I have several CDs on CD Baby....solo and with a couple of bands. I get a handful of sales and streams which occasionally add up to a small payment.

What is curious is that I recently have had several sales and streams of the same song (The Florida Keys) pop up from Norway, Switzerland and other places via iTunes. I haven't done anything to promote that song for years. I wonder what caused that and how to get more of it? !!!

Hi Colin:

Back in the Derek Sivers days at CDBaby, they would send your CDs to a menu of providers (selected by you) and iTunes was an available option. I'm not sure how it works there today but suspect the same model still applies. I never used the CD distribution model but instead, selected the electronic method to keep from having to print and mail CDs. I had a few sales but still never overcame the expense and finally just gave up, withdrew my album, licked my wounds and did my best to learn from the experience.

Looking back, my early vocals left a great deal to be desired... looking forward, I've decided that I need to have demos done from this point forward. Getting old is no fun but accepting the facts will certainly reduce the pain of rejection... LOL!

Best of luck,

Thanks for responding. Yes, CD Baby does put it on iTunes, etc. What I am wondering, however, is what made people find that particular song and buy it, but not others. It is certainly not the best of the songs I have out there, so I think it is being promoted in Europe somehow. Other sales have been in the UK and Denmark, yet the song is about places in the US like the Florida Keys. Seems like an odd choice!

Nashville, Tn.

Almost every writer I know have experienced this. Songs showing up in all kinds of places like Vietnam, Iceland, all kinds of weird areas. I tend to think it is just part of the oddity of the Internet. People probably just come across a site by random and end up streaming or downloading songs. Could be in some form of package where a service is bundling a lot of songs together, could be in random people in a service like Pandora, that you find one you like, and others are presented in that same vein.

I don't really know what is happening. But I do know with all these bits of information zooming around the Universe that anything is pretty much possible.

Well, CD Baby is a global website. You can access it from anywhere, and people use it. I don't think there's more to it, really.

I Denmark where I live, we export lots of music to the far east. There are bands that makes a nice living, making it big in Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia ect. They have no name here, but sells 1.000.000+ over there. The same could be true from any other spot on the globe.

If you act smart in the global market, you can monitor your sales ww, and start building a fanbase in the countries that buys your music even without marketing. It might be an opportunity indicator. If the market won't come to you, you can come to the market.

So, prepare to tour, Colin! :-)

I'd bet Marc could sell millions in Hong Kong grin
