this is the 1st colab I've ever had with Vic Arnold & I sure do like what he's done, if you get a chance please listen...
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/0/calvinstewarthttps://soundcloud.com/vic-arnold/whos-gonna-play-left-fieldWho's Gonna Play Left Field © C. Stewart and Vic Arnold (July 4, 2015 )
Swing your bat, grab your glove Hug the people that you love Enjoy the seventh inning stretch And Willie Mays' greatest catch Today
Cause now the plot has thickened And another clock stopped tickin' We're laughing and we're crying We're living and we're dying Today
CHORUS...... The sun has gone down on his game Our brother's glove gone up in flames The choir dressed in jerseys sang...... Who's gonna play left field Who's gonna play left field
Inst.
Sometimes life can be insane We called the game because of rain No more throwing round the horn Game is over, time to mourn Today
Repeat Chorus.....
Repeat Chorus.....

Well good to see JPF up and running and even better that I got to hear this tune as the first song on the new and improved JPF. Great lyric and the perfect vibe to match. Say hey Willie .... Now that's when the game was game. What a fantastic vocal Vic. Congrats you two.

It's easy to see why you like this song. Great story line, solid melody and Vic's vocal. You bet, I'd be super happy, too! Nice work, guys. For a first collaboration, I'd say it is a complete success... and thanks to both of you for sharing it with us.

Calvin/Vic,
Really nice story and great performance IMO. Cool chord patterns and nice production/arrangement. I enjoyed this'n!
Nice to see Calvin's creativity take a different direction as well, but we still need you Calvin in right field, not as busy there, but the eccentrics need more space.....

That is really good guys. Great (serious) lyrics from Calvin and an excellent job on the music by Vic.
(When it came to baseball, I always played left out)
Vic, have you ever recorded Pancho and Lefty? This song reminds me of it a bit and I think you would do a great version.

Hi Vic and Calvin,
This works more as a "baseball is life" allegory more than a tribute to Mays or any particular baseball player that may have died. The title would limit any tribute idea to just left fielders, it would would seem, and mentioning Mays' catch made me have to double check cuz I remembered him as a center fielder, and he was.
On the other hand, it could be sung after any baseball player passes; one could change the title/hook to reflect the players position, and since that is not a rhyming line, this could be done fairly effectively.
Why am I talking about this? I guess it's cuz it does feel like a eulogy, of sorts, for a particular un-named player, and listened to in that light makes for quite an emotional impact. I imagined all my favorite (left fielder) Carl Yastrzemski moments, for instance while I listened once, and it was most moving.
The music is fittingly sentimental but not cloying, and Calvin's writing is great as usual. It's a nice song that had me thinking about life and how I use to love going to the games when I was younger..and thinking about life and the passing of time in general..
Mike

Hello Mike, Always nice see you, thanks for popping in for a listen and to give us your thoughts. Well, here's the story.... Our brother unexpectedy died, he died on the 4th of July. He was a big baseball fan & played most of his life. The pastor that did his eulogy was on his team, during the eulogy, the pastor wore the same jersey that they both wore when they played on the same team. And every so often during his speech he would say "Who's Gonna Play Left Field" so that's what this song is all about. I originaly just wanted it to heard without the story to see how the song did on it's own, and I think it did ok. It was a sad day, & then this evolved Thank you Calvin http://www.soundclick.com/bands/0/calvinstewart

Sweet intro and over all vocal performance and acoustic work is warm and beautiful.
Nice fiddle work.
The write is simply outstanding, made only more touching by its back story.

Colin. When I tried for the school choir I was left out too.
I did learn Poncho and Lefty when a friend brought it to my attention, and sang it with a local band about 20 years ago ......ONCE .... without rehearsal. I don't think the band quite understood the genre. I do love the song though.
Thanks for liking it.

Calvin and Vic, just listened to this song. Vic's easy rolling country feel really brings Calvin's melancholy lyrics to life. The music and words work seamlessly together. A real nice job.

We try to listen to posted tunes before we read any comments and right from the get-go it was obvious that this was a fine tune. I was a huge baseball fan as a kid and it was easy to get lost in the production. The metaphors are so good. But after reading the backstory it became even more powerful.
WTG guys, we very much enjoyed the listen. And it'll make a good addition to the SC playlist.

Thank you J&B. The lyric was very well penned by Calvin.
Normally I would get involved with the lyrics on a collab., but all I did on this one is a slight rearrangement to fit the melody in my head.
