I saw a news release a week or three ago that he was retiring after releasing Black Star. I thought then it was shame but understandable after such a career.

Thank you David, for some amazing music, for inspiring me to write, for Ziggy, and for showing us all what a true artist can paint in our modern world.

Wrote this back in 2003 as an homage to your writing. You will be missed.

me and major tom

birthing the triptych
loving the other
through the guise of his ego
to bridges discovered
though the lad’s insane
when he sold the world
all were astounded
and propelled to the fold

the thin white duke
in his style and his shift
with his diamond dogs
he came down in the lift
drove on to saturday
to dance with john
while the spiders from mars
said thanks and so long

never followed paths that were laid before
never really listened to ground control
still he always laid me low
while his music turned me on
suffragette city’s on ferris wheels
strolling boots of cosmic steel
all the while my pulse unreal
and his music turned me on

me and major tom
coupl’ a kooks in bondage
me and major tom
we’re such pretty things
me and major tom
cement fix its andy warhol
me and major tom

did you know ziggy
was a friend of mine
when he moved to berlin
philadelphia cried
then he lodged with some friends
till he felt real low
until under pressure
he returned to the fold

every now and again
some young americans
find the bewlay brothers
an exotic blend
and when lady stardust
opens his eyes
all he hears is the sound
of rock n roll suicide

never followed paths that were laid before
never really listened to ground control
still he always laid me low
while his music turned me on
suffragette city’s on ferris wheels
strolling boots of cosmic steel
all the while my pulse unreal
and his music turned me on

Saw him a couple of times in the 70s with n ex who was mad on him.
A pal of mine hired him and Marc Bolan to appear at his club the Magic village in Manchester a couple of times in the early 60s when he did acoustic sets for peanuts.
Sad that he lost his battle with cancer

Colin, you owe it to yourself as an artist and musician to be touched by his amazing talent.

Devote the next few weeks to listening to his music and reading his lyrics. I promise you will become better for it.

Wow, very sad. I had no idea he was battling. He just seemed to be a constant going forward.

I always liked Suffragette City as a rocker. Heroes was another favorite, along with The Jean Genie. I even like his posthumous duet with Bing Crosby -- Little Drummer Boy.

I hate to see him leave us.

He was and is a hugely important part of my life. We all write for different reasons, in different ways. David Bowie, like the Beatles, showed me at an early age that it was not only possible to write songs of my own, but that each and every one could be wildly different from the one before it. I don't have to pick a genre and stick with it.

So I didn't. It's the most creatively liberating concept in the world, for me, and it's what keeps me doing what I do. And David Bowie has always been in my head, like a real voice inside of me, urging me to write another one, a different one, a completely different one.

Some of the most respected members of this board have advised me to try to stick to a particular style. But that secret Bowie voice inside of me always rejected that notion. To me it was never about how to monetize this thing...it has always been about being true to each particular idea. I just don't care what other people wish I would write or be or project. The song is the thing. So many writers eventually give up the ghost as they realize their artistic gift will never win them the lottery, and so they quit writing, composing, creating. That will never happen to me. I do it because I'm in love with it. And because he's there, in my head, telling me to get things done.

He lived his life as art. He even turned his death into art.

I'm a blackstar.

I truly believe that David Bowie Freddie Mercury and

The Beatles were the sole influences On mine and many others

Musical Careers, especially as performer song writers

Their songs will stand The Test Of Time and will still be

sung when all of us mere mortals have moved on to the next

world wherever that may be

Of course there are many American Performers who have led

the way and paved the road so to speak, I am not denying that

this is purely my personal viewpoint

One of the most important principles of songwriting is to remember that a good song is a partnership of many different components, all working together to produce a satisfying musical experience.

In that respect, song components are either enhancing or compromising their combined effects.

Mark Great Post so much of what you write here is the

way I feel also I have been lucky enough to see Bowie

performing in the U K whilst I was a uni Student , and

he was a gent off stage as well as on always gave us the

time of day, this has been a sad week for me and others

I feel a big influence in my humble musical career is

now no longer with us Listening to some of your songs

I hear all those influences you write about in your blog

and I am very impressed

That's very kind of you to say, Cheyenne. Thank you. And I agree with you that we are not alone in our feelings.

The artists you mentioned, along with so many others born of the musical revolution that the Beatles ushered in, they all valued freshness and variety and deep personal feeling in all the music they made. Today, somehow, that philosophy is no longer the rule, but rather the opposite. Freshness is a riskier sell than familiarity. Variety is harder to market than sticking to one narrow genre. Deep personal feeling is expected to be the predictable ones, but never too challenging to the listener...you can tell us how much you love us, but you're gonna have to hide you and your monkey.

I'm not sad about Bowie. I'm saddened when I think about his wife Iman, and especially his fifteen year old daughter. But Bowie himself, wow...what a life he lived, and what a way to go out. Those videos, "Blackstar" and "Lazarus"...unbelievable that a man with terminal cancer could turn even his own nasty death into a gripping work of art, timed meticulously to make the actual moment a part of his own creative vision. THAT is artistically heroic. That is dedication to creativity and art.

It will be difficult for me to miss him, because he left enough music to explore for a lifetime. I'm pretty sure there is enough top-quality backlog that will be released in the future to keep us surprised for years to come.

Coming in late to the Party on this...And yes, I said "Party", but meant "Celebration"...Not celebrating that he's gone, just celebrating that he was here....

My first memory, is around 1975, riding in a car with my best friend. I was a "Folkie", David Bowie was WAY off my radar. My friend was a "Rockie"...A Bowie song came on the radio.

My best friend, who I trusted to know about all things "rockie", said: He'd be nothing without a studio producing it".

I took my friend at his word.

A decade later, I learned that my friend, at least when it came to Mr. Bowie, was an idiot!!!!....I was 20, he was 19, what did either of us know:-)????

I've been searching Google & YouTube etc....But can't find the original "Guitar/Vocal" of Mr. Bowie doing Ground Control to Major Tom....I don't know if it was on an early album or not, but it is just him and a guitar doing what sounds like a "demo".

Help me out here and post a link?

Thank you kindly!

Mr. Bowie was, truly an Oddity....!!!!!

Close, John, and thanks!!! but no....

Last year I had Sirius Radio, and on the "Coffee House" channel, they played it...

Nothing but Bowie and a guitar....Just him and a guitar...A "demo", if you will....

I won't rest 'til I find it....:-)
