Hi John,
The melody and accompaniment get equal billing, in my ears--like thoroughly worked out counterpoint, and modal-ly varying some of the motifs helps to delay the feeling of resolution in a really cool way, indeed achieving an "abandoned dreams" kind of sound, for sure.
Quite "lost" in tone, yet quite satisfying too.
