This short instrumental was inspired by walks through San Francisco and by the Alan Watts book of the same title.

Thanks for listening. smile

A very ENGAGING piece, Mike. Not the kind of thing I normally listen to (same remark I'm getting from many on my punk song smile ), but I found myself "following along" as each element was added to the music (and at times removed later). It made me think of watching Brian Wilson create music in the studio in "Love & Mercy"...

So, you "wrapped me up" in your creation. That's impressive, I'd say...

Nice, jazzy mood piece, Mike. A little psychedelic mixed in there at the end. Like it.

A nice sounding piece--Hiding under a cloud in San Francisco--belongs in a movie!

I've walked around San Francisco on both sunny and stormy days. This one brings the former to mind. smile

Nice work, Mike!

Thanks, Travis. I enjoy creating atmospheric type pieces--letting mood rule the day. smile

Hi Calvin, yeah, a bit out there..there's definitely a Brian Eno influence in the way the left channel piano uses echo, but to me there's a big wallop of Lyle Mays (Pat Metheny keyboardist)in the sound. Thanks for listening!

* * * * * * *

Hi Floyd, "Love and Mercy" really showed folks Brian Wilson's eccentric genius at work, and although I have no living-room sandbox, I love to play around with sound and just have fun. So much good stuff comes from a "playtime" attitude towards creating stuff. Thanks!

Thanks, Dan. I've always found a connection between Zen and music--especially improvised music, and walking through San Francisco brought specific melodies to mind, for sure. Getting written music to sound impromptu was the main goal of this. Thanks again. smile

Cool track Mike! Like the Jazz feel to it. Lots of cool sounds and percs. Definitely an original.

I finally broke down and listened after pondering the title a few days. Gee whiz, I'm glad I heard this, Michael. You described SFO stunningly... with a little Chinatown thrown in for good measure. One of my favorite cities in all the world. A riot of sights and sounds. Brings happy memories when I drove my MG out of the front gate at Treasure Island after completing my tour with the Navy. Enjoyed this so much. ----Dave

Monsieur Leblanc..despite it being something you don't normally take in , you gave this a spin and I appreciate that. It makes me happy knowing you found it time well spent. smile

Thanks Mackie. Yes, it does have a bit of a cinematic, underscored quality. Thanks for listening. smile

Thanks, Scott. Hanging out in The Bay Area was always a bit of a commute, coming from Sacramento, so I escaped the rain for the most part. Great ride though, through Napa Valley wine country..thanks again!

*****************************************************************

Hi John, you noticed the percussion, and yes, I was going for a cool, ECM Jazz feel,, with that vintage jazz cymbal lick in 6/8 time against the 4/4 in the song. Thanks!

*****************************************************************

Thanks Dave! Yes, San Fransisco has a lot to take in and is so very culturally rich. I would often abandon my "plans" once arriving, and just let the city sweep me away for a bit. Thanks again smile

Loving this Michael. Especially the smoky sax. The sax made me think of my favorite Springsteen tune, Meeting Across The River. The song is nothing like it, but the sax made me think of it. Also love all the amhient sounds coming in and the keys. Really beautiful stuff. Very relaxing.

Hi Dave,

Thanks so much for listening--yes, I wanted the first half to pulse with city-like energy, but from the POV of a relaxed onlooker..me..and your comments make me feel like I've succeeded..thanks again!

Hey Michael,

A really nice listening piece. It's sonically just out there.

It's frenetic but relaxing at the same time. Great layering and mix down. I wouldn't change a thing. Nice work.

cheers, niteshift

I like the light, jazzy feel to this. There's so much going on (needs multiple listens), kind of like SF itself as I recall, and although it's been many years, I don't imagine it has changed much. Yep! I'm diggin it!

Hi Ricki,

This song has morphed through several versions and edits, and this is probably the best of the lot. I'm glad you enjoyed it and heard the SF connection.

Thanks again, Ricki!
