I thought I'd share this with you folks. I had my first book published today. The book, "Dirt Roads And Guitars" is now available on Kindle and will soon be available in paperback on Amazon and through various book stores. It is a compilation of 78 of the lyrics I've written over the years.

Congratulations on the book. Did you self publish or go through a book publisher? The reason I ask is because I just finished writing a book and I really don't know what to do with it. Songwriting is my forte not books.

Well,
I did write a book this summer. My first and most likely my last. Been waiting for a little more than 2 months for the Copyright Registration to come back. They did cash my check so it's just a matter of time. I am probably going send it to Script Pipeline Screen Writing competition the first of February. It costs $50.00 to enter. Web Site is http://www.scriptpipeline.com. There are posts in several places on the Web if this Link doesn't work.

Thanks all!

I used Amazon Digital Services on https://www.createspace.com to put it together and publish it. You do have to make a proof order when you're finished. But mine was only around $6 counting shipping and handling. And if I want to order more copies for myself, I get it at the same rate per book. I already had the material written so it only took a couple of days to put it together. I hit a couple of snags along the way as I figured out a few things but for the most part, it was a fairly simple process. I didn't get too fancy with it. There is an old saying....keep it simple stupid. I plan on doing other projects in the future. This is something I've wanted to do for awhile. I appreciate the kind words and encouragement. Best wishes!

Thanks Jim and Mike,

Good for you Jim! I see you have a couple of your own. Nice!

Mike, I didn't waste too much thought on it to be honest. But I did do a few rewrites before it was done. Mostly, I just rolled with the idea and left it at that.

Best wishes!

I, too, never knew of this. Thanks for pioneering it for us.

Dirt Roads And Guitars is an excellent title! And the whole concept is tribute to you. It is something we all can learn from. (Or, properly: It is something from which we all can learn.)

And I'll congratulate Jim Colyer on his books.

I don't have enough lyrics for a lyrics book. But, I'll submit my tennis book. (Explains my avatar.)

Thanks so much!

I'm not going to take credit for this idea. Obviously, others have done it previously. It sure was nice to find out Jim had done some as well. Personally, I just thought it was a good idea so I could give it as gifts and share it with my family and friends. I'm not sure if it would protect someone from copyright infringement of their lyrics but it sure doesn't hurt to be able to show that they were published on such and such date, etc. etc. A poor man's copyright so to speak. Regardless, it was a lot of fun to do and a goal I had for myself. I sure am thankful for all the kind words and encouragement. Best wishes to you all!

That's nice of you to say. I appreciate the encouragement. Of course by being more profitable than writing songs, from my perspective it really only has to sell one book lol.

I have enough lyrics (3000+) to put out a number of books in several genres but would they sell. I don't think poetry is a big seller but that is a bit different than lyrics. Maybe composures would be interested in buying.

Thanks Calvin, Colin and Everett,

I appreciate the kind words. I don't have a lot of hopes that it will sell a lot of copies. I did it more from the standpoint of just doing it, having something I can hand down to my kids (and their kids), to show my kids that anything is possible and to give to friends and family at Christmas. Plus it doesn't hurt to have one laying around when the ladies drop by. Not that they do but just in case they do ha ha.

[i]Good job Wesley! In the good ole' days I believe songs were "sold" so to speak. Quite different from today's way of doing things in the music biz. Who knows, maybe a reader of your "Lyric Library" book will find something they want to put music to and contact you for a collaboration where they are eager to put music to your words. One never knows.

I was encouraged by our very own Brian to take a stab at children's books right around the time I was testing the waters at writing children's songs and fell in love with the whole concept. I can't draw to save my life but went searching for illustrators and lo and behold the words were bought to life. Here are a couple books on Kindle as well, and I actually got my first (albeit small) royalty check just the other day. So exciting but honestly, the writing is the exciting part!! love

Both books rhyme and have value lessons for children which I believe the world needs. A third will be coming out shortly called "Big Bear's Bad Hair".

Hi Lynn,

That's neat that you do that for kids. With so many bad influences in this world today, it's always refreshing to find someone with good intentions and values. I really respect that. I'm glad you received a royalty check too. That always helps make it worthwhile. It just goes to show that your reaching kids too which is even more worthwhile. Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. I'm hoping to write a cookbook next. It's something I've thought about for many years. I also have another project in mind further down the road but it will actually be a novel. I'm afraid that one is going to test me to the fullest. I may start with a book of short stories and build up from there.Anyway, best of luck with your books. Best wishes!

Hey Lynn. I think a kids book accompanied with a CD would be a good seller. I have just enough kids songs for a CD but have no book to accompany it. Maybe we could collaborate?

My family and I are kind of well known where I come from for our cooking. My Mom participated in a lot fairs including the state fair when I was young and won at the state fair back in the late 70's and early 80's. I kind of picked up on it from her. I cooked at a couple of steakhouses and restaurants in our area, catered a LOT of parties, and was a single Dad of three kids for the past 22 years. So cooking is a passion of mine. My friends and family are always asking me for recipes and stuff. And several of them have told me I should do a cookbook. So that is why I'm planning on doing one. I don't know that it will sell a lot of copies but it should sell some. I have more faith in sales of it than I do this book to be honest. Plus, if nothing else, it'll make a great Christmas present to give people.

Wesley you just penned a perfect title for your book "Single Dad's Cookbook". Obviously there are a ton of cookbooks already out there so competition is fierce, BUT your title alone might target a niche' group and grab their attention. Afterall it's no secret that men are the greatest cooks!!

You could start off w/a foreword or preface.....some dad's are single due to the passing of a spouse, a divorce, or being married to a wife whose career takes her away from home on many occasions, etc. Talk about how great it is to get the kids involved..setting the table, mashing, stirring, cutting (when age appropriate of course), cleaning up, etc. You are saying to these other single dads that they can do it and that they can include their children all the while teaching the kids an important life skill.

Go for it!!

Thanks Lynn,

I actually had something similar in mind for a title...."Mr. Mom's Cookbook" but I'm not really sold on it 100%. A lot of my recipes are somewhat complex. I do have a lot of easy ones too. Still milling it around in my head trying to cement the direction I want to go with it. One thing is for sure, I won't be able to put it together as quickly as I was this one. I was fortunate from the aspect that I had all of my songs already written. So basically, it was just copy and paste with a contents page. I had to format the size of the document too so that I could adapt it to the size of the pages in the book. That was one of the snags I came up against. But it worked out. Like I noted in earlier posts, I tried to keep it simple for a first time project. Nothing fancy. Best wishes and thanks for the kind words and encouragement.
