Such an immense talent in such a small body. Seems that he's had some weird physical symptoms lately. Guess it'll be a while 'fore we find out.

I agree with BC, can we stop the death-march now????

Godspeed!

How can this be? Wow. So sad. Life is short.

A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write,
if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. What a man can be,
he must be. -- Abraham Maslow, American Psychologist

Ahhh dang, another one of the greats has gone to join Elvis.

What a writer, performer and showman !

I think he has launched many more careers than his own.

After doing his one off "Piano and Microphone" gig at Paisley Park, he then came to Oz to perform at the Sydney Opera House, and then on a to more small and selected gigs. I'm sorry I missed it, apparently the reviews were stunning, as was his performance.

"I thought I would never be able to play like my dad," he said. "And he never missed an opportunity to remind me of it." - Rolling Stone

Classed as a "non" piano player, and as his Dad was a brilliant jazz pianist, he just blitzed it. Perhaps he had something to say personally, we'll never know.

Reviews .....

and social media....

Don't RIP buddy, kick up a storm wherever you may be.

cheers, niteshift

Holy What if,
Back when Lady Di died I started a song, WILL ANYONE REMEMBER ME. So far I have never finished it. So, when I die will anyone remember me?

And if that wasn't bad enough it appears the banana is having problems with a bad fungus that hasn't been controlled. And further bad news the orange is having bad problems of it's own.

And if that isn't enough Obama Care, the total un-affordable act has the premiums going up again next year! As if anyone can afford it now. Better hide your money boys, if you have any!

He,He,
Sorry Midnite. Nobody likes bad news, but get used to it! You can stick your head in the sand. Maybe all those bad things will go away. Or not. And, will anyone remember me?

You know I was pondering why people like Michael Jackson, Jerry Garcia, of the Grateful Dead lose touch with reality when they get filthy rich. Elvis lost it and maybe Prince did also.

Such sad news. Regardless of the cause of death, which has been bandied about over the last 48 hours or so, it doesn't diminish the loss to the music community. I'm a fan.

Tiny anecdote: Back in the day before this whole Internet business, I once camped out overnight with friends to buy actual tickets to his concert from Ticketron. We were sitting pretty, first in line. Sadly, by the time the gate opened at 9:00 am, the show was already sold out; seems a couple of other outlets, fearing a rampage of crazed fans, decided to open up a half hour earlier. Boo.

Regardless, I have been enjoying all the tributes....and I'm especially looking forward to what "Saturday Night Live" has planned for later tonight.

As a total side note, we DID get tickets to see Elvis up in Portland, Maine for his scheduled 8/17/78; you might recall he passed away on 8/16... eek

Hi

Enjoy the movie. I am still in shock and sad. Been binge watching all my favorite "Prince" songs. I did not know I liked so many. If I could cry purple tears I would.

I am wondering what kind of memorial they will have for his funeral. I hope it fitting for a King---I mean a "Prince".

Anyone who has had their musical heroes develop from the 70's 80's and even the 90's, need to get used to seeing this. Anyone involved in the Entertainment industry, actors, musicians, artists, live a very hard life. And particularly the stars. They went through extreme drug use, life on the road, enormous pressures, and relentless touring and activity. It all takes a toll.

While Prince seemed to have less skeletons in his closet, he still went through enormous stress in his fight with Warner Brothers. No doubt all of that plays a part.

Just like our parents and grandparents saw their idols, the Hollywood actors of the 30's, 40's and 50's die off in the late 50's and 60's, we are seeing our heroes go now. Bowie, Glenn Frey, Prince, Micheal Jackson, Whitney Houston, etc. are the same as their Bogart's, Gary Cooper's, John Wayne's. Hard drinking, hard living, does catch up with you.

So we celebrate who they were and what they left behind. And what a Legacy by Prince!

It does say another thing. If you see one of your heroes coming to a venue, a casino, a concert near you, it might not be a bad idea to suck it up and go see them while you can. They might need the audience and you might not get a lot more chances.

I felt the music of the mid-1980s was inferior to what had gone before (1954-1982). When videos became the thing, I went underground with ABBA solo. Agnetha (blonde) did 3 albums, and Frida did 2. Benny and Bjorn's stage musical CHESS proved interesting.

Awe, c'mon and gimme more credit than that! "Sand" is what I stick my toes in when I head to Myrtle Beach. I bury my head in Cabana Girls:-)

But this thread was started as a TRIBUTE to Prince. Nothing more. Nothing less. we're trying to share memories and kind thoughts...

And yes, Chynna died the same day. Perhaps you should start a thread about her and take all the "politics" there. I'm sure she won't mind, what with her being dead and all.

The Purple One has a solo here on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps".

Hope ya'll enjoy it:-)

...Wait for it....And wait a little more...

...P.S...When he tosses his guitar at the end? He knew a "roadie" was there to catch it...That's why they have rehearsals:-)

There is a lot of "respect" going on here in this "link"

Prince was another one of my musical heroes that has now sadly passed..

Back in the early eighties, Prince came along and stood on the shoulders of Jimi Hendrix, Little Richard, James Brown, George Clinton, Marvin Gaye, and Sly Stone and created something exciting and new that was not quite like anything else. I remember playing the "Controversy" album over and over. It was and still is exciting stuff.

My favorite album remains his upbeat, psychedelic "Around the World In A Day" which seemed to jump the timeline straight from Sgt. Pepper's..

He was outspoken about copyright and was practically OCD about protecting his work, and I only hope these things didn't contribute to any medical conditions he may have had. I am saddened that he was apparently hooked on pain killers, though imagine there must have been some real pain that he was dealing with..

He was one the best live shows Ive ever seen. Up there with Springsteen in terms of pure showmanship. I will miss him greatly..

But this thread, as Midnite Bob has tried to help you to understand, is not about other perspectives, Ray.

Tell me, would you crash the wake of someone you didn't know that recently died, and mock all the grieving people there? I ask, because this is what you are kind of doing, in this thread, and as one JPFer to another, I can tell you that most would agree that it is in very poor taste to do that.

Prince was a musical giant, and many here have fond memories attached to his music. Please try to understand that and let us morn our loss in peace. smile

Here comes my memory of a very personal encounter with Prince, the human, not Prince the Artist...

Please feel free to "P.M" me for the details about the "Location"...It was on a walking trail behind his house and that of "Another's".....

The "Media" tends to call them "Compounds"...In reality, there are, simply, two different properties outside of Minneapolis that shared a "walking trail"...

For simplicitie's sake, I'll call Prince's property 1
And his neighbor's, 2.

Folks who were visiting property 2, and were on the walking trail, often ran into him...I was one of them!!!!..on only one occasion, but it was consistent with others I've heard from...

You could be on that walking trail, early dawn, late evening, and come across someone else walking...You could chat, friendly, harmless, just enjoying the walk....And then go on your way...

It wasn't until you'd "gone on your your way", that someone would ask, "Was that?"...All by himself alone walking on a trail?

Yes, it was...

Love your picks, Red. smile

And Midnite, "When Does Cry" still packs a wallop. "Maybe I'm just like my father.." Still gives me shivers. Unlike Brian Wilson, Prince was able to deal with his father issues by writing the occasional autobiographical song.

My humble little Prince story..first time I heard Prince--I remember these details. I was working at Tower Records in Sacramento. Prince's first couple of albums had sailed by unnoticed..some time in late 1981, some low riders came in and asked "hey do you have that new jam "Count Your Blessings" ..? --there were no search engines back then (just the "Phonolog Reports" and our own knowledge) and me and the other employees could only shrug, "no, sorry!"

These same guys were back the next night, bringing Prince's "Controversy" album up to the counter. They said that it was "Controversy" that they'd hear on the radio, and that we should check it out.

So we opened a copy and played the album in its entirety, and sold a box lot in about a half an hour. The only other time I can remember that happening was with George Winston's "Autumn" album.

So the song "Controversy" is pretty special to me. I'll always think of it as "Count Your Blessings" for one, lol. But moreover, everything Prince was and would become is all right there. The sexiness, the religion, the desire to break down walls and barriers--musical and otherwise ("People call me rude, I wish we all were nude/I wish there was no black and white, I wish there were no rules")

In the song itself you can hear George Clinton in the layered vocal sound, Sly Stone in the lyrics, but beyond that here was something completely fresh sounding and funky, AND it rocked!!

He became a kind of musical messiah for me and many of my friends at Tower, in those early eighties--bringing all kinds of styles and genres together, into one amazing..SOUND....

Hi Michael and MidniteBob

Thanks you guys. You guys make my heart sing with all these good songs. I spend half my day bingeing on the new ones that you mention that I had forgotten. I also like,"Raspberry Beret", I Would Die 4 You, The Beautiful Ones, Musicology and some others that he did with Chaka Khan--"Sweet Thang"--The kids and I know that one by heart. I wish you could hear my class sing this...hilarious and funny.

Thanks for the wonderful links and the bringing good memories back.

Hey Travis:

Sorry to be so late signing in on this sad notice. 57 is an awfully young age (from my perspective) but I know what a toll today's "stars" are paying with their minds and bodies under all the pressure the industry brings to them. May he Rest in Peace.

This hurts. So does some of this thread, but whatever.

I know plenty of you thought he was just another ridiculous pop star, and plenty others recognized not only his talents but his genius. By now, hopefully everyone has read enough news articles to realize the extent of his impact, and his philanthropy. This man helped so many people.

Here in Minneapolis we lost a good friend and neighbor. He shares our memories and grew up watching the same local shows. He was three years older than me and lived a school away from where I came from. I keep thinking about how he watched Lunch With Casey on channel 11 like we all did here, we late-phase baby boomers in Minneapolis. We all have Prince stories. He STAYED here after becoming a star, and became a superstar after making Purple Rain here in town, with hundreds of us recruited as extras. I was out of town when that went down but some of my best friends have close-ups in those First Avenue scenes. He did random pop-up concerts all the time, and when he came, closing time did not apply. Just last month, some close friends were doing a Ray Charles tribute at an intimate dinner theater in Chanhassen. I was SO STUPID to have missed that...I came so close to buying tickets, and felt guilty beforehand for not supporting their one-time show, which I knew was going to be killer. But I never expected Prince to go. Prince not only showed up to catch the little show run by excellent but not-exactly-famous local musicians, but he came onstage without warning and ripped out a tasty guitar solo before leaving just as quickly and quietly. My friends are forever blessed by that memory, to have happened so soon before he passed.

I had a conversation with him at Sinead O'Connor's first concert at First Avenue. He was walking by as I was talking to a friend, and when I looked up and saw him he said "hi." My reply to him was this: "Hi." I'd tell you more, but he kept walking. He was dressed in pale jade silk and surrounded by large beasts.

In this town we all love Prince. He has done so much for the community, for local musicians, for the local economy, for local charities. I remember when my band played at Glam Slam we kept scanning the balcony, just in case, just in case... He was always attending concerts, and I remember him having a blast at a recent Janelle Monae concert. He just sat with everyone else in the balcony, whooping and pointing his jeweled cane at Janelle, who put on an ESPECIALLY fantastic concert knowing he was there for the whole thing. She made everyone "get low, get low" until we were all down on our knees...and THEN she crowdsurfed us, LOL. Prince loved it.

He was very real to us, not just someone on a screen. I joined the locals Thursday night in front of First Avenue, thousands and thousands of us. A lot of tears and smiles and singing, a diverse crowd being very good to each other, sharing stories. It was spine tingling to all sing "Purple Rain" together, thousands whooping out the final "woo hoo hoo hoos" at the end.

To those of you saddened more than you expected by his death, I feel you. This one is hard. And to those of you who don't care one whit about his life or death, may your disconnection from human emotion not compel you to insult those who feel them.

THIS!

Thank you Mark....Thank you so much!

Sending kind and healing thoughts and prayers up Minneapolis' way!~
