Rock and Roll is DEAD and Pop is on Life Support.
I know Marc is going to chime in here and tell me ALL her fans and ALL the Money she is making but This Video and Song is Trash. Sad.....but JUST MY OPINION...and I LOVE ALL MUSIC.

Barry,

I don't care for it either. And there is plenty that Taylor has done that I am not a fan of. I am a fan of her business acumen, her talent and how she has been able to continue her journey when so many others would be wiped out doing the same thing. And to keep from the self destruction that is so inherent in that business. She still stays above it all.

But I left Rock and pop 30 years ago, so there is nothing in any of those genres that I have any interest in. Not going to get any defense from me on this one way or another. To me, ALL ROCK and POP, electronica, dance, alternative, rap, hip hop, etc. sounds exactly alike, is totally in the gutter, and I stay away from all of it.

I just don't understand why people only pick on country as sounding all alike and crappy.

Country and some Christian is the only thing LEFT...lol
I just think Taylor can do SO MUCH Better but apparently she likes what she is doing and thinks it's good. ALSO she is SO Into the Selfie Nation crap and her Stupid GIRLS and all The flash and glitz....WOW....I don't know much but believe in five years she is GONE from the scene like Mariah or Some of the other girl crap. AND MARC....this feud crap between her and these other self absorbed women is just awful. I Only listen to POP and Rock to see what is going on. BUT Taylor's Video is SO BAD and the song with the ridiculous rapper is one of the worst things I've ever seen AND IT WON....I think people who vote for this are blind and deaf.....In the mean time I LOVE Florida Georgia Line's new song ANYTHING GOES....it is an amazing song and groove and THOSE guys really got it going. I was wondering if you knew WHY Sugarland broke up? She is only so so without him and HE Disappeared. Together they were really good and HE had a very cool influence for their sound. There last album THE INCREDIBLE MACHINE AND Video were some of the best music I've seen....mostly rock but really good.

Barry,

What I know about Sugarland, I can only tell you what I have heard from people pretty close to the source. What I have heard is that they were always designed to be a vehicle for Jennifer Nettles. They were never actually supposed to be a trio.

But when the Dixie Chicks blew up, they went ahead and did the trio thing as the record labels were looking to replace the Chicks. The "other girl" was never really wanting to be on the road and wanted to stay in Atlanta, and just write songs and mail them in expecting Sugarland to cut them. It is my understanding that she was somewhat difficult to deal with. There were conflicts there and it was easier to discard her. If you don;'t want to do the work, dont be involved. And Jennifer wrote "Why Don't You Stay" by herself, demonstrating that she didn't need anyone. Also, doing duets with people like BON JOVI, enabled her to really be the face of the whole group.

When Brooks and Dunn retired, they moved effortlessly into the duo category and kind of took that mantle for a while. Kristin, DG (Designated GUY in the group) had other projects, one being a company doing film and television music he has with his brother.

Then Jennifer took time off to have a baby, and the usual thing that happens with groups happens. Girls get pregnant and look to family. The road no longer is that attractive, so they drop out. Guys tend to be able to continue on, but it really ends the careers of girls quickly. The same has happened with Lady Antibellum, as they are all having kids and dropping off. Their main star has dropped anyway, so it is more getting out while the getting is good.

To my knowledge that is pretty much it. Everyone has about a three-five year run at this, and you start to see the decline before the general public does. Adaptation is the key to this business and you find artists, morphing into more writers and producers, finding the new acts, and bringing them into the fold. Some turn to acting, some, as in Taylor, go find other markets to conquer.

Just a very normal evolution of careers. Takes a long time to get there, on top for a short while, then a LONG decline. Some people would rather get on out, than be the musical version of that fighter who stays in the ring long past time to get out and make themselves look foolish and out of touch.

I am sure they are not finished. If they follow the lead of most artists, they will continue on with respective projects, release their own material, possibly tour again if the timing is right, play Indian Casinos, etc. And will still be around.

Most people don't just drop off and die. They might not have current mainstream record deals or be on the top of the charts, but they usually still write, record and perform. This might be one of those acts joining the current pilgrimages to Vegas, to make ENORMOUS MONEY.

It is why I constantly say to people like Ray, that a LOT of those old Classic country artists, STILL perform, still put out records, still are alive, some of them, doing better than ever. If you were to see Charlie Pride, he is doing great on the Casino circuit. And gets to play a lot more golf.

Another guy I see all the time is VINCE GILL. He is still out there, records, performs, mostly on Monday here in town with THE TIME JUMPERS, and plays a LOT of golf.

So if you like some artists, songs, or whatever, Google search them, go to their web sites, and purchase some product. You will all be happier for it.

You are welcome Andy. Part of my role over here, to provide some "other side of the desk" information when I know something. I have heard some of the people involved talk about certain subjects, so when I can I try to provide information.

Thanks for reading.

I am totally impressed with Taylor! She understands her audience and delivers! I never understand folks saying she could be so much better when she is the one winning the music lottery and they are doing the regular nine to five! No offense but I'd take her music biz advice any day!

The video is rediculous and the song is the same old overproduced hype-pop that barely has a heartbeat, imho. Don't get me wrong, she can sing, and she does attract good musicians. It's a shame the direction the music industry is going but there have always been periods of subpar bubblegum art dished out to the public as if it were relevant. As David Byrne sang "Same as it ever was." :-p

There is good music out there (even here in the JPF forums!); just don't expect much of it to percolate up out of the depths of the corporate music world. I will take good art over high sales any day; I don't need someone to be famous for me to listen to their music.

Peace,
TC

It's a number 1 song on Billboard.
Video of the year.
Taylor is a no 1 artist.
Lamar is no 1 MC of 2013.

Everybody has an opinion on music, and most of them seems in favor of this according to the sales numbers.

My opinion.. it's sort of meh, too much talk and too little musical action, for my taste. Boring for a musician, maybe more exciting for a performer to do. Fans just listen to lyrics these days, it seems. Or should I say, fans just care about the pure excitement of watching celebrities.

Why worry about what's going on in a world you are not a part of? Find your corner and be happy in it.

I agree with you John.
when it comes to her more pop sound, I prefer her Red album songs over 1989, but really enjoy her work. Seeing her for 2nd time tomorrow night. Puts on an awesome show and the energy at her shows is like nothing I have ever seen. I guess anyone will have lovers and haters.
I have all her albums and love them all
