Bob Young, a JPF member, Pineyfest favourite and long time musician and true entertainer passed away recently.

I think anyone who ever met Bob was touched by him...a great sense of humour, a truly nice person, ..one could go on raving.

My own special memory of Bob was from Pineyfest when he had Tink and (I think) Ricki accompany him on the bubbles while he played his classic song "Roll Me A Long One"...about finding a big joint in a coat he was about to give away.

He was full of great advice..."play to the back row", "all you need is a few really good, easy to play songs", "show them you're having fun" are some that stick with me.

I know he has not been around here for some time, but man when he was...

RIP Bob. I'm going to go play his classic "American Stories" now.

oooooh....
so many great memories of Bob....
one summer after Pineyfest Bobbie booked for of us for a concert in the park Bob Young, Melody Guy, Emily Sanders, and me. Bob was the biggest hit with the crowd...
He almost played on my CD...but at the last minute before recording began he was having heart trouble...and driving down to Nashville was out of the question...
My favorite memory of Bob may seem a bit odd.... For years I told my musical friends that I wanted/needed to find someone to play guitar for me because my level of playing was not really good enough for performance bookings.... and always these well-meaning/ polite people would say that no....I was good enough...not to worry. But Bob actually told someone who told me that I needed a guitarist or needed to get better because it just wasn't adequate. I went over and thanked him for being the first to tell it like it was and agree with what I knew to be very true. He apologized , (I wasn't supposed to have heard that, he said), but admitted it when I pushed him. I always appreciated his honesty..

Sorry to hear this. I never knew him personally but it sounds like he was well liked, what more can one wish for than to be fondly remembered by those that knew him.

My sincere regrets. Thanks for sharing this sad news with us, John. I never made it to Pineyfest but "know" so many of the attendees "on-line" and fondly remember Bobbie Gallup and her husband who started that venue. It is a sad fact of life that our friends and family numbers will dwindle as we move down the pathway of life. Very sad. RIP, Bob Young. ----Dave

In the spirit of Ben Willis' post...here's one of Bob's posts to tell you the experience this man had, and a bit of who he was

Bob's words from one of his posts. The context is a discussion regarding how loud music can or has to be

This is gonna meander a bit..please bear with me...

In 1959 or 1960 my father bought me my first electric guitar and amp..it was a three quarter size fiberglass Supro with a little matching amp.
It was teeny..
A couple of my friends got guitars and amps around the same time but theirs were bigger and louder.
When we would get together to play the only way I could be heard was to turn my little amp all the way up...
I didn't know I was overdriving and creating cool overtones or any of that stuff..I just knew what I had to do to be heard.
Pretty soon, the only way the guitar sounded right to me was all the way up.
Cut to 1974..me and two friends have a trio..my amp setup is three fender blackface twins into dual showman bottoms with altec lansing 15s..my bass player is using three sunn colliseums into 6 ampeg

sweet sixteen cabinets..he's pushing about 1500 watts rms on stage...
Yes...it was pretty loud....
We had just been given our first tour..opening for the Beach Boys on the midwestern leg of the summer of 74 tour with Bachman Turner Overdrive..
The PA company was Showco out of Dallas..we had worked several concert openers in Chicago and knew a bunch of guys on the Showco crew...
The PA was one of two massive PAs on tour that year..the Beach Boys had one and the Grateful Dead had the other one..
What made them special was that they were all front loaded..all speakers no horns or tweeters...The cabinets ranged from several dual 18 inch speaker cabinets on the bottom thru stacks of 10s, twelves, fifteens and a whole bunch of paper fours and twos for the highs..the stacks were about 20 or maybe 25 feet tall..
We had 70,000 tube watts in the mains and 7000 thru wedges and side fills on stage for monitors.
Our first show was in a football stadium in Joliet Ill..about 45,000 people outdoors...
My trio was on stage getting acclamated..the crowd wasn't paying any attention to us, they didn't knoiw or care who the hell we were...
Anyway..one of the showco sound guys says over the monitors"Bob..give me a chord or two and lets check these mains"
I reach down and turn my SG all the way up and hit a simple second fret A chord...WELL...my life changed forever..

I felt that chord roll off the stage and over and into the crowd..it was like a wave..eventually, people way at the other end of the field had spun about to face the stage and were ramming arms and fists into the air...
I'll tell you what..parts of my body got hard in that instant and stayed hard for the next 30 years!
It was said pf our band and me in particular that after God finished naming the animals and creating Adam he had a whole vocabulary to invent.
When He got to the word "loud" he came and watched my band for a couple of sets so he could establish the parameters.
By the end of that summer my stage setup had expanded to 5 twins, an occasional marshall and whatever else we had room for.
We worked college bars and small 800 to 1200 seat concert venues...if we didn't think they could hear us in the back row..we just added more amps.!

I remember this guyy coming up and saying..
hey..couldja turn it down a little, my friends and I can't hear each other talk"
I leaned over the stage and said"Look around..ya got several hundred beautiful young women in revealing clothes leaping and dancing to the music..ya got one of the best touring bands in the midwest, and an endless supply of cold beer!...and you and your friends want to TALK?"

So...now I'm 61 and how is my hearing?

As I write this, my cat is curled at my feet...she has two very distinct whines..one for when she wants her litter changed and another for when she's out of food...I can hear and recognize them both..my wife can be anywhere in the condo and say "Bob, honey..let's go to bed"
I can hear that fine as well....
I can hear and discern notes well enough to know that Pearl Jam and White Stripes are still pretty good rock and oll bands and that Dave Matthew continues to suck...

So...I can hear just about all I need to hear..

Wjen I go out to listen to a band I DO NOT worry about a little cigarette smoke..I quit 6 years ago, by the way..nor do I choose a seat near the door so I can beat a hasty retreat...no..I like to go right down front and hope somebody in the band has the balls to turn it up and say "check THIS out!"

I am probably the worlds greatest Ted Nugent non-fan!
BUT..one day, a long time ago he made a place in my heart htat he still occupies.
He was on the old Merv Griffin show...
Merv sez..
Ted...your music is wonderful (now right away we know that's code for I hate you and your godawful rock and roll)..your music is wonderful, but why does it have to be so loud?"

Ted slowly rises from the guests chair..leans over the desk, grabs the lapels of Mervs coat and draws him upwards out of his seat till their noses almost touch.."Merv"says
Ted.."Cos' THAT'S THE WAY I LIKE IT!"

Attaboy Nuge...I'm with ya on that one!

Bob Young

Thanks again, John for sharing the video about Bob. He obviously had a great deal of "stage presence." I enjoyed every minute of watching him "enjoy every minute"... and so did his audience.

He was unique. ----Dave

I had the pleasure of conversing with Bob many times. I'll always remember him reading a lyric I'd said was inspired by his work. He was touched, and said yes, it was something he'd write. He listened to the song and said the music wasn't the way he would have done it; it was better! LOL! It's something I'll never forget; getting an excellent review from such a gifted man.

P.S. One of my favourite songs of his was, "A Woman Like Me" I downloaded it long ago, (and a few computers ago) and can't seem to find it. I tried Soundclick but it won't download. Does anyone know another place it might be? Thank you!

He was an original character and certainly a power to be reckoned with on any topic. He had a great sense of humor and it was tragic when his eyesight failed to a point where he couldn't navigate online anymore. Thank you Kevin for bringing this to my attention. -Brian

Some more Bob on Youtube

Was at someone's 60th birthday party on the weekend and played Bob's Roll Me A Long One using the birthday gal as a Bongette...

Told them all about Bob in the intro and that I was playing it mostly to keep his memory alive and to share his great sense of humour.

People loved it and I know Bob would have enjoyed their appreciation of his song...thanks Bob (Ill Keep It Going) Young

I'm so sorry to hear this news.

I was lucky enough to have met Bob at the first Pineyfest. He kindly lent me his Takamine guitar for my PineyFest slot where I could play my 'Beatle chords' as Bob used to call them. I was joined by the multi-talented Tink on shakers smile

He was a lovely, entertaining man with great sense of humour. R.I.P Bob and thanks for everything.

I hadn't heard from Bob in a long time. Today I was doing a Google search to see if I could find out where he was and how he was doing. I was stunned to find he had passed away.

I adored that man. We had a lot of fun exchanges on the boards and via e-mails and messages. We spoke on the phone a few times. He and Dawg called me Sis. I loved it.

I must have come on JPF after Bob had left the scene, so this post is the first I've heard of him. Listening to his music and watching his video it's obvious he had a great talent for songwriting and performing. And it sounds like he was quite a character. I would have liked to have been around on JPF when he was hanging out her. All of you were lucky to have known him.

Jean, as an aside, we all adore you and it is so wonderful to see you here if only because of your sad search results. I hope we'll see more of you than we have. I also have wondered what is going on with your son's art? He's so talented I looked forward to seeing where it took him. Please stay in touch!

Thank you, Brian! Toby is still creating and works on consignment. Still a starving artist and looking for work in the industry. Here is his Facebook page. Tobias White Illustration

So sorry to hear this. I knew he had been in dubious health for a long time. He was one of the stalwarts here when I first found JPF, and ALWAYS enjoyed our exchanges even when we butted heads on occasion. He will be greatly missed. Perhaps we should do a google search on some of the other "old guard" who have been M.I.A as of late.

Thanks for letting us know, John. This is such sad news.

I have wonderful memories of Bob Young. I first met him in 2004 at Pineyfest- with Bobbie Gallup in Tennessee. We had so much fun going to restaurants, playing music, laughing, singing--and Bob was always the first person to welcome people, make everyone laugh, and get everyone to play music together.

Not only was he a very gifted musician, he was also one of the kindest and funniest people I have ever met.

The devil is in the details-)

John originally posted this last August, when Bob passed.

Jean came in late(We've missed you Jean---AND TOBIAS--Thanks for the link so we can now find him again!!!)

Anyhoo, what struck me today, is wouldn't Mr. Young get a chuckle out being memorialized twice, as in:

"Wait a minute. I died again? Wasn't once enough?"

I know I'm phrasing that wrong....But I hope you get my drift.
