Hi all,

Here's one that I started in Nashville in 1996, and that vocal is what you hear, but I've revamped much of the music. This one still speaks to me, though there are some seemingly opaque lines that I've thought about changing, like the opening couplet, but haven't been able to otherwise improve upon. Also the weak (identity) rhyme of passion with compassion--those words seemed to be exactly what I wanted to say, and I haven't figured out how to say it with a better rhyme. Any and all suggestions and comments about those things or anything else--all welcome. Thanks!

Joined At the Fault

We live in a golden state
And agitate against our call
An inch of trust, a pinch of salt
A coupled crust joined at the fault

Some people say there'll come a quake
To break us in its grand assault
It's true we move in our own way
Swayed by our love and joined at the fault

Joined in our humanity
Our genius and insanity
In our imperfect passion
In our selfless compassion

We might be two tectonic plates
That days or centuries will reason
We'll relocate to our new fate
When comes the quaking season

But for now we're coupled thus
Within our treason and our trust
The movement of our love is all
Homed in our hearts and joined at the fault

Joined in our humanity
Our genius and insanity
In our imperfect passion
In our selfless compassion

HI Mike,

Oh wow ... it's like a force of nature!
BEAUTIFULLY done, in every respect!

In July, I spent a few days in San Francisco. Every time I visit, I think of how an earthquake could come at any moment. It's always in the back of my mind. I know it's just a fact of life for the residents, but I wondered how I'd feel living there ... whether that feeling would always persist, or whether I'd eventually just go through periods of forgetting!

Good stuff Mike. Got a 60s vibe to it which I like. I don't mind the passion/compassion rhyme at all. Better than forcing a rhyme just for the sake of it.

Michael,

Excellent production and vocal. A terrific "sound". I really like the way you use small bits of instruments in your work. They seem "works of art".

There was something about it that made me think back to Strawberry Alarm Clock and Lemon Pipers...

A great listen.

Can't hear anything you need to change here, Michael.
Excellent arrangement that holds interest throughout.
Shades of Bryan Ferry maybe.

Mike:

Thanks for sharing the back story on this really well-done song. No nits... only admiration for your many talents and especially that unique vocal quality. I enjoyed every minute of this... and can relate after living in a fault-zone there for about six months. Best of luck with this one... and everything you do.

Rhyme? Who cares when it works like this. The write's message hugely trumps anybody's rhyme nits in our book. Cool taking a 20 year old vocal and reworking it. It seems that would be an interesting experience. This immediately reminded me of my 1968 almost obligatory visit to San Francisco.

Very nice arrangement to already fine vocals and the metaphors are wonderful.

Yup, we love it!

Wow, talk about a clear mix, Mike!! Dang

Music reminds me of the mid 90'ies, like Sting's "10 Summoner's Tales" album (and I love that album). Sounds quite british and poetic to my ears.

Michael,

I haven't read any other crits/comments, as when I here something unique, I don't want to read what might influence or detract from my immediate thoughts.

I really like this write, well arranged and performed. I have just one sug that I think would aid the build by slowing "delaying" it a tad. In your first verse, IMO, I'd keep the last line of vs 1 being sang more straight and not going up to the falsetto, maybe even pulling down conversely. It came a little unexpected, as I hadn't had time to begin to get into the song's vibe at that near point. By waiting till the 2nd verse, you then empower that line and also start the build at that point where the listener has now had time to better welcome the lift. Use or lose......I really enjoyed this. You could also possibly have some background falsetto refrain (joined at the fault or meet be back at the fault) put back further in the mix beginning with the trumpet outro--I was hearing that in my mind as well--not for sure however on that last idea.

Well done!

steady-eddie.

Hi Michael,

I like the soundscape.....Sounds like Gordon Lightfoot singing a tune from "Hair"... I mean that in a good way!!!! (both big faves of mine)... I could hear it segueing into "Age of Aquarius"....Great vocals...

peace out,

You did a great job on this one, Mike. It sounds downright sumptuous! Way to keep a laser focus on your hook as well! I just noticed, you live in CA! Is this what comes from living on top of an active fault line? smile

Hi Calvin. I appreciate the kind words. I think this was a rare one in that I wrote the melody and music first, as an instrumental, and that's why the big leap in the melody--my voice actually replaced the lead instrument, so nice call on that!

Hi Lisa. You'd definitely either move away or get used to the idea and then when an earthquake happened, you'd be surprised and shaken. Then you'd be on edge for weeks..then settle down again. Anyway, thanks for listening and I'm very happy you enjoyed it!

Thanks, Michael! Thought about a tremolo guitar solo, but the song runs pretty long, without.

Hi Jimmy, Thanks for listening and the kind words. It's much appreciated, kind sir.

Hi Stevie. That's what I thought. Why force a rhyme. You get a sixties vice and so did Floyd. I was thinking 90's, but truth be told, I'm about thirty years behind the times.. smile

Hi Floyd. I think "Incense and Peppermints" is one of the coolest songs ever. On many projects I do take a montage-like approach of using many instruments, but sparingly, to create a kind of multi-colored quilt. This one was more a "gut and rebuild" project. I was fortunate to be working with digital gear back then, so there's little degradation to the hundred or so pieces I recorded in Nashville. But I was an idiot--there's reverb stuck on most of them.

Hi Vic. I love all things Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music. I am very pleased you and others are hearing a variety of influences! The truth is--as I now remember--I was shooting for Elton in the chorus and Gordon Lightfoot in the verses. Don't ask me why. smile

Thanks Dave! Yes; if you're a writer and you live in California, sooner or later you're gonna wax philosophical about earthquakes, faults and whatnot. Tectonic plates that seemingly have there own will..have you seen maps of where these plates are heading? The earth will look quite different, at least from space, in a millennia or two.

Hi Janice and Bud. Thanks! Big smile on my face, knowing you love it. Yeah, I was recording into a Fostex digital 8 track Hard Disk recorder, more commonly known as a Fostex D8, I think. If only I'd have recorded everything dry..

Travis. You get ten bonus points for nailing my vocal stylings in the verseds. I definitely remember I was aiming for Lightfoot.I used to have a spot-on Lightfoot, and loved to take heavy metal songs, like Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" --and do them up with Lightfoot impression.

Thanks Magne, and boy you've got good ears, to catch the nineties British feel. I was heavily into a Scottish band by the name of "The Blue Nile" and they used a trumpet in a very similar way to what I'm doing.

Hi Eddie. I usually add harmony vocals, but abstained for the first time in years--I felt the song was full enough sounding without/ I also like putting them "over" my lead, but that would be impossible here. I think singing the first one low is a great idea. I might actually mess around with that and see. Thanks again!

Hi Iggy..Well Hair was written by a Canadian, if memory serves, and lots of singers who went on to become famous sang in Hair, so it wouldn't surprise if Gordon actually was in a regional version. back in the late sixties, when the writers were still testing the songs. Thanks for making me laugh hard, btw. "East To Be Hard" would actually have made a great Lightfoot cover.

Thanks Ricki. Yes--from living on a fault line, and thinking about my ex-girlfriend. I do remember writing her in California from Nashville. She had mentioned they just had a big earthquake and that the "tectonic plates were getting frisky." She basically put the idea in my head of "tectonic plates as lovers." So this was me making sense of our relationship, pretty much. California is a marriage of two tectonic plates that slowly over time must drift apart! This was a liberating thought, at the time. I realized that our relationship ending wasn't anyone's fault. No pun intended. Thanks again for the kind words. smile
