I have a bass (Samick). All I have to record with is a dj mixer and no pre-amp, can not get the power I would like not to overpower, or not have enough power with everything else. But I am looking for advice with the bass before I look at pre-amps. But a pre-amp seems inevitable. What would be the best basic pre-amp?

Thanks Colin, I will look in to that.
I have used a dj mixer and have used .wav from a stereo unit, which is pretty hard on that equipment.
Members here have stirred me right on equipment more than once.

Not sure what you are seeking. A Condenser Microphone needs a Pre Amp to function properly. A Dynamic Microphone does not need any extra amplification to work as it has enough output as is. A main Amplifier needs about 1 Volt Peak to Peak input to drive it to full output. A condenser will need a pre amp. Most of the time the pre amp will come with the microphone.
A nice budget recording unit is the Tascam DP-006. It has everything built in and a USB output you can use to send the recording to a Computer. If your computer has a CD burner you can send it to a disc.
Of course it cannot probably use any recording software etc.

I don't go on to the net as much as what I have had at hand. Much of what I have done on recordings and the synth has been more analog.
I have used tascam before as a mixer and also to serve as an effects pedal. I have been using a dj mixer and reverb units for my online recordings thus far. But the Tascam DP-006 might do the trick. Especially since I have a computer now that has the ghs to handle that.
Thanks for the input, Matt

If you have a computer, you should go for an audio interface to record with. Audio interfaces are used to take signals from mics and instruments and convert those signals to digital formats so you can mange them in a recording programme (daw) on the computer. Audio interfaces have built in preamps in them, and they are fine for getting enough levels for bass. You can also record your synth with an audio interface. If you find that the bass is recorded lower than the rest, turn down the synth tracks, so the tracks are at the same level, and go from there. There are lots of good options here's a link http://www.musicradar.com/news/tech/13-of-the-best-budget-usb-audio-interfaces-570850

I notice on that link that there is a Roland with that. I have a bit of an affinity with Genesis and Peter Banks, even though much of their music was before the time I became interested in recording.
I am leaning towards quality, even if I have to pay a bit more for that. I am torn between the Roland and Tascam interface, outside of other suggestions.
Lots of great info on here. Much appreciated!
Matt

I don't know your budget but a well known bassist had to use a rack mount preamp on his last tour and he used a Tech21 bass preamp and he was surprisingly impressed.... especially for around 300- 350

Thanks Sue. That price sounds from what I have looked at to be about right. I am in a media productions class too and the instructor emphasizes bang for the buck. It is the deciding part, and I am laying out these options to my instructor, who has worked for decades in radio. I guess it comes down to what the individual is looking for. I have had a good time navigating these options.
