Mark,

Thanks for sharing these beautiful memories. The extent of his community..the extent of his philanthropy. I had no idea, and love the man even more knowing these things.

Mike

I know plenty of you thought he was just another ridiculous pop star, and plenty others recognized not only his talents but his genius. By now, hopefully everyone has read enough news articles to realize the extent of his impact, and his philanthropy. This man helped so many people.

Here in Minneapolis we lost a good friend and neighbor. He shares our memories and grew up watching the same local shows. He was three years older than me and lived a school away from where I came from. I keep thinking about how he watched Lunch With Casey on channel 11 like we all did here, we late-phase baby boomers in Minneapolis. We all have Prince stories. He STAYED here after becoming a star, and became a superstar after making Purple Rain here in town, with hundreds of us recruited as extras. I was out of town when that went down but some of my best friends have close-ups in those First Avenue scenes. He did random pop-up concerts all the time, and when he came, closing time did not apply. Just last month, some close friends were doing a Ray Charles tribute at an intimate dinner theater in Chanhassen. I was SO STUPID to have missed that...I came so close to buying tickets, and felt guilty beforehand for not supporting their one-time show, which I knew was going to be killer. But I never expected Prince to go. Prince not only showed up to catch the little show run by excellent but not-exactly-famous local musicians, but he came onstage without warning and ripped out a tasty guitar solo before leaving just as quickly and quietly. My friends are forever blessed by that memory, to have happened so soon before he passed.

I had a conversation with him at Sinead O'Connor's first concert at First Avenue. He was walking by as I was talking to a friend, and when I looked up and saw him he said "hi." My reply to him was this: "Hi." I'd tell you more, but he kept walking. He was dressed in pale jade silk and surrounded by large beasts.

In this town we all love Prince. He has done so much for the community, for local musicians, for the local economy, for local charities. I remember when my band played at Glam Slam we kept scanning the balcony, just in case, just in case... He was always attending concerts, and I remember him having a blast at a recent Janelle Monae concert. He just sat with everyone else in the balcony, whooping and pointing his jeweled cane at Janelle, who put on an ESPECIALLY fantastic concert knowing he was there for the whole thing. She made everyone "get low, get low" until we were all down on our knees...and THEN she crowdsurfed us, LOL. Prince loved it.

He was very real to us, not just someone on a screen. I joined the locals Thursday night in front of First Avenue, thousands and thousands of us. A lot of tears and smiles and singing, a diverse crowd being very good to each other, sharing stories. It was spine tingling to all sing "Purple Rain" together, thousands whooping out the final "woo hoo hoo hoos" at the end.

To those of you saddened more than you expected by his death, I feel you. This one is hard. And to those of you who don't care one whit about his life or death, may your disconnection from human emotion not compel you to insult those who feel them.

I didn't get to know Prince, but I did get to know many of his band members (some who were JPF members and part of our local Chapter in Minneapolis at one time such as Dr. Fink) as well as his first keyboardist who preceded the era of the Revolution (but who knew all of them well) Gayle Chapman who was a JPF member and who once did a Rooftop concert with me and 4 other members in Boise, ID, but that was a long time ago.

Prince was among the most talented musicians in the 20th/21st century being about to play the widest array of instruments (which SOME others can do, but not many) but also sing and become a massive pop star AND songwriters AND producer AND talent discoverer and nurturer forming a combination never before even remotely approached in commercial music history. I would say he likely had more diverse talent than any other artist any of us will ever know or be aware of in our lives regardless of whether you hate his music or not. A style is a style, if you can't recognize that there are terrifically talented people making music that you simply don't care for then the problem and lack of intellectual awareness is yours and no one else's. I've been privileged to become informed by my work about genres I still don't care for, but now understand how much talent you must have to succeed. And I can identify really good from so-so in my least favorite genres easily and appreciate a job well done even when it isn't my cup of tea. That is a learned talent, which required decades of listening live and to recordings made by all types and levels of music makers. Prince was among the best ever in a wide array of disciplines. To have ALL that talent AND to be a good guy who did right by the little guys more often than most in his range of success, is even more impressive. He wasn't perfect and sadly among his weaknesses I fear that a hip surgery led to addiction and then his death because of it by one cause or another. It is a story that touches all people of all backgrounds and often with the same ugly results. But it doesn't take away from his talents.

He left an estimated 20K fully produced unreleased songs, countless other album and film projects (he had a full film studio) and documentary and other creative projects just poured out of the guy. I hope we get to hear some of it but I wouldn't be surprised if it's all destroyed or kept hidden from the public forever. That was part of his mystique.

Mark, I read your tribute and it was beautiful. I am a Prince fan and what you wrote just reinforces my feelings for him and his music.
Thanks for the wonderfully-put sentiments.

Thanks Michael and PopTodd.

Brian, I just heard on the local news last night that Bremer Bank, newly appointed trustee of the estate, just drilled into that legendary vault because only Prince knew the combination!

If most of the accounts are true and not myth, then I expect we may yet hear our favorite Prince song that we've never heard before. Prince claimed that he didn't always give his best to the record companies and that there are several fully finished tracks complete with music videos that are of the highest caliber. I sure hope so.

And I'm not sure if my Facebook post will show up here, but this is a video I took from the crowd while we were all singing Purple Rain on the night of the day he died. Hope it shows up for everyone.

My bad, Mark...

I have already "cut & pasted" your initial tribute on JPF to my Facebook page....Should've asked permission first...And now I've gone and posted the "Surprise Performance" link....

I don't really do much on Facebook unless something strikes me as important, and so only a handful of folks notice, but they are a very steady handful....

The handful of them are very grateful to Mark Kaufman for giving them something beyond "The cookie cutter headlines"...

I will now track you down on Facebook and send you a "friend" request so that you can see how much appreciation your words have brought to a handful of folks you've never met.

Midnite...P.S..."Robert Gustafson"...

I really would never mind at all about sharing ANYTHING I've done. Feel free.

Thanks!

Purple Rain sung by The Boss! My goodness..that was wonderful. I'm playing catch-up with some of these. I hear SNL did a whole tribute show.

Mark, wish I was there, singing "Purple Rain" with you all. That was very cathartic to watch. Must've been a hundred times that, being there in person.

I told Midnite recently how I feel (real, local) community slipping away, in this Internet Age. With Prince's death, I'm feeling this even more so. He reached folks globally with and through his music, certainly, but reached them locally and more personally, and perhaps just as impact-fully--with his sense of community. I've never been witness to this, before..when practically a whole State considered an artist "family." But it's a beautiful, moving thing to now be aware of and understand.

Mike

Here is a better version--

Prince Musicology special Mtv 2004 mpg
https://youtu.be/PGeCbTTaFQQ
Sweet Thang starts at 17:10 with the crowd singing and Prince playing the guitar. Give the whole video a view it shows you what a musical genius PRINCE was. Thanks for the links.

Oh yes this was fantastic too:
What it sounds like when 1,000 high school choir students pay tribute to Prince

They're singing "Purple Rain" in the karaoke bars. I recogize it as being a great song.

HI

He was a Music ICON and now that he has died all this is coming out now. I think its great. I had no idea he gave away so much money and music.

MSNBC did a special on him
https://youtu.be/UONonZu5uGk part 2

Great Report

Thanks
RL

Just Plain Quotes
"A lot of people will tell you that preparation is what will make you successful. But I think that people misunderstand exactly what that means sometimes. The type of preparation you need most is the kind that allows you to instantly seize an opportunity, change your course based on a momentary circumstance, and grab hold of the totally unexpected when it happens, and allow it to take you for the ride of your life! That is the kind of preparation that can lead to the most enjoyable type of success." -Brian Austin Whitney
