I値l Bet On You
ゥ 2016 by S.W. Campbell

Sunrise, your eyes
Open to the day
Dreams fade, plans made
For you to put in play
And when you wonder if you have
The will to see them through
I値l bet on you
I値l bet on you

People stall, throw up walls
They don稚 slow you down
Doors locked, roads blocked
You just go around
So when it痴 you against the world
There痴 no doubt what I値l do
I値l bet on you
I値l bet on you

Sometimes you say you fear that fate will have its way
That your story痴 told no matter what we do
I know you were born for more than acting out a play
But even if I知 wrong, I値l bet on you

Plans frayed, hopes fade
Still you sing your song
Heart aches, heart breaks
Still your heart beats strong
So when you think the deck is stacked
But you still play the hand you drew
I値l bet on you
I値l bet on you
I値l bet on you

Scott, That's a real beauty, both musically and lyrical. And your performance really delivers the goods. A wonderful piece of music from a most gifted and talented songwriter and performer. Bravo!

Sweet tune and well fitting lyrics, Scott.
Melody reminds me of a song I nearly wrote a couple of years ago.
Damn! Now I'll have to change it.

Vic

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

Hi Scott,

This is one great song and a really nice performance of it, and the lyric matches the music in its warmth and sincerity.

From a compositional POV, it's a breathtaking bit of baroque pop, full of little sixties riffs that all come together nicely. Did Nilsson ever write a song this lovely?

Mike

Thanks, Dan. I can do it better if I don't play and sing at the same time. Alternatively, I could have practiced it some more. But I had a reason to get it done soonest. smile

Thanks, Calvin. You bring up one big difference between recording audio and recording video: You gotta do the latter when the lighting is right. I have about a two hour window in late afternoon to get this lighting - and even that is going away soon since it is a south facing window. smile

Could use artificial lighting, I reckon. But I'm not good enough to make that look natural.

Thanks, Vic.

I wouldn't worry about using a similar melody. With all the songs out there, I expect there are already a few with similar melodies. smile

I did some screening for the JPF music awards one year. I was surprised at how many songs I heard that had melodies similar to my own. And there was no way I would have heard these particular songs before.

Hey Scott!

What a lovely melody. I was just listening to an interview with a piano/composer a short while back who was "dissecting" why "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" was such a great song. He was discussing the range of melody that clearly reflected the lyrics and mood which just grab our spirits. This melody has that same character. Oh what you could build around this........I really like the bridge as well which these types of songs can use quite effectively.

Nice job, nice write!

Hi Scott,

As usual another beauty from you. from you. Simple perfect lyrics for this one and the music is right on as always. By the way is there any instrument you don't play?lol. Keep up the great work,
Roger

Hi Scott:

You are one brave singer/songwriter to put a song of this caliber on YouTube. By that, I mean everything is "live" and you don't get the opportunity for creative edits, etc.

Like the others, I enjoyed this and wish you the very best of luck with it. Your talents are seemingly endless.

Best regards, ----Dave

Hey Roger:

Don't play drums or bass. Will probably get a bass one day though. smile

Glad you liked it!

Many thanks, Dave.

I probably wouldn't have put this on youtube but it was the most practical way to get it to its target. grin

There IS one control though - which is how many takes you do. grin

In my defense, I was still learning the song on the first ten takes!

Thanks, Ed!

I've written three songs that have that opening chord progression but the melodies are entirely different. I'm beginning to wonder how many more I can get. grin

I tend to write the lyric (at least the first verse) and compose the melody together so they kind of work together to suit the mood. At least that's the theory. Glad it worked in this case. smile

Appreciate the kind words, Ed.

Great job, Scott.

That's a very nice song.

Understanding that it was done on the fly and without editing, but I wished your voice was a bit more in front of the piano. The chord/note progressions along with the vocal melody were inspired and enjoyable - just wanted to hear the lyric/voice more prominent.

Great work, Scott.

Hi again, Scott:

I understand all to well the opportunity for "re-takes" but mine are not "on camera"... LOL! I don't think I've ever written or sung one I later thought could be improved here are there. Eventually, they must be cast aside for other "songs in the oven." Letting go is often difficult.

I also suspect you will be "re-visiting" this one later, off camera and with a little creative editing here and there. It is too good a song to put down.

Regards, ----Dave

Well golly gee professor, that was marvelous.
A beautiful sentiment indeed and I have to know, where did it come from? What inspired it.

The performance in and of itself was inspiring, so thx 4 that.
Pushing record is intimidating enough for me, when doing just audio but video too. My hat's off 2 U.

Have you already pulled the audio from the video because now I'd like to see what your harp and bass players can bring to the party.

I became aware of "ONE" when they used it in the movie "Magnolia". crazy flick

Thanks, Bruce. smile

Yes, it was recorded live - but as a stereo track with piano on one track and vocal on the other. So it is possible to adjust the mix.

Someone in another forum made the same comment as you - so I may have to give it another listen.

Appreciate you listening and commenting.

Yes, Dave - I'm sure I'll come back to this. I spent a day trying to come up with a fuller arrangement - but I couldn't find one I liked better than this. I'll let it simmer for awhile and see....

Thanks,
Scott

Thanks, Pal.

This was inspired by a wonderful young lady that my wife and I are hoping to adopt. smile

You aren't kidding about the difference in having to worry about two record buttons. Now it's not enough to just focus on getting a decent performance - you also have to worry about how you look while you're doing it. grin

some of my favorite things are getting a good take only to realize I forgot to press one of the two buttons. Or getting a good take and recording both only to discover that the lighting changed, or that something was out of the frame, or that one of my hairs was sticking straight up, or..... grin

Would be hard to add parts to the audio track. Not impossible but hard because I didn't use a metronome. If I take another crack at this, I'll probably start from scratch.

Haven't seen Magnolia. Always up for a crazy flick though so I'll add it to the list.

Scott

Scooter, Scooter, Scooter,

So good to hear you and see you at the same time. This was absolutely lovely. The lyrics are very stirring, and I especially loved the bridge. Also enjoyed how those first lines in each verse were broken up.

Musically, you really captured the tender but complete conviction the singer has for "you".

Loved it love !

Cheers,
Beth

A good write, Scott.

Reminded me of classic early pop at it's best. Turtles. Or The Grass Roots. Very cool.

Scott,

Very nicely done...I like the melodic figure against the descending bassline....Keeps both the surprising and the familiar in your arrangement..
Lyrically ...The cascading images (supported by the music) create a great character study and the love and support is so well shown in the progressive chorus. Nice changeup in the bridge and away we go! An excellent piece of work!

Thanks, Iggy. smile

The subject of the bridge was originally a verse. But it just didn't fit thematically with the other verses. Then I thought, "Well, what are bridges for?" smile

Thanks, Colin. Getting the right lighting adds another dimension to the process - as I'm sure you know from your photography. smile
