B&H Photo also coming up on some Web Pages. Crosley and another brand. It is probably Dr. Wommungs Time Machine that is calling all the fuss! And a Lica Rangefinder 33MM camera. Next thing you know they will be bringing back the standard transmission in cars. If they would only bring back 1950 car prices! And I did see a new Vinyl Pressing Plant Photo in Indy Music Web Page. well I ain't dead yet!

As many people have noticed, Vinyl is making a pretty big comeback. Many, many artists are now offering Vinyl records, classic music stores are popping up all over the place, audiophiles are all over the place, most of the big box stores are now selling turntables. And Nashville has been expanding it's Vinyl pressing plants. Many people have a big attraction to them, so as long as demand is there, they will be around.
Most things are like that. What are some of the biggest television shows? RESTORING older things, repurposing items out of barns, specialty shops, auctions, etc, Some of the most popular shows? ANTIQUE ROADSHOW, AMERICAN PICKERS, PAWN STARS. Everything old is new again. If someone likes it, there is a niche for it.
My Dad and I were involved in the early days of the collector car boom. We restored old classic Mercedes, Jaquars, Muscle cars, back in the 70's. And it is pretty simple actually. People grow up with something, it disappears, then they make money and start acquiring all the things that remind them of their youth. In cars, celebrities like Reggie Jackson. Kenny Rogers, Jay Leno, and others led that boom and it goes on today in a billion plus dollar industry.
So if you have something you like that disappears, don't always write it off. Like Mark Twain said, "The rumors of my death were somewhat overstated." Even Ray might come back in style. I wouldn't surprise to see them be able to bring back Stonewall Jackson, Red Foley, and Boxcar Willie from the dead and do some of his songs. And he can take the videos on 8 MM and edit on his equipment.
Go get em Ray. What goes around comes around.
