I saw some at Barnes and Noble for $25 up. Seemed like a lot. I suppose they are small runs with large setup costs. Some of my young friends say there are a lot of young people buying albums, new and old.

Well Gee,
When the Exchange would get in new LP Albums on Guam they would sell for $2.50 each, some for $2.40 each! Of course that was 1960, 61. My how things have changed. Saw a post a few days back where Panasonic, I think introduced a new Turntable because of a Resurgence of Records. I still have my old AR Turntable of which I can use if need be.

That seems so bizarre to me. Unless one has a ton of record playing gear available (without having to go out and buy it) why would you pay outlandish prices for and old idea? True enough, it was fun to look at the album art, read to descriptions of all the tracks and information about the artists... but to me, the CD is still the most viable way to buy and play music.

We live in an ever changing world but this is one idea I'm not going to try. Like Michael, I'll still buy a used LP album of someone I revere or absolutely enjoy for $.50 cents at the local Goodwill or thrift store.

Anyone seeing much action on 45 records? ----Dave

Humm,
They pretty well perfected the LP Record before the CD became available. After some fits and starts they also perfected the CD. In the early days some did not like the smaller disc because of the Covers and Art Work. Probably because of small runs of new LP Records the cost is high. Don't see the LP Record making any comeback to speak of. The only action I have seen on 45 Rpm Records is where somebody has an old 45 for sale at an outrageous price.

Too late, they have already made a comeback. My daughter has a turntable at college, the folks across the hall have one. LPs are the in thing. Whether the resurgence continues is another question.

Holy Smoke Kevin!
Yes I hear the kids have discovered Records. Golly don't tell Marc Alan Barnette this. He thinks Records are something they keep in Washington!

Just saw a post on Gearslutz that old music is out selling new music for the first time in history. A Company in Austria is going to re-introduce a new Reel to Reel Tape Recorder. Wow everything old is becoming new again! I remember reading all the tests on Audio Gear in Stereo Review Magazine. Still have my old Ampex Reel to Reel recorder. Need refurbished tho.

Reel to Reel is coming back because a lot of folks want to record in pure analog audio and not digitally. So recording quality (or maybe the "sound" of audio recording) is what is being celebrated not the "retro" part. Most of the major studio still have and use analog recording equipment.

The same can be said for analog recorded LP's. Folks swear that LP's have better fidelity over 16bit 44.1khz CD's (I don't know if I can tell the difference, though).

I only do digital recording -- it is just so easy! Well the making good music part is tough ....

Statistics can be fun... Roughly 15 million vinyl discs were sold in 2015. A 37% increase from the previous year. However, if you look at the sales from the previous year over year prior and that was over 100% increase - thus the idea of vinyl sales is actually tapering off.

Digital download sales are dropping. The estimate is 9% for albums and 12%, but that is 2014. Not sure the numbers for 2015.

What most of these numbers mean to people that watch a particular niche is: Man, vinyl is making a comeback! Hurray digital sales are going away!

Both of which are actually false statements.

Vinyl is a niche. Digital download sales still amount to billions.

What all these numbers are ignoring are streaming figures - streaming is well over the billions mark and outpaces everything in terms of sheer volume.

Thus the whole vinyl is making a comeback is weird, 15 million in sales compared to billions in downloads and billions in streaming?!? Streaming growth is outpacing vinyl's comeback by orders of magnitude.

Vinyl is fun. But its niche.

BTW - I saw a company at NAMM this year selling a way to cut vinyl discs one by one from your own digital files. If you're so inclined to jump on the vinyl wave, be real cutting edge and buy a way to lathe your own vinyl discs to sell. At least this way you're cutting them as needed. I didn't ask the cost of the device. But I bet it would take a ton of sales to pay off the cost of the device. Oh and it had to work in real time. A very slow way of cutting vinyl.

I've had only one fan ask if I would sell vinyl. I imagine pressing up one vinyl disc would be astronomical. Things that have to be done are: different mastering (mastering for vinyl is entirely different from mastering for CD/Digital), making sure you can fit the music on each side of a disc, vinyl costs, lathing costs, artwork reproduction costs, packaging costs, shipping costs.

What is missed with digital files or streaming is: you can't throw files at someone or the wall when you're upset.

Humm,
While I would not recommend any Artist have Vinyl Records made for sale there are plants that will make them for you just as they do CD's. Same company's that will now do both. And there are a lot of new turntables for sale on the market. I think it is the Needle Doctor, http://www.needledoctor.com that sells new stylus for Phono Cartridges of all types that also lists many new turntables on the Web Site. Many are very expensive.

My old 33 albums are in pristine condition. I would record my favorite songs from the albums right to cassettes. Most albums only got played once.

I have always thought that they ruined an art form when 33's went obsolete. I spent many an hour looking at the covers and all that was inside.

Now I have to wonder, what will be next. I'm thinking that the resurgence in vinyl will wear off. I would like to err on the side of technology.

Ray that $2.50 in 1960 is equal to $20 today and millions in vinyl sales is worth as much as hundreds of millions in streams to the artist.

Preping music for vinyl isn't really difficult. You just need to follow a few rules based on Vinyl's limits -- cut bass at 40 you lose some highs and clarity near the end and keep side length between 15-20 min. It ain't rocket science. Then again I'm kind of busy with animation and spl fx nowadays

Yes Sue,
I used to read about all kinds of things about music and production. There was a compensation used in cutting a Vinyl Master called the RIAA Curve. What that means is the bass frequencies were cut some to prevent the lathe from cutting back into the groove that was just cut. The Phono Inputs added the bass compensation back in playback. Not sure what is being done today however. When recording with a tape recorder there was a high frequency passed thru the heads to make the tape record evenly. Kind of interesting that the young people are buying Vinyl.

LP's are getting to be rather popular. I have seven turntables in my music systems and I enjoy listening to them. In reality the sound quality is not as good as cd's but they are a lot of fun. Turntables allow a lot of messing around. With a cd player there is not much to fuss around with but with a turntable on can spend dozens of hours adjusting and modifying.

With regard to reel to reel it will be interesting to see if some company with start manufacturing reel to reel tape decks. The stock of mint / pristine reel to real decks from the past is diminishing. Looking at the auction sites, there are fewer and fewer available. There are a fair number of reel to reel decks for sale but it is hard to find a really good one in mint condition.

The cost of mailing a LP in Canada is just shy of $20.00.

When I bought my first CD I put Abbey Road in. Got to the end of I Want You, stopped the player, flipped the CD over and started in for side 2. Thought the CD was defective when it wouldn't play the second side.

I got out my old Vinyl albums and played them for my teenage kids. They were amazed at how I could pick up the needle and put it down exactly where the next track started...every time perfectly. The asked "Dad, how do you know where to drop the needle?" I told them it was magic. Funny stuff.

They had a few albums come into the store my wife works at this past Friday,i only got two of them,Chicago Live At Carnegie Hall [4 lp set] and Fats Domino "sings million record hits" both are in VF condition including the covers though the book was in the Chicago lp,the poster was missing.I threw down $1.58 for both! That included the wife's 10% discount.Oh,and at another flea market i picked up one 78 and 3 45's with picture sleeves. They are children's records but fair condition, dates on the are 1954 and 1955.At .50 each.Mike
