... sometimes there's just nowhere to turn...

THIS TOWN AIN'T BIG ENOUGH

i hear montana is pretty this time of year
i ain't been to vegas for a while, so i might head there
the south of france or katmandu
if there's no chance i'll run into you

this town ain't big enough, baby
big enough for you and me
all this small talk's driving me crazy
i can't hide from what we used to be
around every corner, in ev'ry face i meet
in ev'ry cobblestone of every street
   this town's overcrowded with memories
so, this town ain't big enough for you and me

it ain't easy watching you run around town
i know it's over, my heart needs to break some new ground
just when i think i'm strong
you walk by and you prove me wrong

this town ain't big enough, baby
big enough for you and me
all this small talk's driving me crazy
i can't hide from what we used to be
around every corner, in ev'ry face i meet
in ev'ry cobblestone of every street
   this town's overcrowded with memories
so, this town ain't big enough for you and me

if we could cut it down the middle, divide it with a fence
maybe my heart would stand half a chance...

this town ain't big enough, baby
big enough for you and me
all this small talk's driving me crazy
i can't hide from what we used to be
around every corner, in ev'ry face i meet
in ev'ry cobblestone of every street
   this town's overcrowded with memories
so, this town ain't big enough for you and me

Thanks for listening.

Hi Floyd,

Great mix , vocals, and overall production.

The chorus emphasizes how the town's not "big enough" because everything reminds him of her, so I'm not sure if the bridge works, because it seems to be about equity. But if everything reminds him of her, how will it help for everything to be divided in half? Maybe I am misreading the bridge--it wouldn't be the first time!

Mike

Ooh, wonderful and super skilled songwriting!

Everything is to the point and great contrast in both the lyric and musically in the chorus! The music is as big as Texas, which is appropriate with that hook. I had a great listen!

I love how you made the girl look good, by turning the cliché "this town is not big enough for both of us" around emotionally, and telling it from the hurt protagonist's viewpoint. Wonderful writing!

If anything, I'd swap the second and the first verse around, as the second verse sets the stage much better (who, when, where, what, how). The first verse elaborates more on the emotion, as I read it. I think that would make a stronger impact from the start. The line "my heart needs to break some new ground" really made me pay attention!

In the bridge, I'd also consider underlining the world "half", with a long high note, in stead of dividing it between "stand" and "half" like you do now... "stand haaaaaaaaalf a chance".. because that would emphasize the first couplet you had in the bridge ("cut it down the middle"/ "divide it with a fence"), and make that look even better, imo.

Who's on the recording, is it a studio demo or did you do it yourself? Sounds pretty close to what they are pitching in Nashville to me.

Anyway, song of the month for me. I'm a sucker for this type of songwriting. Sounds like a Brooks & Dunn hit to me (but the town isn't big enough for both of them now! heheh).

Pagin' George Strait...OK he retired but what the heck
we have mr jane to carry on what is now a tradition.
Keith Whitley, George Strait, Clint Black, Alan Jackson
and a precious few others defined this tradition for us.
We thought they "saved" country music while never
dreaming it could morph into what passes nowadays.
But there's something in the air of late -- hints here
and there that the times are a changin' in the country
music world. So mr jane instead of carrying on the tradition
you may very well be at the vanguard of a new one and
we hope so.

Dang, I got off course. We LOVE this tune!

Floyd,

Great tune, pulls you in and the great melody stays with you. I don't often disagree with Mike Z, but I like the bridge as it is metaphorical -- stating that yes, everywhere he goes he sees memories, but metaphorically, if those memories and faces could stay on one side, he might be able to exist there.......I don't think the line is meant to be literal in other words. Therefore I think it's a great expression.

Nice performance/production/write!

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

Thanks, Mike. The bridge is "an alternative" idea - he qualifies it by "maybe"...

Kolstad - I do appreciate the nice comments... regarding the swap - I prefer the "intrigue" of verse 1 coming first, followed by the "in-depth" of verse 2. A personal thing, I guess... thinking about it, if I heard it the other way, I would likely suggest that they be swapped... I produce all my own demos at home (a lot cheaper that way!!). Appreciate the listen...

Thanks, Dave. I was listening to the radio today (what is called Country) for the first time in a while. I don't mind that music evolves into something else... but why did they have to KILL Country music?
