I received airplay royalties from Vietnam and TV royalties from France. How do they get hold of my songs in the first place? I never sent it to them. I'm not complaining mind you, just wondering.

Have you sent any songs to CD Baby or any other distributor that sends them on to streaming services like Spotify, etc.? Or are they in music libraries like Audiosparx or Music Dealers?

Yes I did Colin but I doubt that TV or radio would look there as a source for airplay material, or would they.

Congratulations Everett!

Probably comes from a music library. They're all into International royalties.

Way to go Everett !

Your songs would be registered with your Canadian PRO ( can't remember the name ) and have a unique ID. If anyone uses them globally, then it all comes back to you.

Glad to see that foreign professional companies are doing the right thing, and submitting their play lists where they have used your material.

I'm guessing they have used your songs on live/broadcast TV or radio, not as a placement but as a single use, for "background theme" which they are entitled to do.

So, they have found one of your songs, used it, and then it has been recorded on the rundown sheet and submitted it to their PRO. They have interns for this purpose, so they don't get sued.

This is a great thing for the small artist, in that the major broadcasters now have a "single use" scenario, rather than a blanket licence, where the small guy used to get zero from the distribution, he now gets "pay to play".

HEAPS of congrats Everett, these folks have found music which not only suits their purpose, but it's YOUR music they have broadcast.

Keep 'em comin' grin

cheers, niteshift

Everett,

Welcome to the continuing oddity of the current music business. People get royalty checks from somewhere they never even knew their songs were, and can look at it as a "gift horse" and others can have hundreds of millions of hits and streams and make literally pennies from it. It is the ongoing conundrum of a business that has lost all sense of itself. No rules really apply anymore.

Just be glad you get something. I know hit writers that would appreciate that.

ASCAP has really boosted their International royalties. Some pay rather well. I've had recent royalties from Spain, Austria, Romania, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Columbia, Japan, Denmark, Mexico, Maylasia, United Kingdom, Sweden, Bosnia, South Africa, Poland, Czech Republic, France, Switzerland, Finland, Synapore, Viet Nam, Cambodia, and Hong Kong. It's a new global royalty game today.

Thanks Marc. I guess when I first started pitching songs it was for the hope of making money, but now money has lost most of its appeal. I write now for fun, if what I write helps someone in some way, good. If I get back a fraction of what it cost me to demo it, good. I have no expensive habits, like smoking or drinking, I don't try to keep up with the Jones or the jet set, I live within my means. This is my only "waste" of money, so I don't feel too guilty spending it. The Lord is good.

Everett,

We all do this for one main reason. To share what's inside of us with as many people as we can. Whether it is a small personal song for our friends or families, kids learning their way in life, people going through rough patches and need it for "self therapy", all the way up to people that take it seriously and attempt to play on the "big league playing field", it is all the same in relavency. If you are doing what you feel compelled to do, not wasting a lot of time or money on "get rich quick schemes", that is never a waste, either of time or money.

Do what you enjoy, see where it dictates and then let the chips fall where they may. There is no right or wrong, just what you feel elevates your lives and those you touch through your efforts.

No waste whatsoever.

I don't consider it a waste but some do. Years ago parents use to tell their kids to hit the books so they could get a good job, rather than be playing some silly sport. Now those that become good at any silly sport can become a millionaire over night while some with a good education can't get a job. Our world has turn upside down. Parents encourage their kids who have a talent in sports, music, etc to work hard at it so they can become rich and famous. LOL

We are all given talents, some more glamorous than others, and we should share those talents with others, not necessarily for free, but not necessarily to get rich on either. Those talented in the trades are paid a good wage, such as electricians, plumbers, carpenters, etc. Those in professions like Doctors, nurses, lawyers, etc. get rewarded for their talents and gifts. Some in the arts get well paid for their skills also.

I agree that those that are the best in any field should be rewarded accordingly, but it just goes too far where the top one percent get 95% of the money while the other 99% get to split the remaining 5%. There is just too much of a spread between the top one percent and the other 99%, many of the 99% may be almost as talented as the top 1%, but get little for their skills.

Take music for instance, in small towns there are musicians and singers that have lots of talent, they get asked to donate their talents to help raise money for someone in need, they do so with no monetary reward. A top of the line rich and famous singer would never get asked to do this on a small scale because they wouldn't have time to do so. They would do so on a big project like a flood, fire, etc. they may do it out of the goodness of their hearts but the good publicity would also help their careers.

There should be a more equable way to spread the money around but I don't have the answer of how it can be done. Those on top want to stay on top and want to claim most, if not all, the money on top. Human nature I guess.

Hey Everett,

Yes, their used to be a "split" in that broadcast companies would pay a blanket licence fee and use as many songs as they like, dependant upon their audience reach. This still applies to radio, as far as I'm aware, but certainly not to television.

Your song, at one time, used once on live TV would have earned zero, as it would would have been out-gunned in the split, hence earning nothing.

Now, as every song has unique ID, it is registered, and payment is made solely on that song, and it's audience reach.

Just look at Mr Schick. Crickey ! We'll have to call him "Global John " next.

Some things have gotten worse, re songwriters, but if your work is used in traditional broadcast media, the little guy is winning for once.

And so are you Everett. Again, congrats to the little guy whose work is well considered, and can compete on ability alone. smile

cheers, niteshift

Thank you Niteshift. I usually pick up a bit of airplay royalties every quarter from songs I pitched years ago that are still getting spins, mostly from Canadian radio. I rarely ever did pitch songs to foreign radio stations, a few US stations, but never in Vietnam. It's the same when The Today Show used one of my songs, I never pitched to them, but they got it some where and not through a library because I received 100%, no library split. I guess when you put songs out there you never know where they will land. I just wish some big name artist would like one of my songs and come looking to record it. Not likely to happen, but it cost nothing to dream. LOL
