I normally have a Tascam US 144 that I use to record my audio files for songwriting. This machine is driving me crazy!! I noticed online that there are many online recording studios. Has anyone used any of these? I'm not looking to record my demo, just rough track to send out for a demo. I hear some people just use their phones. What does everyone use? I'm ready to throw this Tascam OUT THE WINDOW. Ugh!! There's got to be an easier way!

hey Donna, there are quite a few small pocket recorders i've seen at musician friend and guitar center.Seems it would do the trick for what you mentioned.

Well,
Nothing is ever easy, is it. Back in 1995 I was using an old Reel to Reel recorder to record my demos and then copy them to a cassette thru a Receiver. However the recording part of the reel to reel just died one day. SO, I bought a Tascam Porta O3 Mk 11 cassette recorder I still use. I now copy the tape to CD where I can copy back to a CD for submissions, etc. using a CD Stand Alone CD Recorder.

If there is a Music Store close by you might visit them to see what they have that will fit your needs.

What problems are you having with it, Donna?

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

I use a Zoom hand held recorder and I love it. This is the one I bought several years ago.

https://reverb.com/item/2137514-zoo...a=1&gclid=CIi-4_zTwcwCFQEJaQodp6kH8Q

They have newer models now, probably more bells and whistles. I don't know half of what mine can do but I know enough to get a recording that works for critiquing and having demos made.

The only problem I have with it is every year the digital readout gets smaller and now I need reading glasses to see it! grin

Hi Donna:

To answer your question about on-line recording studios. No, I have never used one. Sounds like a good way to lose money and control of your project... but they may be perfectly legit.

I use a Boss BR-864 Digital Recorder as my "workhorse" but it is only one component in the process. Is it perfect? No, but it is adequate... because I don't do multi-track recording. All my recordings are "live."

Good luck in finding exactly the right machine to suit your needs.

----Dave

Well,
Upon examining many of the offerings for the songwriter it appears most of those recorders have enough knobs, buttons, bells and whistles to choke a horse! It appears most of them now record to an SD Card rather than a CD or tape. After you record a track or tracks you need a place or way to put it so you can access it and copy it for a submission. Maybe you can copy it to your computer where you can put it on a CD if you are sending it out for a request for material or a better demo. My setup allows me to copy my tracks to a CD where I have to make a label in another program and label what is on the CD. It all takes work. From there I can copy the tracks back to another CD for a submission unless they want an E-Mail sent of which leaves me out. Many people wanting a submission are inherently lazy and don't want to do any work except to listen to what you send over the Net.

I found a Recorder that may serve your need for recording scratch tracks.A Tascam DP-006 at Musician's Friend. $116.89. Don't have one. Good luck.

To just record a rough take of your song you can really just use your phone or do it right on your computer with a mic and through Audacity or Garageband. That's how most songwriters record their rough tapes for us to work off. Just don't send out those rough recordings to serious music publishers and expect an answer.

The first question I would ask is if you are just recording one track (mono or stereo) or if you are building up several tracks of instruments and vocals. For one track, a portable handheld recorder like the Tascam or Zoom mentioned above is all you need or the phone app. For multi tracks, you should be able to use the interface that you have and work with it in Audacity (free and adequate) or Reaper (inexpensive and complete but complicated).

By the way, you can record multiple tracks with the Zoom as well.

Thank you for your responses. I tossed the Tascam out and all I'm using now is my phone or the recording app on laptop. That then goes to be demoed. BTW, using http://www.magicshackproductions.com/ for demos and love them. Here's my new song: https://youtu.be/xqOzsWl5j_4

I have a Tascam http://www.zzounds.com/item--TASDP01FX that works well and easily transfers a wave file to my computer where I can transform it into an MP3

But there are also a lot of on line collaboration sites springing up ... just Google...on line music collaboration....and you'll find them

Personally, I would look at some of the folks here like Michael Zaneski, Floyd Jane, "Vicarn" etc

If writing ever becomes work I think I'm going to have to stop
