SNUGGLING WITH MY DEMONS
(Kurt Fortmeyer)
Dad Zone Music ASCAP

I'd been that good guy way too long followed every rule
Holding back instead of acting like a full-grown fool
When bad intentions came to call I firmly stood my ground
'Til one day I said "Screw it all" and turned my life around

I told my better angels they could go piss up a rope
And not come back unless they brought a sack of killer dope
I'm smoking packs of cigarettes and drinking quarts of beer
I'm snuggling with my demons and I kinda like it here

Now everything that's bad for me becomes my comfort food
From time to time I take a pill to elevate my mood
I'm coveting my neighbor's ass and things that I don't have
I bathe myself in misery like it's medicated salve

Since I told my better angels they could go piss up a rope
And not come back unless they brought a sack of killer dope
I'm smoking packs of cigarettes and drinking quarts of beer
I'm snuggling with my demons and I kinda like it here

As long as I've got gas to burn I won't hit the breaks
I've still got a lot to learn from my own mistakes

Yeah I told my better angels they could go piss up a rope
And not come back unless they brought a sack of killer dope
I'm smoking packs of cigarettes and drinking quarts of beer
I'm snuggling with my demons and I kinda like it here
Yeah I'm snuggling with my demons and I kinda like it here
It's a real nice place and I kinda like here
I don't care what mama said I kinda like it here

It's brand new, so it might have to wait it's turn recording-wise. I'm definitely hearing a fiddle and the same backing vocalists that I used on "Jesus Wouldn't Do It That Way". Probably that whole same line-up, plus fiddle.
My CDs don't generally have any coarse language on them, so I have mixed feelings about including a song with the phrase "go piss up a rope", but I might get over it.
Thanks for listening (and commenting).

Kurt,

This is a really enjoyable listen. Love the lyrics, and you perform it well. I get the sensitivity around how some may react to the language. But sometimes it just fits: " . . . told my better angels they could go piss up a rope" is perfect; more so because it works perfectly with the next line. Go for it, but also because it nails the transition from the verse in a way that resonates. And a great finish to the song.

Umm, not sure I hear the fiddle you're thinking of. But I've always leaned towards keeping things stripped. If you go that direction, I'd have sit in the background rather than featuring it.

Will listen to this a couple times more, I'm sure.

Deej

Thanks, Deej!
The language absolutely fits the song, but just as there are gigs and venues where I would not sing a song like this, I am reluctant to soil an entire CD with a song that some folks might find objectionable (with good reason). Some folks would like a whole CD of songs like this, but some would likely throw the whole thing in the trash over one song...and never buy another from me. This blog piece may explain my quandary a little better.
In terms of a fiddle, go listen to "(I Got My Heart) Broke In" and/or "Dickel, Strait & Jones"...or some early-70s David Allan Coe or Bobby Bare...or Robert Earl Keen's "West Textures" album. Some good old sawing would fit right in.
In any case, thanks for taking the time to listen, and post a comment.

HA! I misread the title and thought it was STRUGGLING with my Demons. Was I ever surprised! Snuggling makes a whole lot more sense. grin

Since now you're celebrating all these bad habits, and the past was when you were following all the rules, in the bridge, instead of:
I've still got a lot to learn from my own mistakes"

would it be better to say:
"I've got nothing left to learn..."?

Just a thought. Well focused and a clever write, Kurt.

Well, obviously (at least to me) that's where the hook came from...a twist on a common phrase. It was way more fun to write a song about snuggling with my demons than it would have been to write another one about facing reality.

Thanks for thinking.
If "my mistakes" were following all the rules and behaving myself, that might work, but the first line of the bridge sets up the whole bad behavior until I crash and burn follow-through, which was my intention.
Of course, this whole song is a fantasy. I am doomed to being a good boy.

Willie probably has it together way better than I do, and he's not the only country artist smoking pot.
Thanks for checking it out!
