Hi JPFers everywhere! I posted this song several months ago as a g/v. I am beyond happy to now post this finished demo that Mike Zaneski produced for me. While I doubt at this point there will be any changes, honest commentary is always welcomed. Mike, thanks again for the magic! Ricki https://soundcloud.com/rickib/blood-moon-1BLOOD MOON I sleep through the night By the Hunter’s Moon light And dream he returns With a passion that burns But then breaks the dawn I know he’s still gone Yet I seek him by day Like the hunter her prey Blood Moon is rising soon Is it best to live with this need Or to die and be free Under the next Blood Moon Lone wolf bares her soul Leaving tracks in new snow I’ll wait until spring See what warmth will bring Then stay until fall Just in case he calls Wind howls through the cracks When will he come back Blood Moon is rising soon Is it best to live with this need Or to die and be free Under the next Blood Moon The next Blood Moon ©Ricki E. This is lovely, Ricki. There's so much longing, even passion, in the lyric, and it's underscored in a particularly poignant way by Mike's delicate handling of the music and arrangement. To me, the musical subtlety and lyrical imagery create an intriguing juxtaposition. Your vocals are tender and restrained, and suit the mood well. Kudos to you both. Donna

Wow, what a combo—Bellos and Zaneski! Ricki, your skills are undiminished, and Michael really knows how to show them off to their best advantage. Great great work.

Went back for another round, because those beautifully dissonant harmonies called me back. That and the unexpected directions you took with chords and melody. Just gorgeous, and recorded perfectly. Michael is an empath.
But...how come you never write about chickens?

Hey there Calvin, Vic, Donna, Michael LeBlanc, Mark, and Stevie!
Thanks for listening and all the nice comments.
Producing/arranging Ricki's song was fun, as the musical composition was rich and contained all the cues I needed to go the organic route. Her consistent use of the perfect 4th led me to construct the piano part that makes great use of that interval. Her singing, very reminiscent of Kate & Anna McGarrigle's phrasing and timbre--at least to my ears--had me hearing the concertina in my musical imagination..and her 4ths also had me recalling Jaco Pastorius' work on Joni Mitchell's Mingus album..so just for and experiment I tried a (virtual) fretless bass on the song, and it was magic to my ears.
What a treasure of a singer-songwriter we have here with Ricki. Consistent, quality work that's astonishing in its range, imagination, and execution.
Mike

Honestly this is really special. It sounds kind of 60ish and could've been performed at Woodstock with Ricki actually singing it because vocally she has it all covered. Michael your touches and musical artwork had nice contrasts and in all the right places. Only thing it ended so abruptly but that kind of also made it interesting in it's own way. Very qualitative collab. There were no boring parts at all!! Best, Lynn

Very special, Ricki:
You made such an important decision to "hire" the talented Mike Zaneski... and he certainly delivered for you. Congratulations on creating such an enjoyable song. No nits... the arrangement is sheer genius. ----Dave

Hi Lynn, Dave Rice, Eddie, and Gocart Dave:
Thanks so much for listening and I'm glad you enjoyed my arrangement. As Eddie correctly points out..but in my own words..there's really no good arrangement without a good song and performance. I need cues from the music and words to do my thing, otherwise I'm just throwing things at the wall to see what sticks..with this song, I felt a kind of "mania" coming on, as in I was getting too many ideas, cuz the piece is so rich and affecting..my main strategy was to back away from the piece a day or so, so as to see which ideas stuck..
Thanks again!
Mike

Thanks for listening Lynn. I am a child of the 60s so, there's that... And Mike knew exactly how to make the most of the material I gave him. I couldn't be happier. Glad you weren't bored!
