Two years (I think) and a few months ago, I produced the Cuppa Joe CD, a “pre-posthumous tribute” album of various artists covering some of my songs. After that came out, some folks expressed interest in doing it again, and I said, “We’ll see.” I guess I’m ready to do it again, if enough people are interested. I think I have the time and the resources now to pull it off.
Here’s the deal. I have the New Joe Songbook finished, and converted to a *.pdf file; it’s got lyrics and chords to just about all the songs up through the end of 2015. I can e-mail you a copy, and you can pick from it any song you want. Record the song, and send me an *.mp3 file. That’s what I’ll use for the CD.
I will do the mastering and make the CDs or have them made. Everyone who participates will get ten (10) CDs to do with what you will—sell, give away, yada yada. Last time around, I wanted photos from everybody, and I want that this time, too; I said I didn’t care if it was a photo of you, and some people sent me photos that weren’t of themselves, and it was fine. I want short (one paragraph) bios, too. I will put that stuff on an insert that’ll go in every CD.
What would we call this? A Second Cuppa Joe? I have no idea. Last time, it was Jane Dunkin, who was one of the contributors to the album, who came up with the title, and also did the cover and label art.
A few rules (I hate rules, so there’s only a few). (1) If you did it last time, of course you can do it again. It’d be nice if you could do a different song. (2) There will be room for a maximum of 16 tracks of a maximum of 4-1/2 minutes in length. That’s what will fit on your standard CD-R. So basically the first 16 get it. And I would like to have at least 11 tracks, because if there’s less, it doesn’t feel like a “real” CD. (3) I don’t want two recordings of the same song, so whoever calls dibs on a song first gets it.
And of course, you should feel free to put your own “spin” on the songs. That’s one of the things that makes the exercise fun. The Cuppa Joe album included (among other things) a blues rendition of “Armadillo on the Interstate,” an electronica version of “When I Jump Off the Cliff I’ll Think of You,” a klezmerish rendition of “21 Steamer Drive”—and “Anatole the (Welsh) Vole” was unforgettable. You can do whatever you want. Remember, I can’t sing, and I can’t play guitar that good—why would you want to imitate me? Do your own thing with it.
Deadlines? I recall I had set deadlines last time around, and ended up missing every one of them. Let’s see how many (if any) people are interested first. Then, if you have deadlines we need to worry about, tell me. I bet I can work around most of them.
There you have it. If you’re interested, e-mail me or message me, and I’ll send you the Songbook. Let me know what you want to do. And thanks in advance for your interest.
Joe

This sounds like a blast. Did you get many takers yet? I'll talk to the boys next week and see what they say. Down with the flu this week.

I have heard from 19 thus far. Only 5 have picked out songs yet, though. No idea how much participation I'll actually get. Give me your email and I'll send you the Songbook.
