To Apple, Love Taylor
I write this to explain why I’ll be holding back my album, 1989, from the new streaming service, Apple Music. I feel this deserves an explanation because Apple has been and will continue to be one of my best partners in selling music and creating ways for me to connect with my fans. I respect the company and the truly ingenious minds that have created a legacy based on innovation and pushing the right boundaries. I’m sure you are aware that Apple Music will be offering a free 3 month trial to anyone who signs up for the service. I’m not sure you know that Apple Music will not be paying writers, producers, or artists for those three months. I find it to be shocking, disappointing, and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company.
This is not about me. Thankfully I am on my fifth album and can support myself, my band, crew, and entire management team by playing live shows. This is about the new artist or band that has just released their first single and will not be paid for its success. This is about the young songwriter who just got his or her first cut and thought that the royalties from that would get them out of debt. This is about the producer who works tirelessly to innovate and create, just like the innovators and creators at Apple are pioneering in their field…but will not get paid for a quarter of a year’s worth of plays on his or her songs. These are not the complaints of a spoiled, petulant child. These are the echoed sentiments of every artist, writer and producer in my social circles who are afraid to speak up publicly because we admire and respect Apple so much. We simply do not respect this particular call. I realize that Apple is working towards a goal of paid streaming. I think that is beautiful progress. We know how astronomically successful Apple has been and we know that this incredible company has the money to pay artists, writers and producers for the 3 month trial period… even if it is free for the fans trying it out. Three months is a long time to go unpaid, and it is unfair to ask anyone to work for nothing. I say this with love, reverence, and admiration for everything else Apple has done. I hope that soon I can join them in the progression towards a streaming model that seems fair to those who create this music. I think this could be the platform that gets it right. But I say to Apple with all due respect, it’s not too late to change this policy and change the minds of those in the music industry who will be deeply and gravely affected by this. We don’t ask you for free iPhones. Please don’t ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation. Taylor

If she were serious she'd hold back all of her albums instead of just the latest one. I like Taylor but she did kiss their ass a little bit too much here. Unfortunately, I doubt they care about her protest. This is a company that runs sweatshops in eastern Asia. Do they really care that Taylor is gonna hold back 1989? What she needs to do is make alliances and form a coalition against Apples free 3 month trial. It should realistically be a free one month trial like all of the others.

I agree but at least she is speaking up....I don't see anybody else standing up. APPLE is a Terrible Company as it makes ALL its stuff in sweat shops with very little salaries to pay. They should be ashamed of themselves. HOW MUCH profit do you think THEY make of one I Pod or Phone etc.....It must be astronomical. Of course they sell their products all over the world so The USA can't make them move here but it is JUST the greedy way of the world today. APPLE has so much cash that they just keep buying back their own stock....Something is wrong with this picture. I would make a law that IF you want to sell to Americans here in America a certain amount of the product needs to be manufactured here. This is probably their biggest market. BUT at least Taylor is saying something. The Silence is deafening. Greed all over and under every rock......

If iPhones are almost 1000$ new (made with cheap labour) imagine what they'd price it if it were made in the US. I won't buy an iPhone. Too much money. I bought a Samsung Galaxy for half of that price.

Hi Guys:
Thanks for sharing this with us Tom.
My reaction: Apple Schmaple! These guys have a lock on music and it galls me to the core. They act more like Microsoft than Google... and all three suck!
The opinion expressed above is based on anger and disappointment... and does not necessarily represent those of JPF Management... LOL!
Back to the U. S. Open... (on TV, naturally)

Well, I understand everything about this except the Greek Portion. It's all Greek to me. When I want some music I buy the CD. My number one Grandson wanted to send a couple of files to his Whatever Phone.
So we scanned them into my computer and then sent them! It worked! Sitting right here he found them on his whatever phone. Now that's progress! From 3 feet to around the circuts back to his whatever phone!

It's 800-900 if it's an unlocked phone meaning you're not locked into a contract. You can choose whichever carrier and plan you want to be with. It's also more if the phone is 32 gb and up. Iit's a couple hundred dollars each time it goes up. So like 16, 32,64, 128 gb. What most of the population does is get their phones with plans. Like 2 years locked into a contract with say verizon, the phone will be free but you'll be paying for the top plan of 90$ per month. I did the math and realized it's cheaper in the long run to buy the phone unlocked.

Apple blinked. They will pay musicians during the 3 month trial. Now we'll see if Taylor lets them stream her new songs

Good for Taylor, she just jumped a few points in the eyes of all musicians, writers, etc. She could have kept quite and made a deal behind the scenes so she would be paid, but she stepped up for the little guys, good for her. Too bad more of the big guys don't go to bat for the little guys, most look out for number one, themselves.
