Does anyone know how much it cost to chlorinate a gallon of water. Most cities and towns chlorinate their water supply, I was wondering how much it cost to do that. I told you it was and odd question.

well I can't tell you what the cities would pay (since they would buy chlorine in bulk) But we use a "bleach solution to spray down our table at the farmer's market... and even that would be a lot stronger than the amount of chlorine in drinking water.... sooo I can buy around a gallon of chlorine bleach for under $3.00... and you would only need a few drops...if that much.. for a gallon of drinking water.... so... relatively speaking.... it's a very inexpensive process...pennies per gallon...at most
hope that helps

Well, It seems I read one time where to make drinking water safe to drink if it was suspect is 6 drops of bleach added. Not sure but you may find an answer somewhere on the Net. That is 6 drops of bleach per gallon.

Thanks for reply. It must be cheap per gallon because people water their lawns and wash their cars and towns don't complain unless their water supply is running low. I found one place on the net where they were chlorinating a water supply in a third world town or village and they said it cost 0.01 cents a liter. I would guess large town could cost even less because they would buy chlorine in bulk, not in bottles like this village was.

A little research says the cost in a large plant is about $.00007 per gallon. The concentration in water is tiny but it's all that's needed to kill the bacteria.

Thank you Colin, that is more like it. I knew the cost must be small but I couldn't find it even though I did a net search. I guess I didn't ask the question right when searching. Thanks again.
