This is a novelty song that I just want to get done, I hate working on it but I can’t help myself… lol
This is my 2nd full production. I normally just do demos.

https://www.reverbnation.com/passivedrift

It's Not my style.
I wrote it in (2011 Copyright) (Recording 2016 Copyright) “Passive Drift Productions”
This is MIX2
Any advice would be cool….

Thank you!
Dave

Hi Dave,
Cool punk vibe, it rocks allright!
I like the gtr riffs you've got going.

What is happening for me, though, is that the electric guitar is stepping over the vocal, and it becomes monotome because the drums doesn't change up.

So, what you can do is to pull out the electric lead gtr in the verses, and pull the bass more up in the mix. Then slowly pull up the gtr in the chorus, untill it sits in a place where it is audible at the same time as the vocal is clear. Maybe you can pull a bar out of the drums right before the chorus, so it stops before and then starts. That might be enough to change the drums up a bit and add variety.

I think those rearrangements will make the song much more effective and fun to listen to.

All the best, and tnx for your comment on Rewrite the Future!

The song has the potential to be real burner.

Your mix is drums and vocal friendly but the guitars need to be MUCH bigger. The bass needs to lock into the percussion track, especially the kick. Right now, it just seems absent.

I would double track that guitar part and have it span the soundfield from left to right since there is not much else going on harmonically in that frequency space. You might want to consider adding another guitar part as well. For this type of song, you want the guitar to be big and raw, and right now it sounds compressed and underwater. If you have double-tracked guitar left and right, and the vocal in the center, you should be able to get it sounding big without stepping on the vocal too much.

I'd be interested in hearing an updated mix when you decide to update the tune.

Regards,
TC

If it has strings I will find a way to play it!

It seems to be constantly the same with no dynamics and no stereo spread. A song should have a beginning, a middle, and an end, and build as it unfolds. What about some tremolo guitar chords panned all the way left in verse 2? How about dropping the drums out at some key point for a couple of beats or measures? How about some vocal harmonies on the chorus maybe the second time through? Etc. etc. etc. You want the listener to be curious about what's coming next so they don't change stations!

Thank you all too much.

A lot to do. smile

Colin, about dynamics within the song. I don't really understand. Are you saying to add like more texture types (as I would say) without having to rerecord everything and that would work? hum, I will need to look into song dynamics.

I'm thinking I my just rerecord everything at this point anyway using the advice from all you folks. smile

Thank you all!
Dave

Hello to all, just had a question...
I kind of think that this is a rock song.
But people keep telling me its a punkish type song.
Not that it's a problem at all, it's not smile
But what makes it a punk song?

Dave,

First of all, I would lose the background lead guitar part in the first verse. Then I would bring it in on the second verse but not let it conflict with the vocals...trim it so that is only noticeable when the singer pauses and then get rid of it or soften it while he sings. Then let everything blast away on the chorus. Then drop it out again for the next verse and so on. Personally I would record another different guitar sound/part and bring it in after the first chorus and let the first one fade away. Then towards the end of the song, build up to where both guitars are blazing maybe harmonizing with each other). Look for ways to make each verse/chorus sound different from the previous one without changing the lyrics or melody. Maybe on the last chorus, stop all the instruments except a rhythm guitar for the first line, and then bring them back in for the rest of the song.

Just some ideas - do it however you want!
