I hear this in an Americana vein. As always your comments/suggestions are welcome and appreciated.
God Willing and the River Don't Rise
The banks are overflowin' And the levee's givin' way Gotta get to higher ground Before we get swept away
Board up the doors and windows And take only what you need We'll ride this storm out Wait 'til the waters recede
Chorus Come hell as high water Three straight days of rain Prayin' we'll see the sun shine God willing and the river don't rise again
The river's rage rushed in with The force of a hurricane And when the waters were gone Mem'ries were all that remained
Chorus
Bridge I'm standin' in what's left of my home Ev'rything I worked for is gone The only thing left to do is decide Do I rebuild or just move on?
Chorus

Some strong lines, and they fit together well.

I hear the arrangement similar to a song by the Band.

Will not know which way this will go until it gets recorded. Reminds me very of much of the Johnny Cash classic "Five Feet High and Rising". Parts of the Caribbean are experiencing this right now.

Thanks for checking this out. Any mention of Johnny Cash when talking about one of my songs is humbling to say the least.

Sounds as if your home state received some of the remnants of Hurricane Matthew. Was that the inspiration? Or something else? Perhaps a reading of your state's classic Johnstown flood of many years back?

Hi, rpirone, I think it's getting there. Topical too. My suggestion would be to get the chorus to flow easier from the verses and bridge:
Chorus Come hell or high water After three straight days of rain We pray we'll see the sun shine God willing (pause) and the river don't rise again
Good stuff. Vic

Actually it was a reaction to the number of floods that have been occurring lately. That and I have been listening to the Band over the last few weeks.

Vic:
I like your take on it. I also envisioned a pause between "God willing" and the rest of the line.
Thanks Rich

The weather has been worse than ever this year! Floods, Snowstorms and heinous cold. And it is predicted to get worse in the next few years.

It's a good lyric and certainly topical as the weather of the world is showing who is the boss. good work friend.
