Hey John,

If you haven't done the 30 "trial" yet, then hold off for a few days in order to best make use of it.

Do some due diligence first!

Suggestions:

For a start, set up a spread-sheet with the names of who you want to contact. Get your spread sheet organized with a place for names, e-mail, phone numbers and what they have worked on.

When you contact them, you want to make the e-mail, or phone call, seem "personalized".

It's a bit of work...So do the "work" first, and then use your 30 days to your best advantage.

I say this from a screenwriter's perspective. Music may be different, but I doubt it. Due diligence first, then use IMBd as a tool as a follow through, not as a jumping off point.

Hope that makes sense.

Will try to follow up in more detail soon.

Bottom line:

IMBd will give you contact information. That is all it is set up to do.

As a "member", your contact information and experience will also be available. Sadly, chances are that no one will seek you out. It's up to you(or me, or any "artist") to use it to our best advantage.

For me, as a screenwriter, I had two scripts that I was trying to pimp. One was a Big-Budget thriller. The other was a Low-Budget "Indie".

So I had two spreadsheets ready to go when I used my 30 day trial. I then sent out emails queries. 100 queries for each script.

Had 12 requests for the big budget. 20 for the low budget. One of the requests for the low-budget worked its way so high up the food chain that I actually dared to dream for a few days:-)

It was kewl!

So, get yer ducks in a row. IMBd is a contact tool. Use it properly:-)

Oh, and for what it's worth....Back in 2009, when I had two scripts produced by a VERY "Indie Production Company"...Some of the actors who were cast have their first IMBd "film credits" as being in one of my scripts...A couple of them have gone on to bigger and better things:-) We keep in touch via e-mails...But no matter how far they've traveled, I am on their IMBd page as the screenwriter of films that enabled them to be able to join IMBd as an actor with an actual
"Film Credit"...One of my few claims to fame:-)

Oh dear, I fear I ramble:-)

IMBd is kewl... But is only a tool....

Use it wisely:-)

Thanks Midnite! Do you post "beat sheets" on the website or complete scripts? My brother would be very cautious in posting either. Then again, without nothing on the site, we can expect nothing in return. I'll have to talk this over with my brother first. Thanks again!

Hey John,

Short answer? No! IMBd is for contact information and "produced" credits only!!!

It is not a "pitching" Site at all!! It is more of a "resume" Site, that allows folks to have "contact" info for networking, and pitching via the info gathered to those who might be interested.

You, have actual "credits" via your placements....So you can legitimately join and have all of your credits listed....As can Jody!

The 30 day trial is to be able to check it out, and as a screenwrighter, I gathered contact info to pitch my scripts via e-mails and phone calls. I didn't pitch on IMBd.

Midnite

P.S. Re: beat sheets, etc. that ship has left the harbor. One of my script writing "mentors" was recently advised to take his writing credits(3 years and over a dozen episodes) on the TV show M.A.S.H off of his resume because it made him seem "Too old"....He also wrote dozens of episodes for "Cheers", and several dozen episodes of Frazier. He also co-created the TV series called "Wings". AND, after the original Mary Tyler Moore show ended, he and his writing partner were assigned to create a follow-up show for her....

In other words....My mentor has some credentials...

Wanna know what he's doing now?

:-))))

I'm gonna send this from my iPhone in my driveway after a long day, and I have to get inside and feed my 190 pounds worth of dogs. Then I'll come back and post a link to "Ken Levines" blog:-)

Correct Bob, and many of my Film/TV credits are there. I do need to update a few - but most were added by either the show, the production, or my agent. Now that I have a pro account, I can add too. :-)

The purpose of the account is actually for musical things in mind. I'm sure it does help, if I were to contact some people, that I do have a lot of credits listed on there.

Film makers are not keen to talk to musicians untill that very last moment where they need music, and then it's in the post-production phase where editors or the cutter actually selects music. So if you want to know important people, make friends with the cutters!

Of course different strokes with different folks, if you get to do the main theme or soundtrack, you may find your piano at a film set in Alaska :-)

Good on you, John!!!...And Jody:-)

Please keep us informed of how IMBd works for you.

And I desperately feel the need to add, if a "composer" is an IMBdPro:

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, listen to Kolstad's advice! It is priceless beyond words!!!!

Kolstad used the term "cutter"/editor!!

Kolstad is SOOOOO RIGHT!!!!!!

If you want to do the "score" for a film, well, that's a whole other animal...Just ask Randy Newman...:-)

If you want to get a snippet or two, or three into a film, follow Kolstad's advice....

I say this as someone who has sat in with cutters/editors on "Indie Films" for 32 hours straight...AFTER they have already spent three nearly sleepless weeks piecing a film together. And ALL they want, after those three sleepless weeks, is to find ONE 30 Second Snippet of a Song for One Single Scene!!

And my experience is with "Indie" Films that will never make a dime...We did it and have NO REGRETS!!!!....:-)

But how do ya think an editor/cutter on a Major Motion Picture might feel at 11:59 p.m. when he/she has a multi-million$$$ film "edit" due the next day with a 30 second song snippet missing?

The pressure isn't on the songwriter/content provider. We already expect that we won't make more than a few pennies.

The pressure is on the editor/cutter...

Oh, dear, I fear I rambled again, didn't I?

GO FOR IT!!!!

But take it seriously:-)

Not rambling at all Midnite. I'm holding on to all your advice. And yeah, my goal is going for the complete film score. Maybe dreaming, but then again, that's what I do best. Dreaming. grin

Hey JLS...

Leave "dreaming" for those who are sleeping...

Personally, I'm tired of waking up at 3:00 a.m. having to pee, and then wondering, what did I NOT do yesterday that I would like to do better tomorrow?

May your Panera be Forever "Fresh".

Once to pee.

Once to let the dogs out.

Once to nudge the wife to adjust her snoring.

Once to let the cat back in...

Ok, I'll fess up..

...I might sneak in an extra pee or two before I get up and drive a hundred or so miles for my day job "contract" work...

But tween you & me, JLS???...The pee time is very special!! Almost as special as seeking out that little yellow button:-)

Wouldn't you agree:-)
