Another song with the title of a Ray Bradbury work - in this case a collection. I'm well aware of the fact that this song has a structure nowhere near that of current popular songs. No matter - I did it just for me. October Country is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nvKmTiGk6gI'll stick the lyric below. Just sharing.... Thanks, Scott October Country © 2016 by SW Campbell I’m driving through the orange groves, a song is in my mind She laughed and sang it as I tapped the wheel keeping time I never heard that song again, never sang it anyhow Yet in October Country, it’s playing for me now There’s migrants picking berries as dust blows over the field My throat was parched, my lips were chapped, my mind would not be stilled She poured for me cool water with a smile born of grace Now in October Country, that kindness left a trace There’s an old abandoned houseboat back in the willow trees I battened down the hatches as she zippered her valise She shouted verses as the hail added its refrain Now in October Country, the skies are clear of rain A bullet ridden billboard reminds me Jesus Lives She offered me the sweetest kiss, one even He’d forgive I stumbled when she wondered if I’d be born again Now in October Country, I think nine times, maybe ten Young girl and boy are playing, sliding down a pile of dirt She chided me for digging, guess she thought my feelings hurt For when I did strike water, she kissed my frown away Now in October Country, Her ghost is still at play The crops give way to concrete as I cross the interstate I play her message in my mind, she teases, “Don’t be late” Well either Father Time is sleeping or his clock’s in disrepair For I’m in October Country but spring is in the air I’m in October Country but spring is in the air

I haven't been here much the last few months but I had a feeling you'd post this here, just as I first saw and heard it on Facebook. Glad I did. As I mentioned before, the imagery is wonderfully cinematic all the way through. I especially like this verse...
"A bullet ridden billboard reminds me Jesus Lives She offered me the sweetest kiss, one even He’d forgive I stumbled when she wondered if I’d be born again Now in October Country, I think nine times, maybe ten"
A lot of Dylan's new works have the same all verse format and it works because the imagery captures the imagination, in this case even without the video to help it along.
Can't wait to meet you in person Sunday and finally shake your hand, Scotty. That will be one of this year's highlights for me.
Steve

Hello Scott,
You need to drop in more often, this is very nicely done. I think it's always refreshing to do something just because YOU like it.

You are slaying me -- I still have not wandered into the music video world with my December PowerDirector purchase. I need to start off with an easy one, but I sort of like doing too much (ha, ha).
Wonderful video and the lyrics are, as usual, super! That is some great story telling!!!

A beautiful write. Very nice recording. And a good video - I don't generally watch videos, but yours kept my attention... simple, but interesting...

Well, we are certainly a couple of folks who could care less about structure and/or commercial appeal. Besides this format is best IMO for presenting your great imagery.
We like the write, the recording and the vid adds to the feel but takes nothing away.
Enjoyed it!

Hi Scott, I just love this couplet: A bullet ridden billboard reminds me Jesus Lives She offered me the sweetest kiss, one even He’d forgive --that's just most excellent. Your recent compositions are this cool hybrid to me--the prosody and vocal phrasing and melody are kind of trad Irish in feel, but the chords get deceptive and baroque..like Rubber Soul/Revolver era Beatles, but with a definite Irish barroom feel in the lilt of the vocal melody. And it's a real nice style, and it serves this great lyric that's also a nice hybrid that reminds me of road movies and ("Girl From the North Country" era) Dylan and Steinbeck. Just a beautiful, elegant song and a nice production/arrangement as well. Mike

This is great, Scott. Your imagery brings the story to life and your chord changes keep the level of interest high throughout all 6 verses. Nicely done video as well. Thanks for sharing your art.

Scott,
I've always enjoyed your music. This one Just might be my favorite. You painted such wonderful imagery and the video brought it all to life in a big way. Your production has always impressed. Have you added Vedic skills to your resume or did you have this done professionally? Either way, you should be quit proud of this one. Great stuff!

Shakespeare's Skull Could be Stolen..... http://www.soundclick.com/bands/0/calvinstewart Thanks, Pal. It's become quite obvious to me through my work that attention spans are shrinking. So I often find myself writing to keep things moving. Not this time though. Yeah, sometimes you gotta do something for yourself. Scott

Tammy Thanks, Tammy. This project is starting to grab my attention so maybe I'll pick up the pace a little. The video software is called Power Director. It has a bit of a learning curve but would not be hard to learn for anyone who records their own music. You can get started using the free version of Microsoft moviemaker though. It would allow you to use both video and stills - just not on the screen at the same time. But it would allow you to marry your musical and photographic interests. Scott

This is the first time I consciously considered prosody in a composition - most times it is unconscious. Originally this had a standard folk chord sequence. But I wanted something to really set apart the first two lines which separate an observation from a memory. So I played around until I found a sequence that I never used before but did what I wanted: Am, C, Ab, Bb, Eb, G. That felt really cool to me. Scott

Ricki Thanks Ricki. I like the chord changes too - just thought that hearing them six times might be asking too much of the listener. Honestly, I thought it likely that no one would like this. Cool to be wrong Scott

Tom Thanks, Tom. I started in video about a year ago. Am still learning a lot, but I seem to enjoy being on the steep end of the learning curve. Figuring out how to shoot in the car without a camera operator was the big challenge for this one. Scott

Hey Scott,
Enjoyed this even more hearing here on JPF. This is just one of those songs that cause you to fall into a relaxed gaze where you almost forget where you really are. It has a melancholy feel for sure, yet uplifting at the same time. I think you have demonstrated that skill with much of your songwriting--and there in lies "one" aspect of your talent and music artistry.
Melody/arrangement/production/performance -- Well done IMO.

Dave Thanks, Dave. Thought I'd weaned myself from this kinda thing (six verses, no bridge, break or chorus) but I guess I let my guard down. Glad it had some movement to it anyway. Scott

Loved it Scott. The melody was plenty interesting enough to handle just verses. Dense recording but nice and clean. Like your strat. In the credits you mention Santa Cruz to King City. John Stienbeck country. Were you here in California? I thought you were a Florida person. Tom

Enjoyed this one and admire your bravery doing the video thing. I suspect this well written song could take on a different vibe altogether with more orchestration but it works well the way you performed it. Too many good lines to credit. Enjoyed. ----Dave

hi Scott...it took me so long yesterday to remember how to post my new song on Soundclick that I was getting called for dinner before I could post a response to this gem. really nice, with a video, too! I wouldn't dismiss the mainstream appeal of this, either. if you have some Nashville contacts, pitch it to 'em.

Nice video. Well done. Thanks, Colin. One of his stories reminded me of what happens in one of the verses. Other than that and the title, no connection. But in a general sense, his imagery is a source of inspiration. Scott

Oh yippie a song from one of the JPF Masters - my favorite verses are the born again and the striking water - you really put some work into making that video - cheers to your camera person -- love the mystery of the song it's the type of writing you can meditate on and I enjoyed it and your presentation immensely -- Best wishes --Pete
