Really good insight into the business end of things.
What I like here is that they show that the current model includes owning more of yourself as an artist that before.
They have no label, and make monthly income from their downloads.
Kudos to them
If writing ever becomes work I think I'm going to have to stop

I've written 1500 songs without ever being in a band. I can't imagine touring with a bunch of guys.

Tour schmoor:
Not exactly "living" by my definition. Hopefully, better planning in the future will allow these folks to make a little money. Heck, with a good accountant, the write-offs might end up creating a tax free income if they are any good.
Thanks for sharing, Michael.

They knew going in they weren't going to make any money on the tour. There income is in very creative videos (lots of covers) and downloads (and merchandise, etc). Their purpose was to get build their brand even more and get folks get to see them to "spread the word", so to speak. They aren't ever going to be "mainstream" I don't believe. Here's a quirky video of "Happy" by Pharrell Williams: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7X8ZnmLfM0 (they somehow did this video in one take!!). Here's a Beatles cover (playing in one-take): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VW7evu7SJBA&nohtml5=FalseIf look at all their youtube offerings the view numbers are amazing. 10+ million views on this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIr8-f2OWhs

This is where you need good business sense. My daughter bought her friend a Musical Tee Shirt for Christmas. It says, a Musician. Someone who spends $10,000.00 on band equipment, drives 500 miles to make $50.00. I know the feeling. I used to be in the Rose Society. Those Rosearians would drive 200 miles to enter a rose Show. So it's not only Musicians! So, don't call me crazy!

Well, there seems to be a lot of people going freelance. Not the typical ropes and hooking up with musicians. I looked at the net in the beginning to get my feet wet with networking and recording software. Could not get in to college at the time. The more you make the more they take, unless you are a billionaire. It looks to be a matter of different outlets splintering and inscrupulous types that could take advantage of that. That leaves a lot to be said about meeting in person and the written word.
