My first time writing with Floyd. What a pleasure to work with! Appreciate any feedback. TIA! -TK

Gypsy Days
© Tim Keesee/Floyd Jane
Vocals: Floyd Jane

V1
I track every road I travel one mile marker at a time
Every lonesome highway, Fayetteville to Anaheim
Beat up Gibson ridin’ shotgun in a beat up Chevrolet
Sharing a front seat view of my gypsy days

V2
Pour my soul out in a song, a little truth in every line
Shootin’ straight from the heart, every word genuine
Some might not understand, you’re born to it or ya’ ain’t
So I don’t try to explain these gypsy days

V3
This is who I am, a travellin’ troubadour
Livin’ one song at a time, my curse and my reward
Nights in half-filled dives, as long as there’s a stage
And a beer sign to light the way through my gypsy days

BR
I’ll stop movin’, I’ll stop singin’
When my restin’ place is dug
Music is my mistress
The journey, my drug

V4
I warned her not to fall for a ramblin’ music man
Promised I’d come ‘round often as I can
She sits waitin’ for that call, what would I say
I live for those neon nights and these gypsy days

OUTRO
I live for those neon nights and these gypsy days

Hi Tim and Floyd:

This is a real treat of a song and I enjoyed every line. Your writing has real promise, Tim... and what is there to say about Floyd except Mr. Perfection. His honest vocal makes the story line drive its way into the hearts and minds of your listeners.

Great work, you two. Best of luck with it. ----Dave

Beautifully done guys.
Nice guitar work and warm vocals.
Is that a banjo I hear?
I too like the story line and how vividly it's written.

Is there a creative reason you alternated between my and these .

I like MY. smile

My 2 cents, on V3

The song strikes me as a person humbly describing thier existence and the label "traveling troubadour" while true doesn't seem like something he would call himself... seems too cool.

I was thinking something like...

"This is who I am, nothing less and nothing more.
Livin’ one song at a time, it's my curse and my reward
Nights in half-filled dives, empty corner as the stage
And a beer sign to light the way through my gypsy days"

And if "traveling troubadour" comes to the listeners minds, then cool.

As your first collaboration you guys really nailed it.

The title grabs your attention and the song really delivers.

All The Best

Good vocal and production as we come to expect from Floyd.

Not sure if gypsy has a slightly different meaning in the US.
In the UK they are known as a travelling people but they travel as families. Not so much individually.

Maybe though the word gypsy here is used only as a metaphor to suggest he moves around a lot.

Nicely done.

Vic

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

Hey Vic, We have Gypsies here in the US as well.
They even have crazy reality shows... "Gypsy Sisters" and "Gypsy Weddings".

In the song it seems to be more of a metaphor but Tim can shed light on his intentions.

Tim and Floyd,

Beautiful work, reminding me of all the Texas writers I love. This is someone's future signature song.

Every word in this is meaningful to me. The bridge sublime.

I am liking the musical arrangement for the most part, Floyd, but I'm not wild about your phrasing of "traveling troubadour" in V3--kind of jerky sounding to me. I'd have opted for more even eighth notes (I know..I'm being nit-picky..) but you otherwise have an excellent lead vocal here. Sometimes your close harmonies sound a little flat to me, but improve considerably in your higher range. You do a nice job keeping the musical arrangement changing, adding a banjo late is a nice addition, and wonderful pedal steel moments.

Mike

Nelson,

Thanks for the listen and the comments. The use of "my" or "these" was a choice of what felt right at the time. I like your suggestion of "nothing less and nothing more" although I would leave out the "and"... I generally take those little words out when they are not necessary. The "It's" on curse/reward is implied - and, again, I leave those out when they are not necessary - in this case, I much prefer it without. Your "empty corner" suggestion is a good one, too - although it does change the meaning slightly...

Thanks again for such a detailed listen...

Hey Mojo...always appreciate you stopping by. Thanks for the spin! -TK

Hi Dave...thanks for the listen and comment. Couldn't agree with you more, Floyd's vocal style has a real genuineness (is that a word??) to it. In other words, very honest like you said!:) Appreciate your kind words sir. -TK

Mr. Nelson...appreciate your comments and good ideas. However changing that line to "nothing less, nothing more" would deprive me of being able to use "troubadour" in a song, something I have always wanted to do lol. grin Thanks for the listen and kind words. It was a real treat for me to work with Mr. Jane. -TK

Hey there, Vic...appreciate you having a listen here and leaving a comment. Yes, you are correct, that is the exact metaphor and intent of the word, gypsy, here. -TK

Howdy Lane...glad you liked what you heard sir. Floyd is the talented one, I just came along for the ride. Thanks for taking the time to listen. Much appreciated. -TK

Michael...appreciate you listening and chiming in. I'll let Floyd speak to your points, should he choose to. All I know is, his vocals, sell the song in my view, and when I had the idea for the song, a voice like Floyd's is exactly what I had in mind, and I agree the steel was a nice touch. Thanks again for taking the time sir. -TK

Thank you, Ricki. Appreciate you giving us a few minutes of your time. -TK

Hi TK and Floyd,

I loved the lonesome journey ... it sounds GREAT!
It left me feeling sad and forlorn for the girl ... all she wants is a little gypsy family and all ... is that really too much for the two of you to give her?! mad

I think this line is worded very poignantly ...."she sits waitin' for that call...what would I say." There's something about "what WOULD I say" that grabs you ...makes the listener realize he hasn't kept his promise, but we're still not 100% sure he's not seeing her.

Lovely song!

Great collab guys! We will be the first in line
to say that you can't go wrong with bringing
floyd in on a song -- whether it be for the
lead, harmony, lyric or production. He's done
the magic transformation on several of our
tunes.

There's been many a take on the ramblin' man
on the road songs but this one shines. Neat and
new angles on the theme, catchy melody and
a sparkling production. Y'all got it going here!

Vic - thanks for dropping by...

Lane - appreciate that...

Mike - thanks. It's a difficult song to record the vocal for because the entire verse has to be done without any pauses. Any mistakes and the whole verse has to be done again. The tempo should have been a tad slower probably...

Ricki - thanks.

Dave - thanks.

Calvin - appreciate it.

Lisa - you always know how to hone in on the finer points - appreciate that!

Amazing Tim and Floyd. Loved the lyric and the easy going vibe of the music. It just flows from start to finish perfectly. Every song I have listened to today sounds like a hit. This is no exception. Perfection.

Good song, excellent performance, and very nice production.

I loved the pedal steel riff between the bridge and V4, very spiffy. I'm not as crazy about it in other parts of the song but there are some great moments to be sure. Given how inspiring it is in parts, I believe it could be even better throughout. The intonation on the harmonies is not perfect in places but they are still very well done. You set the bar high so the critique follows the bar! :-p

Peace,
TC

This song rolls along nicely, like a road song should. I can almost see the telephone poles flashing by as I roll down the road. The fiddle on the break brings to mind the gypsy lifestyle. Floyd you did a nice job on the vocals and the musical arrangement.
