Here's another relic of mine.. my take on a marriage song, I guess, but I tried to keep the lyric open to fit other occasions also.

I did the track and the placeholder vocals. Wonder where to go with the vocals, male/ female? Is this pitchable for artists as is, you'd think?

[track removed, thanks all]

Happy Tears
©2012 M.Kolstad

I was stumbling back a step
When I turned my head
I let out my breath
Once I saw you there

Iíve been buckling, trembling
Calling out your name
Iíve been shaking, struggling
Wanting to be held

Now I bite my lip
Just canít resist anymore
I let my jumbled thoughts fall
Throw myself into your arms
And cry my happy tears
I cry my happy tears for you

Iím smiling bigger than life
Canít believe youíre all mine
Itís like I can fly
From my mind to the outside

Iíve been fighting so long
With my heart in my palm
Iíve been weak Iíve been strong
Bowed my head to hold on

Now I bite my lip
Just canít resist anymore
I let my jumbled thoughts fall
Throw myself into your arms
And cry my happy tears
I cry my happy tears for you

The hard times are over
Your love is all I need (repeated)

Yeah, I bite my lip
Just canít resist anymore
I let my jumbled thoughts fall
Throw myself into your arms
And cry my happy tears
I cry my happy tears
My happy tears, all for you

Hi Magne,

This is very beautiful. There's a bit of McCartney in your mid-range--that easy going kind of singing that's so damn pretty sounding.

The lyric is a gem as well. "buckling, trembling..shaking, struggling" --you are really getting a redemptive form of love across with your words. To me, it's in the Soul tradition of getting something across with feeling, and your words, taken as a whole express that feeling quite well.

I like the "harder" more soulful singing you do late, as well--it's also more vulnerable..tears are falling here, in this "hard times are over" place, for me..this is like McCartney giving way to Lennon. This song really benefits from the "release" that this part brings. I hear a small army of Black Gospel singers behind you there.

It's a solid production and arrangement, with the rhythm section up front and driving this. A few words get swallowed up by the volume elsewhere, but it wasn't distracting.

This song touches my heart. Just plain ol' five star beautiful work, Magne. I hope you are still producing--you are an amazing talent, and I love your work. smile

Mike

So good to hear you again, Magne! And you're still sounding great. Sweet theme wrapped up in a sincere but not sappy musical production. Only thing I'd change is the vocal effect in the bridge as it's more a distraction than anything else. Well done and hope you stick around for a while.

Ricki

I would not change a thing... if you plan to "pitch it" Magne.

The "artist" will request any changes to suit his/her style... but your vocal "sells" the song as far as my ears are concerned.

I enjoyed everything about it. Well done. ----Dave

Appreciate that, Mike. It lands on a dry spot. I did start songwriting to get redemption for some personal losses, but that faded and so did my efforts. So now I have to rediscover music without being driven by that.

For this song, I did work with a new method of songwriting called "object writing" for this. They do it at Berklee, and I've taken a liking to it. Basically it's about working with the senses, but there's a full process to walk through, which I like a lot.

Ricki & Dave,
Thanks guys!
I may find a singer, and adjust some details in the mix. I guess the vocal fx be one. Drums and overall balances as well.
Prolly wont pitch to artists, but try to get the song into film/tv. It's that kind of tune, I think.

Hi Kolstad

LTNS-My fault...I have been busy trying to get myself killed-lol...I think I managed to shoot to the top of enemies lists for the NRA/Several Militia movements/Random Nuts with guns etc etc as I fought the good fight for gun control in America. But anyway I digress as usual...To me your song has a very Dylanesque feel to it-which is good but it is too long...I dont know about European radio......But in America 3:25 seems to be as much time as they like to give most songs anymore-so they can ram in more commercials...Good song but I assume you have some commercial aspirations for it....Excuse me if I am wrong about that........

Tnx Tom, you are right of course, but not really for radio. 3min, positive, uptempo, chorus lift ect is not for me. A machine does that better. But Dylanesque feel sounds great, I'll grab that :-)

Just to add my five pence worth.
This is my type of song. Mike mentioned Paul McCartney which is true. I also heard Tom Petty in this.

My only sugg. would be to vary the drum beat a little.
Maybe just the kick and hat for a verse or two and then snare on the build and chorus.

Vic

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.
