Yeah I know, it's an 18 page article. Still worth the read. John

Well, John I did read a couple of pages to get the gist.
Yes that does seem to be the way it is done in many cases. It's thankfully, not compulsory.

John:
My first "tip-off"... it came from the New Yorker. After reading and reading and reading... I finally decided the writer was some kind of cult worshiper and I clicked the whole thing away. These days, clicking something off that insults what little intelligence I have left... is about the only power available to a poor schnook like me. I do it on the TV all the time. The rest of my TV time is usually spent surfing channels in a vain attempt to find something of worth.
I find more on my arch-enemy, public television these days 'cause most of the shows they run in the evening are from the Brits. Somehow, with smaller budgets and a really small group of actors (you see them over and over again in different shows... it becomes entertaining to attempt to recognize them) and they usually have some greatly written story lines.
Back to the topic at hand. Songwriting, to coin a phrase used recently by Raleigh Bob... has been reduced to pure drool or even drivel if one is forced to listen to what is mostly being "aired" these days.
Thanks for sharing the article. Thank God Composers still write worthy creations for the most part.
----Dave

More people are making more great music and placing in an oversaturated marketplace where there isn't a demand for 99% of it and it just keeps piling up.
Simple math: The public needs 1 to fill it's need for a year. Creators make 10,000 each month which piles on top of the previous month, over and over and over.
And the quality of music has homogenized. It is all squeezed into the middle and is much the same. Even the outliers are not breaking new ground, but simply resurrecting something from an earlier era and claiming it as their own. (All things mid to late 80's are hot right now).
For every dollar someone will spend on music, I bet there's no less than 100,000,000 dollars worth of options, not to mention they don't even need to spend the dollar, they can get it free making the problem even worse. People are bored with music. It has very little meaning. They DO like ARTISTS and STYLE however... and more than anything else, HUMOR. Make them laugh with your lyrics, performance, video etc. and they'll come much faster than they ever would for your music. That is beside the point now. We've overkilled their appetite. We've fed them their favorite food in unlimited quantities until they got sick of it all and have moved on.
And then there's the downside....

Hi Folks:
In light of all this great news, why don't we just quit writing songs and do some serious navel gazing like they do in Washington, D.C.? Colyer is right... too many songs!
Enjoy your new jobs at McDonalds,

I like Brian's "homogenized" term. Maybe more pasteurized than homogenized (sterilization process). John

Dave! You have a job at McDonalds? Lucky you! I'm still riding the back of the Turnip Truck. Just kidding. I wrote my last song in 2009. Maybe somebody will pick one or two up eventually but I'm not counting on it. I doubt if anybody is doing much at present and things won't pick up until 2017 when Whats-His-Name is out of office. Keep on Trucking!

It's like backing up a stream or river to make a dam. The Dam is all the songs and it's TOO bad it has come to this but IT IS WHAT IT IS so Deal with it. I just keep doing what I do best and wrote songs about World Events or Cause Songs....Still have a CHANCE in that area. AND I'm pretty good at it....

Thank God this whole idea of making money on songwriting is imploding, and, even better, aspiring songwriters are finally realizing it's not going to make them rich.
NOW let's maybe focus on writing only what really moves us, rather than trying to strike gold imitating our betters. Focus on the music, not the bloody reward. That's where it all began, and that's why you first responded with delight when your mama sang you lullabyes, and that's why people pay good money to listen—because it MOVES them. Funny, touching, bad-ass, noisy, outrageous, calming, thoughtful...whatever. If you write for the sake of the music and not for the sake of the reward, you will be rewarded with a different kind of satisfaction that lasts a lot longer than a paycheck.

Bean counters have destroyed music, in my not-so-humble opinion Also, I've rejected the idea of a 'hook', the entire song should hook you ( which I guess is the premise of the article ). Most of the American Songbook standards did this, and did not rely on a bridge to hook you, and, in many cases, the bridge/chorus was not the hook to the song. A good example is Besame Mucho. But, I guess your average young listener these days are guppies in need of hooks, but, to my ears, the bait stinks.
