A friend of mine, Ray Heardon, is a great guitar player who plays with Lyle Lovette's Large Band, his own band, McBride and the Ride and others. He had a hit song with Kenny Chesney, "Me and You" and is part owner and operator of his family's bar, HANDLEBAR J'S in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Recently, he picked up another gig as guitar player for Don McLean. While they were in New York City last week, I think playing Carnagie Hall, they were back stage.
Ray asked Don, "What does AMERICAN PIE Really MEAN?"

Don said, "It means I never have to work another freaking day of my life if I don't want to."

Words of Wisdom to live by.

HAH! First belly laugh of the day!

I'm not sure how that success can be duplicated these days...On the other hand, even back "in the day", those artists had to pay some serious dues for years and years before they had their "breakthrough".

Don McClean had "American Pie".

Jimmy Buffett had "Margaritaville"....Both of those songs turned into other "enterprises".

Both had toured endlessly in small venues, and had written many other incredible songs before they struck gold...

Question: Can that be duplicated these days?...i can only think of TV theme songs, and even those are dated.

The theme from :

Friends

Big Bang Theory

CSI....No matter what city CSI is in, they seem to keep using the old songs of some band from England

Humm, Well,
Some guys have all the luck. And here I am still riding the back of the Turnip Truck! Well, I have moved up towards the middle by now. My Number 2 Grandson is here today. He Works Night Maintenance at the local Wal-Mart. From time to time he need a little money to get by. He is trying to write Rap Music. He played me a song he produced in someone's Studio. It is a bit muffled and the sound is about the level of the vocal. The guy who has the studio made the track in some computer program. So I gave him some constructive criticism. Write a hit!

Midnight,

That is a good question, can any of that be duplicated? I think not. I really don't think we are ever going to have artists, songs, etc. that will stay around that long. I think the attention span of the audiences move on too quickly now. The "theme song" analogy is a pretty good one because those live on in reruns. "Where Everybody Knows your Name" "Seinfield", "I'll Be There For You" (Friends), are around forever because they are on television all the time in reruns.

But do artists do that? Don't know. John Sebastion is probably still paid for "Welcome back Kotter" but how many of those will be in the future? I personally just don't think so.

Of course, having two pretty close friends who have had those kind of "forever songs" Chas Sandford "I Ain't Missin' You At All" and Jim Peterik "Eye of the Tiger", there are alsways some that seem to break through. It is just hard to see that happening in the future. Now, someone gets one hit and you see their biography in the stores for Christmas. Then they dissapear forever the next month.

I view all of this like professional athletes now. About 10-15 years to learn the skills, work the politics, build the allies, be in the right place at the right time, then about a three year career, on top of everything, and then replaced by the newest "next big thing" when the "new wears off of you."

Kind of like that old Entertainment maxim:

"WHO IS GARTH BROOKS?"
"GET ME SOMEONE LIKE GARTH BROOKS."
"FIND ME THE NEXT GARTH BROOKS."
WHO IS GARTH BROOKS?"

But we make for great questions in Trivia contests.

Ray, it is hard to use the word "HIT" and "RAP" in the same sentence. Talk about EVERYTHING sounding the same. LOL!

Heck Marc,
It is hard to use Rap and Music in the same sentence! But I read where the Ford Bronco and the Chevy Blazer are coming back! And to top that off LP Records are being offered in limited numbers for those that still want them! Next thing you know they will be putting standard transmissions in vehicles again! Every time they try to make bigger vehicles small ones keep popping up. The more things change the more they stay the same!

I've always thought having a song like "American Pie" might be a two-sided coin. It's a classic, but also something from which you can never escape. Sort of like Chubby Checker and "The Twist."

Hank Ballard wrote "The Twist," and I think his record was better than Chubby's.

Hey Marc,

(and all)

Hang with me here, because what I'm about to add here is the development of the theme song from "Cheers"....Which totally justifies MAB's consistent advice, which is something along the lines of "You have to build relationships"...

I'm glad, Marc, that you picked up my TV theme song references, especially "Cheers"...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Where_Everybody_Knows_Your_Name

.....

To quote MAB: You have to build relationships.

To quote BAW: Don't wait for success to find you, it doesn't know the way.

To explain my signature line from Sachel Paige:

Never run if you can walk.
Never walk if you can stand.
Never stand if you can sit.
Never look back, something might be gaining on you.

Marc, you forgot "If That's Garth Brooks I'm Not In" smile

...and what a great response by Mclean. When it came out way back when there was a big buzz about the question--heck I even sent away for an analysis given awy free to listeners of Chicago's WCFL, which I could actually get in Ontario late at night---so the twist is great...no no no not the song, the irony smile

Okay, Ya'll...

Here is a video that I first saw posted here on JPF a few years ago...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPjjZCO67WI

It is a "Lip-dub" by a whole city....Don McClean sings...

The city of Grand Rapids, Michigan, filmed it after Grand Rapids was voted as a "bad city" to live in...

All filmed in one "take"....

Enjoy....

Oh, and watch for the smokestakes blowing up fire...

Trust me on this...

If history is really a guide, when Elvis Presley first burst onto the scene many naysayers were saying that within a couple of years people would be scratching their head trying to figure out who that is. Obviously this was not the case as he is still very popular today, as is Sinatra. Most if not all of us won't be around to see if the names Taylor Swift or Brittany Spears ring a bell fifty years from now.
